Abstract:
This thesis is aimed to the problems of virtual local networks. In the first chapters are explained both basic and advanced methods of designing and management of virtual LAN networks. The following chapters are dedicated to the methods of effective management VLAN networks and to the protocol Spanning Tree, preventing formation of loops in redundant networks, and their exploitation in VLANs. The practical part describes the application of the implementation of the technology of virtual local networks in experimental network, containing various types of devices. Based on this theory, a laboratory assignment has been designed for the training of the students in solving such problems. The scope of the laboratory assignment is divided into simpler partial tasks, which even a less advanced student should be able to configure and test.

Abstract:

This thesis puts forward a new solution to provide the reliable network to the Internet Service Provider (ISP). This study mainly focuses on the ISPs network to provide reliability and the load balancing. It offers a guide line for the best reliable solution to the ISPs, individual organizations or other types of service providers which are engaged in providing reliable communications to their subscribers. These reliable services may be real time communications which include weather forecasts, tracking systems, online Internet protocol TV (IPTV) programs and many other ISPs services which are totally depend on the reliable network.

With the appearance and expansion of Internet subscribers all over the world, ISPs services are becoming more popular. The rapid increase of connection-demand and highly traffic network is the main reason behind the need to scale reliable network. To offer better solutions, a new theoretical and practical approach should be considered that can cover the reliable network.

The suggested network structure monitors the links, spreads the network traffic with multiple devices and takes a backup (redundant) link automatically when changes occur in the network topology. In order to support the redundancy, load balancing and reduce the failover time, the hot standby routing protocol (HSRP) is implemented on the suggested network. As we have analyzed that in any network, scalability bringing to raised the network traffic broadcast issue. Broadcast storms can be prevented by setting threshold values of traffic-filters. The threshold level helps to control broadcast traffic in networks.

With regard to suggested solutions, it is necessary to observe the limitations and advantages of the recommended reliable network structure. Therefore, this research will include the advantages and limitations of the techniques used to offer ISP services such as scalability, security and IPv6.

Full text
Abstract:
It is a wonder to discover the remarkable progress the Qin Dynasty made two thousand years ago concerning its documentation systems. Ever since the excavation of the Shuihudi (in Chinese 睡虎地), we now know in Qin, there was the Rule Book of Implementation 《行書》律(about the laws on documentation systems). Unfortunately, there was no correspondence for cross examination. Not until the excavation of the Liye (里耶) site in 2002 were we able to identify the format of the correspondence between the central government, provinces and towns. From the 37000 bamboo slips of Qin which are rich in contents, we can see they covered every aspect. As well, the 2008 Yuelu (嶽麓)bamboo slips appeared to fill the gaps left by Shuihudi. They provide clues, allowing the author to reconstruct the profile of Qin’s documentation systems. Scholars working on the documentation systems of Qin through the bamboo slips appear to base their findings on only isolated excavations, such as the discussion of either Shuihudi or Liye. But when they researched on the postal system which was central to the wider documentation systems, they had to rely on the clues provided by the Warring States Period, or on the bamboo slips of the Han Dynasty. There are thus limitations. For example, we cannot assume that Han must have inherited its systems from Qin. This thesis looks at the many unearthed bamboo slips having to do with Qin’s documentation systems, revisits and organizes current researches and attempts to reconstruct the state of documentation in Qin.

He, Jiani. "From Empire to Nation : the politics of language in Manchuria (1890-1911)." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2018. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/278975.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the issues of language and power in the Qing Empire’s (1644-1911) northeastern borderlands within the larger context of political reforms in late Qing China between 1890 and 1911. To the present, much research on the history of language in late Qing China continues to fall within the framework of national language. Drawing on Manchu and Chinese sources, this thesis argues that the Qing emperors devised a multilingual regime to recreate the imperial polyglot reality and to rule a purposefully diverse but unifying empire. From the seventeenth century, the Qing emperors maintained the special Manchu-Mongol relations by adopting Manchu and Mongolian as the two official languages, restricting the influence of Chinese, and promoting Tibetan in a religious context in the Jirim League. From the 1890s, the Jirim League witnessed a language contest between Manchu, Mongol, Chinese, Japanese and Russian powers which strove to legitimize and maintain their control over the Jirim Mongols. Under the influence of European and Japanese language ideologies, the Qing Empire fostered the learning of Chinese in order to recreate the Jirim Mongols as modern nationals in an integrated China under a constitutional monarchy. Meanwhile, the Qing Empire preserved Manchu and Mongolian, which demonstrated the Manchu characteristic of the constitutional monarchy in a wave of Chinese nationalism. However, the revised language regime undermined the Jirim Mongols’ power and challenged their special position in the traditional Manchu-Mongol relations, which caused disunity and disorder in the borderlands. This thesis challenges the notion of language reform as a linear progress towards Chinese national monolingualism. It demonstrates the political and ritual role of Manchu and Mongolian beyond their communicative and documentary functions, and unfolds the power of language pluralism in Chinese nationalist discourse from a non-Chinese and peripheral perspective. By investigating how ethnic, national, and imperialist powers interacted with one another, this thesis allows us to understand the integration of Manchuria into modern China, East Asia, and the world from a different perspective.

