The thesis begins by exploring a central problem: while the genre of elegiac exhortation poetry both invites and itself exploits analogies between, on the one hand, the immediate audience and performance setting of the poem and, on the other, the broader civic identities of that audience and larger civic context to which they belong. I argue that, in this period, the functions of myth in society were being redefined by literature in the light of a new, 'secularised' conception of the sacred. This investigation addresses formal and conceptual problems in poetry, identified through critical investigations of my own and my poetic peers’ work, and through theoretical and philosophical texts (Butler, 2000; Hegel, 1807; Owens, 1980; Rose, 1996; Kappeler, 1986). Johnson defined metaphysical poetry as a violent yoking together of heterogeneous ideas. Such a process, I suggest, is developed in Yeats's work.
