Abstract:
Venous thromboembolism is still a leading cause of mortality and morbidity for hospitalised patients. While the awareness of the risk for thromboembolic complications for surgical patients is high, and effective prophylactic treatment is normally and systematically prescribed, the situation is very different regarding patients admitted in a internal medical ward. Only recently the usefulness of prophylactic treatment was recognised also for medical patients. A thromboembolic event can be a life threatening complication especially for people affected by chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (CO

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is characterised by progressive symptoms of productive cough, breathlessness, wheeze and exacerbations. Airway obstruction is detected by quality assured spirometry, and is defined as a Forced Expired Volume in one second / Forced Vital Capacity ratio <0.7. Inhaled therapy is the most effective treatment solution, with bronchodilators and inhaled steroids helping to improve symptoms, quality of life and lung function, while reducing risk of exacerbations. Bronchodilators are available as both monotherapy and as dual combination therapy. Inhaled steroids

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a leading respiratory disease in the world and third leading cause of death in United States. COPD is not recognized as an isolated respiratory disease anymore; in fact it is one of the dreaded diseases with significant systemic involvement and complications. Treatment of COPD requires team work and efforts among physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists and physical therapists. Treatment of patients with frequent exacerbations is a heavy burden on healthcare network. In the last few years, some improvements in the management of COPD have been m

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a risk factor for development of intraoperative and postoperative pulmonary complications. Regarding the type and the extent of surgical procedure, patients with COPD are at risk of aggravation of pulmonary function which leads to complicated perioperative course. Cardiovascular disease is common in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), and forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) independently predicts cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Pathological changes in the systemic vasculature have been proposed as potential mechanisms linking COPD to cardiovascular disease, and patients with COPD may be at increased risk of acute myocardial infarction during acute exacerbations. Notwithstanding causation, FEV1 may be a useful prognostic marker in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. This thesis examined these three aspects of cardiovascular c

Abstract:
The hypothesis examined in this thesis stated that macrophages from COPD subjects are defective in their ability to phagocytose. To investigate this hypothesis, engulfment by COPD macrophages was compared to that of cells from controls (smokers without COPD and non-smokers). Phagocytosis of polystyrene beads by monocytes-derived-macrophages (MDM) was comparable to that of alveolar macrophages, thus validating the MDM model. There was no difference in uptake of beads by any subject group, however, COPD MDM phagocytosed significantly less E. coli, H. influenzae and S. pneumoniae than cells from

In clinical settings, doctors classify pulmonary disorders into two main categories, obstructive lung disease and restrictive lung disease. The former is characterized by the airway obstruction which is associated with several disorders like chronic bronchitis, asthma, bronchiectasis, and emphysema [1]. The latter is caused by different conditions where one of the triggers is tied to the spine deformity. In general, a pulmonary function test (PFT) [2] is used to evaluate and diagnose lung function, and physicians depend on the test results to identify the disease patterns of the patients (obst
