Hyder, Eileen. "Reading together : an ethnographic study of a reading group for visually-impaired people." Thesis, University of Reading, 2010. http://centaur.reading.ac.uk/40074/.

Full text
Abstract:
Because reading groups historically have been under-researched (Long, 2003), the literature in this field is limited, presenting this as an interesting area for researchers. A need for further research is also explained by the fact that the traditional model of a reading group has been expanded through recent library policies leading to the development of specific group types such as groups for visually-impaired people (VIPs). To date, there have been no long-term empirical studies of these groups. This thesis, therefore, makes a significant contribution to the literature in this field by prov

In this critical reading of Nadine Gordimer’s July’s People, the study investigates how different power structures affect the points of view and identity processes of the novel’s main characters. S. In particular, the ongoing and unfinished history of objects and bodies represented in the novel and how these relate to whiteness and the process of “othering” is explored. Abstract:
This thesis argues that novels depicting characters who exist outside of the social order have become integral to a twenty-first century corpus of British fiction for children and adolescents. This, in part, is as a result of a changing socio-political landscape in Britain post-2000 in which discussions of who does and does not ‘belong’ are becoming increasingly amplified. It will be shown that, against such a backdrop, fiction for young people written between 2001 and 2012 works to counter and challenge mainstream discourses prevalent in, for example; the media.
