Abstract:
Aquifer maps are key tools for water resources management, and allow to characterize a water table distribution and variability. The Grombalia plain in the northeast part of Tunisia was studied to identify the origin of groundwater recharge and to specify the type of recharge in the whole study area. It aims to investigate the impact of recharge schemes on the piezometric evolution of the water table. Furthermore, the purpose is to investigate the origin and dominant factor of the recharge. The methodology of this work includes two methods of analysis of the dynamics of the piezometric heads o

Bernoulli’s equation is found to be one of the most popular topics of the elementary physics. The paper presents the experimental behavior of the famous Bernoulli’s equation when the piezometric heads are altered and varied with respect to the heads 10cm and 15cm. The value of h in centimeters have been recorded in altered time periods and heads and in all the nine tubes. The calculation of the total energy (E) by changing the heads is obtained and the results achieved while equating the graphs between the total energy and distance from the reference point by changing the heads has been comput

Abstract. The Tertiary detritic aquifer of Madrid (TDAM), with an average thickness of 1500 m and a heterogeneous, anisotropic structure, supplies water to Madrid, the most populated city of Spain (3.2 million inhabitants in the metropolitan area). Besides its complex structure, a previous work focused in the north-northwest of Madrid city showed that the aquifer behaves quasi elastically trough extraction/recovery cycles and ground uplifting during recovery periods compensates most of the ground subsidence measured during previous extraction periods (Ezquerro et al., 2014). A groundwater model characterized by a lack of field data to estimate hydraulic model parameters and boundary conditions combined with many piezometric head observations was investigated concerning model uncertainty. Different conceptual models with a stepwise increase from 0 to 30 adjustable parameters were calibrated using PEST. Residuals, sensitivities, the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC), and the likelihood of each model were computed. As expected, residuals and standard errors decreased with an increasing amount of adjustable model parameters. However, the model with only 15

The subject of flow through rockfill is of increasing interest in Canada. Rockfill drains are presently used by mining companies in order to permit existing creeks to flow through the base of mine waste dumps. There is potential for the use of flow through rockfill dams for mini-hydro schemes because the adoption of a costly concrete spillway may be unnecessary in some cases. An important issue in the design of flow through rockfill structures is the pore pressure distribution and the associated hydraulic gradients, neither of which are associated with Darcy's law. Abstract. The Somme River Basin is located above a chalk aquifer and the discharge of the somme River is highly influenced by groundwater inflow (90% of river discharge is baseflow). In 2001, the Somme River Basin suffered from a major flood causing damages estimated to 100 million Euro (Deneux and Martin, 2001). The testing program included "end of the casing" and "Lefranc" tests, as described in Canadian standards 2501-135 and 2501-130, for field permeability tests in a casing driven in a granular soil (valid for 10−5 < K < 10−2 cm/s approximately). The theoretical solutions for these tests require a list of assumptions that may be difficult to satisfy under field conditions. It was concluded that failure was caused by a chain of events in which weight loss and shrinkage of the peat, due to the dry weather conditions, are considered important factors. This project developed a three-dimensional (3D) seepage model to evaluate efficiency of 84 relief wells and factors of safety (FoS) along the Profit Island vicinity levee (PIVL), north of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The PIVL model was built based on US Geological Survey MODFLOW-USG. Moreover, a 3D seepage model of RocScience RS3 was also built for a specific study of relief well experiments conducted by the US Army Corps of Engineers in the 1930s and 1940s. The PIVL model was calibrated with measured piezometric head data and relief well flow rates in 1997. Six flood scenarios were conducted: the

An updated stability analysis was performed on the Old River Low Sill Structure due to a change in the operating conditions from historic river sedimentation. Sedimentation of the Mississippi River channel since the 1973 spring flood has caused higher river stages at lower discharges. The structure’s foundation was compromised during the 1973 flood, and emergency repairs were conducted to prevent scouring and undermining of the foundation by the flood scour. Rehabilitati
