Abstract:
Buddhist history shows that Saṃmitīya school has been an influential Buddhist sect in the past. On the one hand, it stood unique, holding an unconventional view like pudgalavāda, which seemingly appears against anātmavāda; on the other, it remained dominant in many places as a significant branch of early Buddhism. It regarded pudgala as bhāra-hāra, the burden bearer of pañca-skandha, the building blocks of life. Nevertheless, many Buddhists viewed pudgala as an Atman and rejected it, for to be a Buddhist is not to accept the existence of Ātma translated as soul. Saṃmitīya’s influence can also

Indian philosophers have been too much preoccupied with their theories of inference. As a result, theories of perception and linguistic meaning have suffered from comparative neglect. Besides, though much is known about the theories of perception of the Buddhists, the Naiyāyikas, the Sāmkhyas, very little is known about their criticism by the Jainas, Furthermore, the works that have appeared so far on the subject are mainly concerned with psychology and not epistemology. In this respect the present work that fills up the lacunae is the most welcome addition to the literature on Indian philosop

LANGUAGE NOTE | Document text in Chinese; abstract in English only. This essay highlights the tension between the Madhyāmika and mainstream Buddhist views on life and death. As an extreme position that aimed to refute the ideas of Abhidharma and Yogācāra, the Madhyāmika view cannot properly reflect the mainstream Buddhist view on the issue. To explain the possibility of reincarnation, Buddhists developed the concept of a mental continuum, which is in contrast to the Hindu idea of a soul (ātman) and the Jaina idea of subtle matter (pudgala). First of all, it sets out the background of the debate on what Pudgala means. This debate occurred about 200-300 years after the Nirvana of Buddha during the Sectarian period of the Theravadin School, which was during the Indian Ashoka era. Since the Indian philosophy and the views of the Vātsīputrīyāḥ Sect of the Theravadin School advocate "the theory of the presence of an actual self personality". Abstract No Buddhist school has been more vilified by its Buddhist peers or misunderstood by modern scholars than the so-called pudgalavādaschool. Other Buddhists accused them of violating the fundamental Buddhist tenet of no-self (anātman) by holding the view that a real ontological self exists that, their accusers argued, pudgalavādins try to camouflage by calling it pudgala (person) rather than ātman (self ). Modern scholars, forming opinions largely based on or influenced by the hostile polemical literature of the pudgalavādins’ opponents, reiterate that accusation. In addition, until recen
