The contemporary terrestrial atmosphere loses matter at a rate of around 100,000 tons per year. A major fraction of the net mass loss is constituted by ions, mainly H+ and O+, which escape from the Earth’s ionosphere in the polar regions. Zinc oxide surfaces have been of considerable interest because of their favorable properties, such as high electron mobility, good transparency, large electronic breakdown field and wide bandgap. Knowing the surface structure of ZnO is the key to better understand the above phenomena and to further develop its applications. In this thesis, the Patterson Function was evaluated by inversion of LEED I-V spectra at multiple incident angles to determine the surface structure of the ZnO(0001) polar surface. The sample was prepared by degassing and then 15 cycles of argon sputtering and annealing.

This study examines polar low formation frequency, origin region and storm tracks in the entire Nordic Sea region for a complete polar low season and identifies the prevailing synoptic situation common to polar low formation. The number of polar lows detected through TIROS-N satellite imagery between September 1988 and May 1989 was significantly greater than one would expect from previous studies.
