Abstract:
Transportation is an integral par t of the tourism industry. It is largely due to the improvement of transportation that tourism has expanded. The impacts on the ecology, degradation of destination sites, tourist experience, and economy has called for a better management of this resource. Transportation can be divided into two parts. One is the mobility infrastructure such as railway and highway, connecting and sometimes dividing the tourism destination. And another is site infrastructure which is in the tourism destination and guides the tourists to explore the place. Few places are as globally significant as the Tibetan Plateau, writes Daniel J Miller. Understanding this means looking at the region from a holistic, ecological standpoint. It has huge biodiversity resource and stores a lot of ice on the mountain. Religious affect this area so that it can remain in the harmony of the people and the nature. The Qinghai-Tibet railway is built for the policy or economic reason after is construction finished in 1st of July, 2006. This transportation greatly changed this area. The tourists’ trend increases 30% in Qinghai and 40% in Tibet in 2007. The income of the tourism also increased. Then the conflict occurred, on the ecological aspect: the wildlife, the One is the stepping destroy by the tourist which may cause soil erosion or vegetation destroy. And the social aspect, tourism reform the local people’s life, increases their income but also challenges the line of their religious faith. The stations along the railway became my focus point. They were like the start point, we can see the government intention, and the economic opportunity. In the meanwhile, it could also be the pollution resource and damage beginning. We can’t just simply stop people from going there. Since the railway is just like a window, advertising the beautiful landscape. If the station can’t access, people will find another way to access, in an uncontrolled way. So it is also an opportunity for expressing a new definition of tourism. Education, love, ecotourism. To make the place love for the people, so that they will have the ownership, they want this landscape keeps forever, so that it be an eternity. My thesis is trying to reach a more sustainable way to develop tourism in this very sensitive area, to create a couple of well-designed station stops which does strict (no access) protection for these areas. My intention is to create a system that combines education and the exploration in tourism.

Brümmer, Laurika. "The NZASM Tourist Precinct : Tourism Interventions as Catalyst to re-Establish the Cultural Significance of Historic Railway Housing in Pretoria CBD." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/63628.

Abstract:
The number of single-family residences in the Nederlandsche Zuid-Afrikaansche Spoorweg- Maatschappij (NZASM) heritage area, to the east of the Pretoria Train Station, has decreased over recent years. Due to the pressures of the Tshwane Compaction and Densification Strategy (2005) and the addition of high rise apartment blocks positioned between the houses, the area’s density is certain to increase further and the future of these heritage structures are in jeopardy. A fragmented urban environment has resulted, which is further emphasised by the discrepancy in scale and density of the built structures. The few remaining houses have been altered in varying degrees to suit the needs of their occupants, with no regard to their heritage value in most cases. An approach to maintain the cultural and historical value of the area would be to introduce a new function which would attract diverse visitors in a bid to regenerate the area. As a catalyst to generate interest, tourist interventions are proposed in and around selected houses, with the intention of stitching the fragmented urban fabric from the interior outwards. The vision for the site is to create the NZASM Tourist Precinct, with different amenities and accommodation options for tourists.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: There is increasingly attention to issues related to preservation and conservation of built heritage in Portugal. Now facing a state of abandonment and degradation, we are witnessing significant losses of elements in our history. This is happening with our Railway Heritage which is today mostly deactivated. Its abandonment is notorious and does not let hide the consequent stagnation of adjacent regions. The railway in Douro, partly deactivated, is a representative example. Without this railway, Douro would never been what it is today. Transportation by train was the great booster for progress in this region, which was poor but became producer of great riches. During its origins, which date back more than 150 years, the train rushed through Douro’s landscape and left strong identity marks of its population’s hard work. However, nowadays, this deactivated route has fallen into oblivion, a crucial landmark which once gave Douro its international status is now ignored by most. This investigation seeks to study the impact caused by reactivating the abandoned section between Côa and Barca d’Alva. The proposal takes into account the fragmentation of the territory along the route, and points out a specific strategy for Barca d’Alva, the last railway station in Portuguese territory. The development proposal redesigns this place, bringing new uses and experiences. It aims to respond to its inhabitants needs at the same time as it attracts new public supported by rural tourism which is increasingly present in Douro’s territory.

