Abstract:
Floods are considered to be among of the deadliest, costliest and most common natural disasters. Rapid onset, catastrophic floods inundate the shore quickly and manifest as deep water with high velocities. The deep water and high velocities caused by these floods inflict great pressures and forces on the built and natural environments and pose a threat to human safety. Recent disasters such as Hurricane Katrina in the Southern United States and the Sumatra tsunami in the Indian Ocean have revealed that communities at risk require improved preparations for these types of dangerous events. The dystonias are a common group of movement disorders, which are mechanistically poorly understood. Rapid-onset dystonia-parkinsonism (RDP) is a hereditary movement disorder without neurodegeneration resulting from mutations in the ATP1A3 gene encoding the α3-isoform of the Na+/K+ ATPase. RDP patients are generally asymptomatic until a stressful life event triggers disease onset. Basal Ganglia dysfunction has previously been implicated in RDP aaetiology. Abstract:
Drought is conventionally known as a slow-developing natural hazard. In recent years, a subset of drought events characterized by rapid onset has been identified and deemed “flash” droughts. These flash droughts can result in rapid soil drying and rapid vegetation degradation making them damaging to agriculture and the economy, so it is essential to develop reliable early warning systems for flash drought events. This study aims to compare the climatology between flash and non-flash droughts across the Contiguous United States (CONUS) and regionally to identify key differences in the drought t
