Abstract:
This thesis investigates the behavioural functions of the ascending noradrenergic projections from the locus coeruleus to forebrain regions such as the neocortex and hippocampus in the dorsal noradrenergic ascending bundle (DNAB). The behavioural effects of lesions to the DNAB were assessed during the neurotoxin 6-hydroxydopamine, which reduces cortical NA levels to about 5 percent of control values. The neuroanatomical specificity of the behavioural deficits was also assessed, either through comparison with the effects of lesions in the trajectory of the lateral tegmental NA cell bodies (vent

The thesis examines the ability of animals to construct a home base. The home base is a point in space where animals rear, groom, and circle and is a primary element in organized spatial behaviour (Eilam and Golani 1989). The home base behaviour of animals acts as a platform for asking questions about the cognitive organization of an environment. The thesis describes five main findings. Many significant features of alcohol dependence have been replicated in rodent animal models of alcoholism, however not in totality. These animal models include inbred preferring (iP) and nonpreferring (iNP) rat types. Congenic rats have been engineered from the iP and iNP strains whereby a P congenic rat has in its genome a well-chosen chromosomal portion taken from an NP rat (P.NP) and, reciprocally, an NP congenic rat has acquired the analogous

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)
Differences in voluntary consumption of ethanol have been negatively correlated with differences in initial sensitivity and tolerance to ethanol’s pharmacological effects. From this perspective, both adolescent and adult alcohol-nonpreferring (NP) rats would be expected to be initially more sensitive to the sedative and hypothermic effects of ethanol and fail to acquire tolerance to those effects than preferring (P) rats. The first objective of this experiment was to assess alcohol-induced hypothermia and locomotor sedation in adoles

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)
Aromatase inhibitors (AIs) are the current standard of care for the treatment of hormone receptor positive breast cancer in postmenopausal women. Nearly one-half of patients receiving AI therapy develop musculoskeletal toxicity that is characterized by joint and/or muscle pain and approximately one-fourth of patients discontinue their therapy as a result of musculoskeletal pain. Since there are no effective strategies for prevention or treatment, insight into the mechanisms of AI-induced pain is critical to improve treatment. However
