Robe, Stephen C. "Comparison of a large and small grapple skidder in a pine plantation thinning application." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/45171.

Full text
Abstract:
The objective of this research was to compare the performance of a small (92 horsepower) grapple skidder with that of a large (185 horsepower) grapple skidder in corridor thinning applications in southern pine plantations. Comparisons included (1) time and production, (2) residual stand damage, (3) soil compaction, (4) cost, and (5) the impact of tree size on productivity. The large grapple skidder was found to be (1) more productive, (2) associated with slightly more residual stand damage, (3) associated with less soil compaction, (4) less expensive on a cost per ton of production basis, and

Abstract:
I studied breeding birds and vegetation in 6 largely pristine old-growth ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) stands and in 3 logged stands that just met the USDA Forest Service's minimum habitat quality standards for old-growth ponderosa pine. Bird populations were similar in all stands. However, brown creepers (Certhia americana) and hermit thrushes (Cattarus guttatus) were low in abundance or absent in 2 of the minimum stands, yet were common in all other stands. Both species preferred cool, moist microenvironments for nesting and/or foraging; conditions that appeared lacking in the more xeric

Abstract:
This thesis presents data on nutrient losses in overland flow and eroded sediment after fire in Eucalyptus globulus and Pinus pinaster forests on schist bedrock in the Águeda Basin, northern Portugal. The principal aims were: i) to determine the effects of fire on nutrients in overland flow and eroded sediment during the immediate post-fire period, ii) to evaluate the effects of various post-fire logging techniques on nutrient losses, and iii) to examine the causes of temporal and spatial variability in overland flow and eroded sediment nutrient losses. Abstract:
This study quantifies the changes in vegetation composition and structure of a fire-excluded Pinus palustris (longleaf pine) wetland savanna restoration site in southeastern in comparison to a proximate contemporary reference site. The restoration site was invaded by hardwood species and off-site pines, and never underwent extensive soil disturbance. The restoration treatments involved logging across portions of the site and the reintroduction of fire across the entire site. All species present in 10m2 quadrats were recorded prior to treatment and throughout the 17 year study at reference and

Abstract:
The objective of this research was to determine how genetics and nutrient availability influence C cycling in intensively managed southern pine forests. This work consisted of a two year field and a complimentary one year greenhouse study each split into above- and below-ground pools and fluxes. Both the greenhouse and field experiment showed differences between contrasting genotypes in gas exchange parameters and C partitioning patterns, but genetic by nutrient availability interactions were only observed in the field. In the field study, some genotypes were better able to tolerate nutrient l

Abstract:
Disturbance events affect forest composition and structure across a range of spatial and temporal scales, and forest development may differ after natural, anthropogenic, or compound disturbances. Following large, natural disturbances, salvage logging is a common yet controversial management practice around the globe. While the short-term impacts of salvage logging have been studied in many systems, the long-term effects remain unclear. Further, while natural disturbances create many persistent and unique microsite conditions, little is known about the long-term influence of microsites on fores

These plantations are within a sub-tropical climatic zone, and in most years, the summers are appreciably wetter than the winters. This terrain, in general, has been highly weathered and the soils are poor in nutrients. Environmental factors such as the climate, topography and weathering profile (including soil) are found to be important controls on vadose zone hydrology, which, in turn, has a great impact on tree growth and consequent

Global biodiversity is in decline as a result of unprecedented human alterations to the earth’s land cover. Understanding the ecological mechanisms of these large-scale changes in biodiversity is imperative in furthering our knowledge on the effects these alterations may have on animal behaviour and consequently on populations, allowing researchers and managers to effectively conserve species. During the last decade, there have been reports of moose populations both increasing and decreasing in North America due to a variety of factors (e.g., climate change, habitat disturbance, disease, etc.
