IMPROBABILITIES, CROSSOVERS, AND IMPOSSIBILITIES | Extending and to some extent revising some of his earlier work, James Phelan in this essay examines three kinds of “unnatural”departures from the mimetic code. Homological analysis has played a part in rhetorical criticism to uncover unexpected common forms that connect otherwise disparate groups and contexts. This article investigates how to use homologies as discursive prototypes when designing compelling forms and developing design solutions to complex problems in a rhetorical vein. Two different cases are presented for illustration that share a focus on Kegel exercises. One is an activist campaign, a fictitious party established during the Danish national election in 2019 to counter the far-right party Stram Kurs (Hard Line) by way of humor and c

Some scholars prefer to work only epistolographically and others only rhetorically. The problem arises when some scholars try to combine these two perspectives, resulting in an approach in which the body of the letter is studied rhetorically and the letter opening and closing epistolographically. Abstract:
Zeno’s argument against plurality in the Parmenides does not support the view that there is only one object in the world—only the view that every object in the world is one. Socrates counters that every sensible object can be many by participating in Forms, but none of the Forms can be many. Parmenides retorts that participation is not consistent with the Forms’ unity. The dialectic Parmenides offers derives a series of contradictions from supposing either that each Form is one or that it is many (that is, qualified by any other feature). The implicit solution is that participation must allow the Forms to participate in one another without losing their essential unity. The net result, central to the Academy’s educational programme, is to articulate, for the first time, the concept of predication as we understand it today. Its results are summarized in the Sophist’s discussion of ‘Greatest Kinds’.

Abstract:

Abstract:
It is no doubt significant that on the sole occasion (to my knowledge) when Derrida provides a positive characterization of what forgiveness is or might be, it is by means of the interpretation of a joke: “Two Jews, long-time enemies, meet at the synagogue, on the Day of Atonement [le jour du Grand Pardon]. One says to the other [as a gesture, therefore, of forgiveness—J. D.]: ‘I wish for you what you wish for me.’ The other immediately retorts: ‘Already you’re starting again?’” In the mutual recognition between the two enemies that forgiveness is impossible, Derrida suggests a certain compassion, even perhaps forgiveness, passes between them. Under the sign of a perhaps, the imagined laughter between the two Jews is “the regime of a possible whose possibilization must prevail over the impossible.” On this basis I interpret Derrida’s forgiveness as a messianic promise, a forgiveness to come, whose temporality must be distinguished from Jean Améry’s “natural time-sense,” i.e., the foreseeable future of reconciliation and normalization founded on amnesia.

Abstract:
Gall and Spurzheim arrived in Paris during October 1807, while the Napoleonic Wars were still raging and where Napoleon Bonaparte was reshaping every aspect of society. Napoleon despised foreigners and considered Gall’s doctrine absurd. He urged Georges Cuvier, one of his appointed guardians of French science, to reject it. Nonetheless, Gall made inroads, giving public lectures and demonstrations on his organologie that were well received, while seeing patients to support himself. Encouraged by these ventures, he and Spurzheim wrote a Mémoire and submitted it to the Institut National in 1808. Cuvier, who headed the evaluating committee and was being guided by Napoleon, rejected it as unoriginal and unsuitable for the division for Sciences Mathématiques et Physiques, even though the subject matter was basic anatomy and not more controversial organologie. Gall was furious and sent letters expressing his disappointment to Cuvier, but to no avail. Consequently, he published a book covering the submission, the rejection, and his retorts. And rather than leaving France, he opted to continue his lecturing and medical practice in the city with many amenities, and he continued to work on a series of volumes he was already calling his “great work.”

Abstract:
In the level 2 state of assertiveness, we are tranquil, assertive, and powerful. Our voice is calm. Our face is neutral to soft. We are fair- minded and strong. Conflict is easily and efficiently resolved. Neither apologetic nor needlessly assertive, our frame of mind in this stage is to take care of the problem quickly and efficiently, so that there is no longer a problem. We neither shrink from nor plow our way through the situation. In level 2, we become adept at stating and displaying an adequate degree of assertiveness. Our actions in this level can be so adept that we hardly know there could have been a problem. The confidence that builds in level 2 becomes our norm, and potential conflicts dissolve with balanced and confident responsiveness. Harsh retorts and meek acquiescence are mostly things of the past as we hone our internal and external responses to potential conflict. In the balanced state of level 2, our voice is matter- of- fact, moderate volume, non- threatening, and non- threatened. After much practice, this level becomes more of an automatic reframing and re- visioning of what is happening and what to do about it. Decisions that undergird responses in level 2 may be totally internal, when there is no need for a verbal or external response. Inwardly and outwardly, we feel in near perfect balance. The other’s behavior did not pull us out of our best self. It did not lure us into making a response that was unnecessary. • In response to a waiter bringing the wrong order: “You may have thought I said pasta, but I ordered salmon. What is the possibility that you could bring the salmon in the next ten minutes?” • In response to a noisy student interrupting another: “Allison, it is not your turn. Watch and listen to Meghan.” • In response to a very angry colleague, you choose not to get involved, and you watch the venting with detached observation. Or you calmly leave the scene. Notice that responses in level 2 can carry with them a recommendation or suggestion for what to do next. These exchanges are handled with neutral, soft eyes.