Yan, Tsz-ting, and 甄芷婷. "A study of late Qing collaborative translation." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2011. http://hub.hku.hk/bib/B47869355.

Full text
Abstract:
Collaborative translation is one of the most practiced modes of intercultural communication in Late Qing as in the general history of China. While collaborative translation, as its prevalence suggests, is expected to have a direct and significant bearing on the way a translation is produced, little attention has been paid to the understanding of its nature, not least its influence on the shaping of translation products. The present study endeavors to explore collaborative translation with three specimens of acclaimed Late Qing translation. It will show that these translations, produced collaboratively by teams of Western and Chinese translator, are instilled with a fusion of the collaborator’s horizons, thus rendered as a hybrid monstrous both to the source and the target cultures. The first part of this thesis establishes the conceptual paradigm from which a probe into the general practices of Late Qing collaborative translation derives. It argues that collaborative translation, which generally operates as a cooperation between a bilingual foreign translator and a monolingual local translator, allows considerable latitude for the local translator to participate in the transference and building of exotic knowledge, bringing about hybridity to the translation products. Resting upon the premise of hybridity, the second part of this thesis conducts close analyses of the selected translations on medicine, mathematics and chemistry, namely Quanti Xinlun, Daiweiji Shiji and Huaxue Jianyuan. By reconstructing the actual manner of operation through which these translations were produced, and by examining how certain fundamental concepts of modern Western sciences were rendered into Chinese, this part forms a critical study of the agency of the Chinese translator, who, as will be shown, selectively interprets and reshapes the body of knowledge to be transmitted in a direction presumably unintended by his Western counterpart, thereby creating a hybrid materialized as a blend of horizons between the two collaborators, and in consequence a new entity of scientific concepts different from those in the West and in China. The purpose of this study, that is to say, is to explore the agency of translators in the act of translation by positing collaborative translation as a site of observation, where cultural entanglement is both theoretically and empirically conspicuous. It is hoped that this study will on one hand foster our understanding of collaborative translation in Late Qing, and on the other, reveal further the agency of translators in intercultural communication.

Tse, Chun-yip, and 謝雋曄. "Publications for children in late Qing China." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2013. http://hub.hku.hk/bib/B50434408.

Full text
Abstract:
Traditional publications for Chinese children were based on core value and belief systems in Confucianism. After the First Opium War, foreign missionaries began to disseminate Western knowledge and religious beliefs within the Chinese society on a wider scale, reaching children through the avenue of education. At this time, however, most Chinese intellectuals held fast to their belief in traditional Chinese methods of education which emphasised the Confucian principles. The loss of the Sino-Japanese War brought a realization within China that its society and education system were relatively backward when compared with those of Western powers. Chinese intellectuals became more aware of the necessity for an entire education reform which should start from the younger generations in an attempt to revitalize China. As a result of this realization, Chinese educators began to adopt the missionaries’ practice of using publications targeted specifically at children. From the mid-19th century onwards, these publications underwent a period of vigorous development in China. Missionaries and Chinese intellectuals in the late Qing period had thus, between them, helped to prepare the ground for the modernization of China by educating the future generations to employ new ideas and values. This historical survey aims to investigate the development of Chinese publications for children from the mid-19th to the early 20th centuries, and offering a closer look at childhood education in China during this period. Some basic clarifications on the definition of children and the nature of books for children is given in the Introductory Chapter, and a brief account of the previous works and articles related to the study is also included. The main part of this thesis starts with a critical examination of the changes of the traditional Chinese primers for children education like Three Character Classic (《三字經》) under the influence of western ideas. Then it proceeds to an exploration of the emergence of modernized textbooks in Chapter Three with a critical appraisal of noted writers and publishers such as Wang Hengtong (Wang Hang-T’ong 王亨統) and the Commercial Press (商務印書館). Chapters Four to Seven present case studies of four children’s periodicals representing different parties of interest in the reform of children education, they are respectively the missionary publication The Child’s Paper (Xiaohai yuebao 《小孩月報》), The Children’s Educator (Mengxue bao《蒙學報》) published by the Chinese reformist, Enlightenment Pictorial (Qimeng huabao《啟蒙畫報》) published by enlightened Chinese intellectuals, and The Children’s World (Tongzi shijie 《童子世界》) published by the Chinese revolutionist. Chapter Eight attempts to reveal the nature of leisure readings and the development of children’s literature in late Qing China while the final Chapter provides conclusions and suggestions for further investigation. By writing this thesis, I am committed to provide readers with a comprehensive and solid historical sketch of the development of children’s publication in a critical period of pre-modern China.