Abstract:
The Quebec City festivals of 1927 and 1928 represent a unique instance of close collaboration between prominent figures in Canadian musical and cultural history, John Murray Gibbon and Marius Barbeau. Based on Anglocentric concerns for a unique Canadian identity and corresponding school of composition, the festivals served as points of contact between many artists and performers, including Juliette Gauthier and Florence Glenn. An analysis of specific performances at the CPR festivals and over the course of Glenn and Gauthier’s respective careers showcase how racialized attitudes towards Indigenous populations, and the static conceptualization of French-Canadian folk culture were navigated to perform “Canadian folksong.”

Abstract:
This theoretical-practical qualitative research was developed based on several techniques, such as observation, interviews (oral history), and documental analysis. The symbolic interactionism reflects the theoretical approach adopted in valuing the research subjects´ point of view. Categories analyzed were: sustainability, landscape, heritage and community. Its development was defined in the context of cultural landscape and sustainable tourism. The main focus of this thesis was on the representations of the local community of Paranapiacaba, a railway village, in relation to the transformations that have occurred, mainly related to the heritage and the declining influence of railroad activity, and their role in the tourism activity. In a multidisciplinary approach, concepts of several sciences - Geography, Sociology, Anthropology, Social Psychology were used, as well as studies in the tourism and leisure field. As a result, it was found that the local community participates in the activity, however, their participation is, mainly, at the operational level, not at the strategic decision-making level. In theoretical terms, this study suggests approaching the concept of cultural landscape in tourism studies, related to the context of social-environmental sustainability.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the images of landscapes and locations used by the Great Western Railway Company (GWR) in their advertising and publicity material from 1897 to 1947. It argues that the GWR made sophisticated use of such images and used landscape imagery as a way, not only to appeal to a wide and varied audience of tourists and potential travellers, but also to construct a deep historical context for the company; this historical context reinforced the company's authority and echoed their paternalistic management practices at the time. The research challenges the idea that the 'motoring pastoral' of the inter-war period and beyond was a unique phenomenon by demonstrating that the GWR' landscape imagery can be viewed as a 'railway pastoral'. Such a notion pre-dates the widespread introduction of the motor-car and influenced the imagery associated with motoring that was to become so popular from the 1920s on. It argues that the motoring pastoral owes a significant debt to the railway's picturing of landscapes that came before it. The thesis puts forward the concept of the 'tourist utopia' whereby landscapes and locations were portrayed in a highly idealised manner thus highlighting the difference between the experiences on offer to the tourist and the everyday world of work. The tourist utopia of the GWR was characterised by a marked heterogeneity insofar as several differing portrayals of landscapes such as rural, historical or technological, could co-exist within the same geographical location. Such heterogeneity, it is argued, reflects the marketing practice of market segmentation and demonstrates that the marketing of mobility in Great Britain was well developed in the years prior to 1914 and continued to develop during the inter-war period.

According to the Ministry of Tourism (2013), among the various types of tourism in Brazil, many are directly linked to the culture of rail transportation, using the train as a means of locomotion between localities and also as cultural heritage. The preservation of rail transport also leads to actions for the revitalization of historical spaces and buildings because both connect in favor of the rescue of past memory, making us observe the present and helping to plan the future. Considering the hypothesis of the activation of a railway line in a given region, we must predict what possible impacts will be caused to ensure a balanced regional development, guided by the basic sustainability guidelines. This work intends to visualize the possibility of establishing a tourist train in the region of Zona da Mata Mineira, in the Juiz de Fora microregion, comprising the socioeconomic characteristics of the towns involved in the activation of a possible new railway line. It also foresees the potential socioeconomic and environmental impacts in the region, creating another hypothesis of how multimodal a railway structure could develop in the long term. Through a bibliographical review focused on the railroad sector in Brazil, the current panorama of the railways in the country as well as the current operant tourist trains are elucidated. In a second moment of the research, the socioeconomic data collection of the cities involved in the spatial analysis of the research and how the railway culture is currently present in them, help to suggest the route of the new train based, also, on urbanistic concepts applied, to be able to visualize the possible impacts that can be caused in the region.

