Abstract:
ABSTRACT Shadowing, a language learning technique, involves learners’ immediate repetition of spoken language, aiming to mimic nativelike speech. This article demonstrates how the shadowing technique can be utilized as a semester-long project in intermediate Korean classes in order to provide extensive pronunciation and speaking practice. The article presents weekly schedules and discusses the implementation of feedback and assessments. This study found that integrating the Shadowing Project fostered students’ agency, confidence, and motivation in speaking while requiring minimal modifications

Abstract The aim of this paper is to present speech shadowing (the listener’s repetition of a word, phrase or sentence immediately after hearing it) as an effective teaching technique. Shadowing has been practiced in English classes in Japan for decades and many studies have confirmed its effectiveness for improving learners’ listening comprehension and pronunciation skills. Even though some studies have already indicated that this technique is successfully used in teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (CFL) (Zajdler & Chu 2019), its potential has not been widely utilized in the Chinese c

Shadowing enhances second-language learners’ listening comprehension and the memorization of multiword expressions. However, it remains unclear whether the number of repetitions required varies based on different aspects of shadowing effectiveness. This study involved 30 Japanese university students who participated in 11 shadowing training sessions, each lasting 90 minutes per week. Pre- and post-intervention tests measured their improvements in listening comprehension, multiword expression knowledge, bottom-up processing, and repetition speed. The number of shadowing repetitions completed bo

The shadowing technique (shadow repeat, echo repeat) is a highly effective method for developing listening comprehension, pronunciation, and fluency in foreign language learning. Unlike traditional passive listening exercises, shadowing requires learners to actively repeat spoken language in real-time, reinforcing their auditory processing and speech production skills. This article explores the importance, effectiveness, and challenges of shadowing in language education. A comparative analysis demonstrates its superiority over dictation, repetition drills, and translation-based methods. Additi

This article addresses the impact of forward error correction when applied to the report channel transmissions of a centralized decision fusion cooperative spectrum sensing scheme designed to detect idle orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) subchannels. The OFDMA signal is transmitted over slow frequency-selective multipath Rayleigh fading channels and sensed using the maximum eigenvalue detection test statistic. The decisions on the OFDMA subchannel occupancy are transmitted to a fusion center over report channels represented by a shadowed fading model combining a three-dimen

In this paper, I am going to discuss the fundamental function of two seemingly-similar activities, shadowing and repetition. To examine this, I made a small classroom study in which a total of 44 university students engaged. Along with the obtained data, I will discuss the primary function of each activity. 本稿では、一見類似している二つの活動(シャドーイングとリピーティング)の基本的機能について論じる。44名の大学生を対象に教室内実験を行った。そのデータをもとに、それぞれの活動の主要な機能について議論する。

Listening skills play a pivotal role in second language acquisition, as they are crucial for effective communication and language proficiency. This scientific article explores various strategies and techniques that can enhance listening skills in the context of second language learning. It highlights the importance of active listening, authentic materials, graded listening exercises, note-taking, repetition and shadowing, dictation exercises, online resources, engaging in conversations, exposure to different accents, and regular practice. We begin by noting that, in addition to the more or less established trends of cognitive modelling and neurolinguistic or behavioural experimentation, a more recent orientation in research on interpreting (IR) as a complex cognitive process is functional neuroimaging. We then describe current brain imaging methods — electroencephalography, magnetoencephalography, positron emission tomography, functional magnetic resonance imaging, and near-infrared spectroscopy — and provide selected examples of their use in language processing and interpreting research, accompanied with brief evaluations of t

Abstract:
The technique of echo-repetition, or shadowing, has gained popularity as a way of individual or independent copying of pronunciation of a foreign speaker. The article considers the potential and prospects of using such a technique during the practice of simultaneous translation. The brief analysis of native and foreign literature conveys the interest of both theorists and practitioners in the methodology of developing listening skills when learning a foreign language. The research consists in updating the most effective (from the author’s point of view) methods of working with audio material.