Lee, Shwu-Ching. "The paintings of Mei Qing (1624-1697)." Thesis, SOAS, University of London, 1994. http://eprints.soas.ac.uk/29202/.

Full text
Abstract:
Mei Qing (1624-1697), one of the most original painters in seventeenth-century China, created a unique style of depicting the topography of the Chinese landscape, especially that of Mt. Huang. He has been recognized as one of the three greatest masters of the Mt. Huang school, along with Hongren (1610-1664) and Shitao (1642 - 1707). Also he once was praised as the leader of painting of actual landscape in the Ming and Qing dynasties. But, hitherto no extensive and critical studies on his paintings have been undertaken. The present study is divided into six chapters. In the first chapter, Mei Qing's background, poet-painter career and those of many of his painter friends are discussed, laying the historical groundwork for further study of his paintings. On the basis of poems and paintings by Mei Qing and by Shitao, the relationship between these two artists is explored in detail. In the second chapter, we learn that Mei Qing's paintings are derived from various sources; contemporary Anhui paintings, ancient masters, topographical paintings and prints, and particularly nature itself Through an analysis of Mei Qing's dated paintings, three stages of stylistic development are suggested in the third chapter, so providing a framework for dating nine undated works and for judging sixteen forgeries in the fourth chapter. After an exploration of the formation of the Mt. Huang school, a clearer and more precise definition of the school is proposed in chapter five. Through a comparison between Mei Qing's renditions of Mt. Huang and those by the other masters of the school, Mei Qing's poetic-fantastic imagination is completely revealed. In the final chapter, four important followers of Mei Qing are discussed to manifest the influence of his paintings. The significance of Mei Qing's role as a leader of painting of actual landscape in later Chinese landscape painting is further argued in the conclusion.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis focuses on Sir Robert Hart's relationship with the Qing bureaucracy in the late Qing period. Hart's relationship with Chinese officials was essential to his work as Inspector General of the Chinese Imperial Maritime Customs. The thesis argues that as Inspector General, Hart took on a role as a ‘man in the middle’ between China and the West. Hart’s service in the Chinese government (1859-1908) covered almost the entire period from China's humiliating 1860 defeat in the Second Opium War until the collapse of the imperial state in 1911 Throughout this period Harts role in the Customs Service put him at the centre of China’s foreign relations, attempting to balance European pressure and China's interests. Hart's achievements in establishing an efficient Customs Service benefiting both China and Europe represented one approach to the problem of how China should respond to increased European influence in East Asia Hart did not simply stick obstinately to British blueprints for reform in China Instead he also fused the ideas of Qing intellectuals and the Self-Strengthening movement into the British model to develop his own approach to modernisation in China Meanwhile, Chinese reformers were developing other approaches to resolving the key problem of China's growing weakness relative to the West When Hart attempted to promote reform of the Chinese Navy with himself as a new national naval Inspector-General. Chinese officials ensured that Hart did not succeed in securing a position of such far-reaching influence Primary sources used include Hart s diaries and letters, and Chinese official documents and memoranda

Abstract:
In the period from the sixteenth century to the eighteenth century, East Asia witnessed changes in the Chinese tribute system, the downfall of the Ming Dynasty, the Manchu invasion of Korea, the establishment of the Tokugawa bakufu in Japan, and the prosperity of the High Qing era. This extraordinary period disrupted the existing China-centered diplomatic system; however, at the same time, a fertile ground was created for new perceptions of the respective immediate neighbor for each individual state. In the struggle to achieve or maintain domestic and external stability, intellectuals, officials, and even commoners reflected on ways to express their individual and communal narratives that contributed to their nation’s history. This thesis explores Sino-Korean and Sino-Japanese cultural and diplomatic interactions from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century based on primary sources with a special focus on diplomatic envoys’ travel reports.