Abstract:
This study focuses on the “Joanne” series of guidebooks that acquired popularity several decades before it was renamed “Guides Bleus” in 1919. The aim of this work is to grasp the series’ genealogy, evolution and transformation throughout the geographical regions it dealt with, mostly 19th and early 20th century Europe. This thesis falls into a multidisciplinary approach: mainly a historical research, it also makes use of Geography as well as History of Art, Archaeology, Literature and History of techniques. As the Joanne guidebooks were not created ex nihilo, this thesis first delves into the context that pushed the editor Hachette, in 1855, to buy back a tourist guidebook series that was then called “Richard”. It is thus necessary to go back to the late 18th century and the appearance of the first "Reichard" guidebooks. It then analyses the first acquisition of guidebooks that resulted in the creation of the “Bibliothèque des chemins de fer” (Railway library), distributed in the kiosks of train stations. In its second part, this study aims to reconstruct the emergence of these guidebooks famous for their “Prussian blue” covers, taking into account technical evolutions of printing and overall competition in this domain. This brings about a comparison between the French production and its British and German counterparts, Murray and Baedeker. These series pose a serious commercial threat to the French guidebooks, but also represent a source of emulation. The third part of this work introduces the reader to the various derivatives of the Joanne series. They are seen as an example of how the guidebooks were adapted to change in travel practices and to the appearance of new forms of transport, rail and automobile, before the rupture of the First World War. The thesis hence studies the shift that brought about the “Guides Bleus”. The work ends with a synthesis of the role played by these guidebooks in their historical period as well as to the birth of mass tourism in the middle of the 20th century

Abstract:
With the distinguished natural and cultural tourism resources, Tibet is undoubtedly a desirable travel destination both domestically and internationally. With the newly opened Qinghai-Tibet railway to Lhasa in July 2006, Tibet tourism development was boosted markedly due to the increased accessibility and affordability. This study evaluates the impacts of the increased accessibility achieved through the Qinghai-Tibet railway on tourist travel decisions for, and experiences in, Tibet from travelers’ perspectives. The relative importance of the train journey in comparison with the destination experience at Tibet is also examined. A destination choice framework is proposed based on a review of previous literature. It is applied in this study to understand tourists’ travel destination choice of Tibet. A questionnaire survey was designed as the major primary data collection method to collect travelers’ perceptions on the train journey and Tibet tourism. Conducted on the train to and from Lhasa of Tibet, a total of 187 questionnaires were collected, including 82 for the pre-visit sample and 105 for the post-visit sample. Important destination choice factors for Tibet are identified in this study. The findings also support the importance of the railway on tourists’ destination choice of Tibet and in the overall travel experience of Tibet. Expectations and satisfactions with the destination are also compared to indicate possibilities for further destination development in Tibet. This study improves the understanding of both the supply and demand sides of the tourism industry in Tibet. Both practical implications and academic implications are presented based on the major findings of this study. Contributions of this study and future research opportunities are discussed.

This study explores the motivations and satisfaction of visitors to Sheng-Hsing Station, Miaoli, Taiwan. For this purpose, the study used a detailed survey, conducted from the 17th to the 19th of August, 2012. 13 tourists refused to answer and 5 questionnaires were invalid owing to being incomplete; a total of 571 usable responses were collected by means of structured questionnaire. This paper adopted the ‘leisure mo-tivation scale’ to measure motives. Data analyses were per-formed using SPSS 18.0. Mainly descriptive findings were shown as follows: 57.1% were female; 51.8% were married; 28.2% aged from 21 to 30 years old; 55.2% were university-level educated; 24.2% had a career in business; 28.5% live in the greater Taichung area; and 39.4% had monthly income of NT$20,001 to 40,000. Tourists’ recreational satisfaction averaged 5.35. (S.D.=1.15, N=571, range=1-7). A market segmentation approach was used to examine the Taiwan railway travel market by utilizing the push and pull motivation factor. The results of factor analysis identify 4 push and 1 pull factor dimensions. Among them, ‘Learning’ (variance=33.88%) and ‘Relaxation’ (variance =10.61%) are seen as the most important factors. A factor analysis confirmed five dimensions of ‘Learning’, ‘Relaxation’, ‘Self-actualization’, ‘Socialization’, and ‘Experience’. The finding indicates that the major tourism motivation factors were ‘To relieve daily stresses and ‘To enjoy outstanding scenery’. According to the cluster analysis result there are 4 district segments within in the railway travel market ‘Multi-purpose tourist’, ‘Experience & relaxation tourist’, ‘Self-actualization & knowledge tourist’ and ‘Casual tourist’. The findings also contribute to the tourism literature of the travel motivation and satisfaction of the railway travel market.

