Poly-L-co-D.L-lactic (PLDLA) is a bioresorbable polymer whose properties have been studied for degradation sensitivity and its application in medicine. In this study, the potential of PLDLA membranes for temporary implantation was evaluated. PLDLA membranes were prepared with the solvent evaporation technique and characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, gel permeation chromatography, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy and traction tests. The glass transition temperature of the membranes was 59 °C. Degradation started around 340 °C during the second week

The development of nanomedicine has provided advanced treatment opportunities for many diseases. Simvastatin, a widely used anti-lipidaemic drug, has potential for the treatment of orthopaedic diseases. However, the clinical application of simvastatin is limited because of its hydrophobicity and lack of distribution in osseous tissue. In this study, an amphiphilic nanoparticle, poly(d,l-lactide- co-glycolide)–poly(ethyleneglycol)–poly(d,l-lactide- co-glycolide), was synthesised to improve the biocompatibility of simvastatin. Guided tissue regeneration and guided bone regeneration membranes are some of the most common products used for bone regeneration in periodontal dentistry. The main disadvantage of commercially available membranes is their lack of bone cell stimulation and easy bacterial colonization. The aim of this work was to design and fabricate a new membrane construct composed of electrospun poly (D,L-lactic acid)/poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) fibers sonocoated with layers of nanoparticles with specific properties, i.e., hydroxyapatite and bimetallic nanocomposite of zinc oxide–silver. “Blood vessel mimics” (BVMs) are tissue-engineered constructs that serve as in vitro preclinical testing models for intravascular devices. The Cal Poly Tissue Engineering lab specifically uses BVMs to test the cellular response to stent implantation. PLGA scaffolds are electrospun in-house using the current “Standard Protocol” and used as the framework for these constructs. The performance of BVMs greatly depends on material and mechanical properties of the scaffolds.
