Abstract:
In natural conversations, words are generally shorter and they often lack segments. It is unclear to what extent such durational and segmental reductions affect word recognition. The present study investigates to what extent reduction in the initial syllable hinders word comprehension, which types of segments listeners mostly rely on, and whether listeners use word duration as a cue in word recognition. We conducted three experiments in Dutch, in which we adapted the gating paradigm to study the comprehension of spontaneously uttered conversational speech by aligning the gates with the edges o

Word reduction refers to how predictable words are shortened in features such as duration, intensity, or pitch. However, its origin is still unclear: Are words reduced because it is the second time that conceptual representations are activated, or because words are articulated twice? If word reduction is conceptually driven, it would be irrelevant whether the same referent is mentioned twice but using different words. However, if is articulatory, using different words for the same referent could prevent word reduction. In the present work, we use bilingualism to explore the conceptual or artic

Abstract This paper examines the register associated with headlines in Malagasy. While in many languages headlines appear to have reduced structure as evidenced by the absence of certain grammatical markers (determiners, copulas, tense), Malagasy headlines show a change in word order from VOS to SVO. It is argued that like English, Malagasy headlines involve a truncated syntactic structure and that the absence of certain functional projections accounts for the change in word order.

Reading familiar words differs from reading unfamiliar non-words in two ways. First, word reading is faster and more accurate than reading of unfamiliar non-words. Second, effects of letter length are reduced for words, particularly when they are presented in the right visual field in familiar formats. Two experiments are reported in which right-handed participants read aloud non-words presented briefly in their left and right visual fields before and after training on those items. Phonetic variation as found in various speech styles is a rich area for research on spoken word recognition. Research on spoken word recognition has focused on careful, easily controlled speech styles. This dissertation investigates the processing of the American English Flap. Specifically, it focuses on the effect of reduction on processing. The main question asked in this dissertation is whether listeners adjust their expectations for how segments are realized based on speech style. Even more broadly, how do listeners process or recognize reduced speech? Two specific questions are asked that

They described progress with their research since the previous project meeting in October 2017, discussed open issues and made plans for a final project report giving details of outcomes of the CRP and for future research work relevant to the project. The proceedings of the meeting are sum

Abstract:
High-fidelity computational simulations of aerodynamics and structural dynamics on rotorcraft are essential for helicopter design, testing, and evaluation. These simulations usually entail a high computational cost even with modern high-performance computing resources. Reduced order models can significantly reduce the computational cost of simulating rotor revolutions. However, reduced order models are less accurate than traditional numerical modeling approaches, making them unsuitable for research and design purposes. This study explores the use of a new modified Neural Ordinary Differential

Abstract:
New regulations and modifications to existing environmental regulations are currently underway. The natural gas industry has consistently attempted to mitigate the release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Blowdown mitigation represents an opportunity to directly reduce the extent of methane emissions released to the atmosphere and can have an immediate positive impact on reducing the effects of global warming. This work presents the current techniques available to minimize blowdowns by the pipeline industry during repair and replacements based on research and interviews. Industry best

Abstract:
This work examined previously developed injection mold inserts with reduced thermal mass, with regard to lightweight construction approaches. These were optimised for oil-variothermal temperature control using simulative support. Additive manufacturing (AM), with its high degree of freedom in design, enables the implementation of individual, conformal cooling channels and can additionally support the efficiency of the variothermal process. The thermal mass of the injection mold is often a limiting factor in terms of process efficiency, which is also addressed in the analysis and optimisation c

Vagnoni, Cristiana. Which SARS-CoV-2 variants reduce the effectiveness of vaccines? Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.58248/rr65.

Full text
Abstract:
New SARS-CoV-2 variants identified around the world could have an impact on current vaccination programmes. What is the latest evidence on the effectiveness of the COVID-19 vaccines used in the UK on new variants? How quickly can these vaccines be updated and approved? What alternative strategies can be used?