At the end of the 90s, people were afraid of the advent of the end of the century; on the other hand, they looked ahead with vision for the new century, while at the same time looking back to the 20th century relentlessly. Thus, the turn of the century gave birth to retrospection and the need for contemplation of the nostalgia. The trend of retrospection is now enormous. It has become a great focus of the contemporary popular culture, and the majority of people are seeking comfort from the nostalgia. Under such circumstances, traveling provides a great relief, both physically and mentally. Therefore, what are the characteristics of these historical tourists? What are the components of the emotions that motivate looking back? What are the factors that have great impact on the emotions that hold on to the nostalgia? The objective of this research is to study the characteristics of the historical tourists, and to gain a better understanding of the emotions that cling to the nostalgia and their influences. This research adopted the method of the literature review, in which to structuralize relations between the emotions that cling to the nostalgia and their influences. There are three categories of the emotions that cling to the nostalgia; and they are: the space of the nostalgia, the time of the nostalgia and the emotion of the nostalgia. As for the influences, they are tourist motive, tourist attitude, tourist preference, age, revisit frequency, feelings of being overcrowded and so on. This research was conducted at the sampling locations around the Sheng Shing train station of the Miaoli nostalgia mountain-line on March, 2006. The number of returned valid questionnaires is 201. Based on this research, the ratio of the male and female historical tourists is quite equal, and the age group varies from the year of 1971 to 1980 as the main tourist group. Within this main tourist group, those with education have attained at least the college level, and as far as their marital status is concerned, most of them are childfree. They are classified as the middle class, with a monthly income of less than NTD $40,000. The emotions that cling to the nostalgia, within the historical tourists, consist of the three elements of space, time and emotion. They include contemplating the nostalgia time zone through the usage of symbols to represent the space in the nostalgia in order to show an ideal state of the world; however, the emotions that cling to the nostalgia also involve positive emotions, such as coziness and warmth, as well as the serenity that brings valuable leisure, and which all men are pursuing. The factors that impact the emotions from the nostalgia of a tourist are tourist motive, tourist attitude, and tourist preference. The research also indicates that age has a positive influence on the emotions from the nostalgia, but the factors of overcrowding and revisit frequency have a negative impact on it.

