In this project a self navigating robot was created that used ultrasonic sensors to detect obstacles in its path and avoided them. When an obstacle is encountered the robot documents said obstacle by taking photographs of it as well as registered its coordinates and created a map, as a bonus feature. This thesis deals with practical implementation of photon mapping algorithm. To achieve better results some basic and some more advanced methods of global illumination has been examined. These time demanding algorithms are often practically unusable and their further optimization is necessary. Optimized ray tracer is essential for practical implementation. Computing diffuse interreflection by Monte Carlo sampling is also very time demanding operation. Therefore it is appropriate to use it along with proper interpolation.

Single-photon sources and detectors underpin the development of quantum photonic technologies. This thesis presents research into single-photon devices with a focus on telecom wavelengths. A two-channel superconducting nanowire single-photon detector (SNSPD) system was constructed and characterised. It provides free-running single-photon detection at telecom wavelengths with low dark counts and timing jitter below 90 ps FWHM. The system detection e ciency at 1310 nm is 1 % with a 1 kHz dark count rate, which was competitive when the SNSPD was built in 2009. In this work, the low timing jitter

Two separate experimental techniques have been used to investigate the fundamental properties of small polyatomic molecules in the gas phase. Selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry has been used to study the reactions of cations and anions with ethene, monofluoroethene, 1,1-difluoroethene, trifluoroethene and tetrafluoroethene. Calculated collisional reaction rate coefficients are compared to those measured by the experiment. The product ions from these reactions have been detected and their branching ratios measured. Many of these results have been explained using arrow-pushing mechanisms.
