Abstract:
This paper offers a sympathetic, but critical, perspective on selected statistical methods relevant to both educational and psychological research. I argue that the classical statistical procedures used in these fields should, where appropriate, be deployed in the service of a more liberal realist conception of research. In this regard, it is claimed that the principal function of statistical methods is to help us detect robust empirical phenomena. With this in mind, I suggest that exploratory factor analysis is a quasi-statistical method that serves an important role in the generation of new

The purpose of this exploratory research was to investigate potential factors (i.e. gender, time lapse between the latest statistics class and completion of the statistics test, grade point average (GPA), attitude towards statistics), which are associated with the comprehension and retention of statistical knowledge in Baccalaureate Psychology students. The criterion variable was statistical competency, which was measured in five subdomains: basic concepts, descriptives, correlation/regression, hypothesis testing, and inferential statistics.

AbstractThis chapter describes the role of machine learning in youth suicide prevention. Following a brief history of suicide prediction, research is reviewed demonstrating that machine learning can enhance suicide prediction beyond traditional clinical and statistical approaches. Strategies for internal and external model evaluation, methods for integrating model results into clinical decision-making processes, and ethical issues raised by building and implementing suicide prediction models are discussed. Finally, future directions for this work are highlighted, including the need for collaborative science and the importance of both data- and theory-driven computational methods.

Metric and statistical methods have been discussed in literature in order to deal with this type of bias; however, some of these methods show side-effects on the level of scale validity and some others with so stringent effects on the available information and allow for very limited variance to be interpreted.