Taiwan’s railway heritage is increasing in importance, as demonstrated by the government’s decsion to convert the Taipei Railway Workshop into a railway museum, the growing recognition of the cultural and aesthetic value of Taiwan’s historic railway stations, and the development of neighborhoods nearby these stations. Nonetheless, there is still need for relatively complete and systematic reference material on the subject. Such reference material could be used to assist in the preservation of railway history, to enhance the quality of railway tourism, and to increase the marketability of Taiwan’s railway heritage. In this paper I attempt to fill this gap by discussing the key issues facing the conversion of the Taipei Railway Workshop into a railway museum, while providing guidelines for creating interpretive materials which deepen vistiors’ on-site cultural heritage experience. Adopting Hwang Tichang’s perspective on Localism called ―Place Field Localism and making use of the ―attribute chart‖ this paper developed, I present a case study of the Hsinchu Railway Station. In light of the cultural experience being investigated, a qualitative research methodology is used, employing the file study approach to initiate ―Place Field Localism tools with a broad application. While reveiwing the related literature on culture, tourism, and marketing, I discovered that most studies only cover one or two of these topics, and that some merely measure certain aspects of visitors’ experience (such as perceived value, satisfaction, likelihood of revisiting, story maketing, experiment makets, or slow tourism ), and then infer that everybody will have the same response. Such approaches, however, fail to make an analysis and synthesis of the central nature of on-site cultural heritage experience. I also found that the concept of localism called ―Place Localism‖ is already well developed in the West and East, as is Hwang’s concept of ―Place Field Localism in Taiwan, and that Hwang has integrated the West and East based on his concept of ―life epistemology. This is a research approach with much potential. Thus in this research I draw on the perspectives of localism, civil engineering knowledge, and Taiwan’s civil engineering culture to formulate charts on selection and classification, an attribute chart based on of ―Place Field Localism, and examples of written interpretation. These materials can be used as reference for developing written interpretive materials which provide visitors with a ―deep cultural experience. study of the Hsinchu Railway Station. In recent years, the domestic tourism has been booming, and the people had paid attention to the quality of leisure tour gradually. Therefore, the railway tourism also has been booming simultaneously. The railway transport is one kind of green transportation, and it has the characteristic such as high passenger carrying capacity, safety, energy saving, and punctuality, and so on, so that the railway tourism will have a highly potential development in the future. Taiwan Railway Administration (TRA) had a lot of branch lines in the past, but now only three branch lines have the touring development planning, and the other branch lines either had be abandoned or still under the evaluation procedures. This study selects Chi-Chi Line as an example, and uses the questionnaires to figure out the problems, the image, and the revisiting willingness of Chi-Chi Line. In addition, the study utilizes the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to explore the relationships among visitors’ characteristic, attractiveness, satisfaction and revisiting willingness of Chi-Chi Line for TRA. The effective questionnaires of this study are 390 samples. Using the confirmatory factor analysis and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to analyze the data, the major results are listed as below: (1) visitors’ attractiveness of Chi-Chi Line has positive affection to tourist satisfaction; (2) visitors’ attractiveness of Chi-Chi Line has positive affection to revisiting willingness; (3) satisfaction has positive affection to revisiting willingness; (4) visitors’ motivation of Chi-Chi Line has positive affection to revisiting willingness. Dongshan Station is Taiwan’s first railway station built and renovated for tourism and recreational purposes. With an awe-inspiringly unique exterior design, the post-renovation Dongshan Station looks like a gigantic piece of art. Considering that the renovation was completed five years ago in the year 2008, this study conducted literature reviews, questionnaire surveys, and expert interviews to examine tourism-related issues after the renovation of Dongshan Station from the perspectives of residents and non-residents. Data collected from the “questionnaire for residents” were analyzed by means of the one-way ANOVA to examine how residents’ personal background variables affected residents’ opinions on the correlation between the renovation of Dongshan Station and tourism development. Further, the three common factors “benefits of renovation”, “tourism development”, and “living environment” were extracted by using the Principle Component Analysis (PCA). The analysis revealed that there was room for improvements in some dimensions of the two constructs “benefits of renovation” and “living environment”. Data collected from the “questionnaire for non-residents” were analyzed by means of the one-way ANOVA to examine how non-residents’ personal background variables affected non-residents’ opinions on the correlation between the renovation of Dongshan Station and tourism development. Furthermore, the two common factors “sense of identification and attractiveness” and “planning and management” were extracted by using the PCA. For areas where there was room for improvements, relevant authorities could work on the improvements. Lastly, the Pearson product-moment correlation was used to analyze three question items in relation to tourism attractiveness from the constructs “planning and management” and “sense of identification and attractiveness”. It can be inferred that the renovation of Dongshan Station could work on directions such as design concepts, planning of the surrounding areas, and attitudes of station personnel when providing services in order to enhance tourism attractiveness. Finally, SWOT was adopted to examine Dongshan Station’s internal and external conditions. Strategies to maintain the existing strength, compensate for the weakness, seize the opportunities, and minimize threats were generated based on results of the SWOT analysis. Future researchers can consider factors such as sources of funds, integration of resources, and coordination, and further study and compare relevant local and foreign cases of railway station renovation.

