Most scientific papers are distributed in PDF format, which is by default inaccessible to blind and low vision audiences and people who use assistive reading technology. These access barriers hinder and may even deter members of these groups from pursuing careers or opportunities that necessitate the reading of technical documents. In cases where no accessible versions of papers are made available by publishers or authors, the gold standard for PDF document accessibility is PDF remediation. Remediation is the process by which a PDF is made accessible by fixing accessibility errors, for example

This paper reviews the literature on reading continuous text from VDUs. The focus is on the reported nature, and potential causes, of reading differences between paper and screens. The first section outlines the scope of the present review. Section 2 discusses the nature of the reported differences between reading from either presentation medium. Five broad differences have been identified suggesting that reading from VDUs is slower, less accurate, more fatiguing, decreases comprehension and is rated inferior by readers. Evidence for the existence of each of these differences is reviewed and c

Manually typing long numbers on paper invoices is tedious and timeconsuming work. The task of typing all the fields of an invoice into a text editor was given to two subjects working with bookkeeping, and the average time consumed was measured to be five minutes. The time and cost spent on manual typing will accumulate for companies that receive a lot of invoices. Swedbank along with other banks, have addressed this issue with a mobile application that reads and interprets the numbers on an invoice using the built in camera. Abstract The determination of the concentration of soluble salts on a surface prior to the application of paint is a key inspection task for most protective coating processes. The entrapment of soluble salts, particularly on a steel surface can lead to premature coating adhesion failure and corrosion cells being established.