Abstract:
Abstract The dissertation studies a number of poems on drama-watching culled from collected works of Qing-dynasty writers. From the perspectives of drama criticism, intertextuality, as well as the history of the attitudes of literati, the present study aims to reexamine the following issues of Qing drama, namely: a) the development and changes of dramatic aesthetics, b) the relation between the poets and their poems on drama-watching, c) the interaction between the writers and actors/actresses, and d) the formation of relevant poetic criticism. These issues are of great significance in the scholarship of Qing drama but have not been given much attention. There are two clues in the thesis, namely one to the attitude of the literati revealed in the poems, and the other to the specific "poetic criticism on drama" from the literati's perspectives. Chapters two to five examine the literati's attitudes of the four periods of the Qing. Chapter two focuses on the transitional period of Ming and Qing (1644-1661), when the majority of drama-watching poems were written as expressions of sentiments on dynastic changes rather than dramatic criticism. This inception period saw a large number of poems. Chapter three studies the poems writing during the reigns of Emperors Kangxi and Yongzheng (1662-1722), focusing on the writers' reflection on history. The plays of this period mainly concerned history and witnessed the strict censorship for public performance. Therefore, the poems written in this period demonstrate the different choices and encountering allowed by the political backgrounds of the time. Chapter four explores the aesthetic tastes of literati of the Qianlong and Jiaqing (1723-1820) reign-periods. Prominent features of these poems include the lauding tone of the flourishing empire and the pursuit of exquisite life styles. Chapter five focuses on the late Qing (1821-1911) period. Through the analysis of the poems by women writers, it discusses the new, trans-gender trend triggered by feminine vision on drama writing and watching a. Chapters six to eight discuss drama-watching poems respectively from three perspectives, namely literati's comments on the actors, the reception of the drama texts, and the criticism of drama. Chapter six makes use of a book, Historical Records of Yandu Theatres in the Qing Dynasty (Qingdai Yandu liyuan shiliao) and explains that among Qing literati there was formed a system of "poetic appraisal of actors," which was an integration of the traditions of appraising poetry, paintings, etc. The aesthetic criteria in the system represented a unique phenomenon in the interactions between literati and actors and gave rise to this unique kind of poetic criticism on dramatic performance art. Chapter seven offers new, in-depth interpretations of theme and plot of selected dramatic texts from the perspective of meta-vision. It also argues that the poetic criticism on drama actually realized the process of canonization. Chapter eight focuses on the practice of "poetic appraisal of drama," which evolved from "poetic appraisal of poetry." The perception and comments on dramas largely enriched dramatic criticism by the topics about the poets' distinctive tastes and interests in writing, rhyming, and even diction choices. In short, the value of drama-watching poems lies in its special critical system based on the observation of drama. The genre reached its maturity in the last heydays of classical literature, and integrated multi-dimensional cultural elements such as poetry, drama, painting, and chess. What is more, it also involves other aspects such as the attitude of literati, their recreation and entertainment, aspiration and pursuits, social reality, etc., and makes a miniature of the cultural life style of Qing literati.;本文旨在將分散於清人詩文集中的觀劇詩作集中搜集和整理,以這些史料為依託,從觀劇詩的創作者(即文人群體)入手,藉助文人心態史研究、戲曲批評研究、文本互涉研究等方法,重新審視清代戲曲的審美需求如何轉變,觀劇詩與其作者之間有著怎樣密切的關係,伶人與文人如何相處,觀劇組詩如何建構為戲曲批評系統等問題,這些問題都是清代戲曲研究中不可忽視,卻又尚未深入的話題。

Abstract: This article is divided into seven sections. The first section is the foreword, explaining the motivation and goal of this study, establishing the method and scope, and introducing the results and reflections made by earlier scholars. The second and third sections sort out the contents, types and analyses of the word “Qing” in the Pre-Qin literatures, including Book of Poetry, Book of History, Zuo’s Annals, Discourses on the States, Analects, “Confucius on Poetry,” Book of Changes, Menzi, Xunzi, and “Xing Zi Ming chu”. It is pointed out that the development of the meanings of “Qing” was diverse, complicated and long. The fourth section is an inquiry of the Pre-Qin Confucians’ understandings about “nature and Qing” in order to highlight the position of “Qing” among all the analyses and discourses concentrated on mind and nature and clarify the relationships between mind, nature and feelings. The fifth section is an analysis of the Pre-Qin Confucians’ understanding about the relationship based on “desire.” The first step is to categorize and describe the contents of desire, explaining the confirmation of desire by Confucius, Menzi, Xunzi and “Xing Zi Ming chu”. Then we will talk about how they dealt with desire. The sixth section inquires how the Pre-Qin Confucians understood happiness, anger, sorrow and joy, presenting how the different schools saw the four feelings and what aspects the four feelings focus on. The seventh section concludes with how the Pre-Qin Confucians discoursed on “Qing” and how their discourses differed from one another, which is to show the result of this study and point to the issues to be further explored in the future.