In recent years, due to inscribe World Heritage Lists has been a guarantee to promote tourism industry. It is also represent World Heritage and Cultural Tourism both mentioned in the same breath. As high quality of cultural tourism, active strategy is inseparable from management. World Heritage properties often show the intrinsic features with adaptive-reuse, educational facilities and other exhibition. According to documents of the World Tourism Organization: “Culture is the driving force for tourism”. General speaking, people travels not only for recreation and entertainment but also to satisfy their diverse demands and curiosity of different way of living. Such religions, festivals, clothing, food, arts, crafts, architecture, music, dance, folklore and literature all shape the way of living. In other words, human culture enhances and glorify through tangible and intangible cultural heritage. We can even say that culture and tourism are interdependent. Part of the intangible heritage which has been forgotten by the younger generation may be remembered again through tourism experience. The cultural tourist revenue can support the conservation and preservation of the tangible cultural heritage. Through experience, narrative and education, people will have a better understanding and get closer to cultural heritage. Therefore cultural heritage plays a greater role in Cultural Tourism fields. The tourism industry is a positive business strategy combined with cultural property. In the situation of the heritage tourism development in Taiwan, cultural property has long been considered only about the restoration of the monuments. It means to preserve cultural property as whole, not preserve as part of historical resources. Therefore, “cultural property” is still being ignored in the tourism industry in Taiwan. Not to mention establishing the cultural significance to its unique tourist attraction in the future or enhancing the overall tourism added value to create future economic benefits. In the context of historic preservation and sustainable development, this thesis attempts to construct a diverse, sustainable and tourism attractive heritage tourism network which contains Taiwanese potential World Heritage Sites. Then, it will discuss three main developing framework: integrating future development, uncovering unknown characteristics, and combining regional resources. Meanwhile, this thesis will analyze heritage tourism cases in Britain and Japan to find out workable operating system and developing framework for the heritage tourism and environmental characteristics in Taiwan. finally, this thesis expects to resolve dilemma of tourism in Taiwan and to address practicable way of re-use project and also new opportunity in the future.

Railway is the largest and complete transportation infrastructure in Taiwan. In recent years, the preservation of cultural assets has also been highly valued by all parties. How to achieve sustainable development through the development of cultural tourism is an important issue facing various cultural parks. The Hualien Railway Cultural Park is a county-level monument. It is the only remaining intact railway base in Taiwan. It has important memories of its civilized development and the rise and fall of the history of the region. After the establishment of the Railway Cultural Park, the most important thing is to formulate a tourism marketing strategy. In order to allow the park assets to survive forever, this study focuses on the theory of cultural tourism marketing. Through literature collection and other case analysis, the industry and academia are invited to conduct interviews, and the factors of SWOT are analyzed and analyzed to derive the TOWS matrix. This study believes that the WO strategy should be adopted to use external opportunities to improve internal disadvantages, and the development of the centrally-led park as a whole is the strategic goal of choice for the railway cultural park. At the same time, dialogues are held with the competent authorities through railway fans and in-depth tourism demanders. , expanding its topicality as a strategic focus. Under the WO strategy, we developed a suitable marketing strategy as a reference for the development of the Hualien Railway Cultural Park.

Taiwan Railways has been a pivot of inland logistic in Taiwan. The three branches of Taiwan Railways, being used to be quiet busy transportations, are once programmed to be suspended owing to their causing constant deficits; this tactic made residents near branches petition for tourism transformation. In recent years under every level of government doing their best endeavors to promote cultural tourism, each railway branch incorporate local sightseeing events which already become new trend in contemporary tourism. Taking Jingtong community as an example, this research explores the effect of railway culture on the development of Jingtong community. It manifests how residents in this community make use of railway and remains of ancient industry to prompt community consciousness, protect remaining industries, and create new opportunity to attract touring crowds; at the same time also investigates community reformation and how railway culture professionals via culture innovation, remains of local coal mines and railway culture to make beatific atmosphere of vestige and leisure. Using content analysis as a research method, this research collects documents, reflections of visiting foreign railway business models and adds on in-depth residential interview. The research results indicate that the way resorts to develop railway tourism successfully are characterized by distinctness, remembrance, uniqueness, community consciousness, and so on. The railways should possess policy, touring, historical origin, and culture. There are developmental conditions above in Jingtong, but residents’ community consciousness has not been entirely reinforced yet. After all, the research proposals are recommended for the sake of tourism developments in Jingtong community and future management tactics of Taiwan Railways on the basis of research results.

The market segment composed by university students as tourists is, for the most part, approached as a synonym of youth travel, ignoring the fact that, being segments that overlap each other (university students are mostly young people) they present characteristics that distinguish them. Young people that nowadays compose these two segments are members of generation Z, and some younger millennials, and that means that they are strongly connected to technology, innovation and escapism. The present study aims at objectively defining what youth tourism is, to afterwards distinguish the segment composed by university students. Thus, we propose investigating the root cause of the mixture of both groups that, although distinct, cross each other in several domains. For this purpose, characteristics as motivations to travel, sources of information, booking methods, financing methods, expenses, transportation, accommodation, activities, length of stay, time of the year to travel and the influence of the school period in the length of stay and in the time of the year to travel were looked at.Railway transportation was, when it first appeared, the most relevant means of transportation, having a key role in the development of mass tourism. After its decline it was necessary to find ways of making the train relevant again. It is in that context that the Interrail pass appears, offering European youth a way of discovering their continent trough the railway. Consequently, Interrail became an adventure desired by young people from every generation since it surfaced in 1972.On a more practical note, this research aimed at, understand what were the characteristics of the young university students regarding their tourism travel (characteristics such as motivations, financing, transport and accommodation preferences or the influence of school period on the time of the year to travel and the length of stay were looked at), and understand what is the relationship that students currently have with Interrail travel. The study was done through the application of a questionnaire survey to the students of the University of Coimbra, to a total sample of 410 students, applied first in June 2019 and later between October and November 2019,The results show that, in fact, young university students share a lot of characteristics with the segment of youth travel, despite their differences. The results also validated that, despite of being viewed as an adventure and being in the future plans of a lot of students, Interrail is not a way of travelling that students search for in their tourism travels nowadays. Some measures to invert this situation are also suggested.

The study is based on consumer behavior and market segmen- tation theories. It explored the touring behaviors of the A-li Mountain Forestry Railway passengers, such as their social and economic background, touring characteristics, riding motives, the expectant touring benefit and the degree of satisfaction. Second, based on the visitors'' expectant touring benefit before they riding on the train, market segmentation was studied, and a series initial marketing strategies was proposed. The study adopted qualitative analysis and quantitative ana-lysis simultaneously. In the part of the qualitative analysis, in- depth interviews to visitors were conducted. The key contents of these interviews included the touring motives, the characteri- stics of the railway, the comparison between the railway and the road, the loyalty and the will to re-visit the A-li Mountain, the degree of satisfaction and suggestions. The outcome shows that the attributes of benefit which the visitors pursue are the natural landscape, the characteristics of the railway, the facilities and services, and some psychological factors. Most visitors were satisfied with the railway touring experiences, yet, they proposed many managerial suggestions as well. This outcome was used to be the basis of the quantitative analysis and the reference of market-ing strategies. The quantitative analysis, which is aimed at the train-riding visitors, proceeded calling on the visitors with structured ques-tionnaires. The content of the questionnaire include personal basic data, the touring characteristics, and the 27 items of the degree of the agreement and satisfaction. The outcome shows that most visitors were at the age between 15~44, single, residing in southern Taiwan. Besides, colleagues, classmates and family members were the major touring companions, and the main sources of the tour information were the relatives and friends. The outcome shows different social and economic backgrounds influence parts of the touring benefit of the visitors in the degree of agreement and that of satisfaction. The cluster analysis suggested that the visitors can be divided into six groups. Every group makes a certain extent of difference in the value of the touring benefit after experiencing the tour. To sum up, concerning the management of the A-li Mountain Forestry Railway, the study proposed strategies pertaining to the product strategy, the price strategy, the channel strategy and the promotion strategy.

The Pingxi Line, Neiwan Line and Jiji Line of the Taiwan Railway Administration (TRA) attract many visitors on weekends, and that will decrease the level of service. In the meantime, the revenue of these three lines is less than the expending. Therefore, this study focuses on adjusting the ticket price based without change the basic fare rate, and the goal to increase the revenue of TRA. Furthermore, the multinomial logit model is used to analyze the mode choice under three different alternatives of the ticket price adjustment. In this study, 286 cases are analyzed, the result shows that 80.4% of respondents are travel for tourism purposes; 62.2% of respondents would be able to accept a 10% higher price on the weekend than the price on a weekday; and respondents prefer to choose the bus at their alternative mode. Using the mode choice analysis method, the significant variables include (1)the mode using to go to the branch line station, (2)the frequency on the train, (3)the occupation, (4)income, (5)age. The result shows that the recommendation of the alternative in the ticket price selects the zonal pricing fare, such as 10 kilometers at one zone, and increase 20% higher price on weekends, and 20% discount for the commuters. This recommended ticket price adjusting alternative estimates to increase 37.9% ticket revenue. In addition, due to the price of ticket is increasing in the weekends, these will be 48.6% of travels will shift from the weekends to weekdays.

The research theme of the thesis is to evaluate the strategies of culture tourism on a case study of Taiwan railway Jiji line. Through ways of literature review, situation analysis and expert brainstorming technique, the thesis collects relevant evaluating dimensions and principles which may affect the strategies and it also establish two aspects on both the benefit and cost sides. Under each aspects, there are three dimensions, nine principles and three strategies on a four-level evaluating structure. Further, questionnaire and expert interview are conducted to decide the percentage weight of each evaluating principles. Furthermore, AHP and CBA are used to evaluate the strategies and come up with the optimal tourism strategies on railway culture for reference. There are three feasible strategies proposed in the thesis, namely: Strategy A: assigning private institute for partial operation rights, which include acquiring operating route, developing land and operating right of ancillary enterprises; Strategy B: assigning private institute for partial operation rights, which include acquiring land for development and operating right of ancillary enterprises; Strategy C: assigning private institute for full operation rights. The result of comparison and analysis shows that strategy C is the optimal one. The strategy contains full operation rights of a private institute on Jiji line, which include acquiring operating route, related land for development and operating right of its ancillary businesses(enterprises). In addition, the private institute is also responsible for the maintenance of the rail line and vehicles. However, Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) still has the ownership of the land. When the assigning operation period is due, all building assets, whether newly built or renovated ones, and related facilities shall transfer and return to TRA. The research result can provide reference for the Ministry of Transportation and Communications as well as TRA while assigning a private institute on the operation of Jiji line.

124 years have elapsed since the North-South Line and the North and South link lines around the island were completed. The railway has been an important transportation line in Taiwan. Its branches not only contribute to the development of the industries, cities and rural areas, but also witness the magic of the railway economy. However, the number of passengers who take trains has declined dramatically since the launch of the high speed rail system. The newly established system reduces the stops along the line, shortens the distance between two places and provides passengers with a variety of schedule options. On the other hand, operation of the high speed rail system brings a new milestone for the railway; it lacks the exceptional branch linking capability of Taiwan Railway. To be in line with the trend and ensure sustainable development, Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) introduces the cruise-style train to the market with innovative thinking. It combines local historic and cultural features of each train station on the main line and elaborately arranges exclusive trips by train so that tourists can have a special experience of railway tour. To celebrate the ROC Centennial, TRA offers the “railway relay around the island and a pilgrimage to centenary train stations” activity series from October 2010 to October 2011. 12 locomotives of different generations are selected for the activity and each locomotive is assigned to a month. They will run around the island within 12 months like a relay run. In this study with cruise-style train ROC Centennial series as the research target, the tourists as the main object.
