Si l'importance des temporalités cycliques pour nombre de mythologies archai͏̈ques est reconnue depuis longtemps, la prétention de la modernité d'en avoir terminé avec ces superstitions l'est davantage. En plein cœur d'un XIXe siècle rêvant d'un progrès illimité, Kierkegaard avec La reprise, Marx avec Le dix-huit brumaire de Louis Bonaparte, Nietzsche avec Le gai savoir et Ainsi parlait Zarathoustra, enfin Freud avec Au-delà du principe de plaisir, tous ces penseurs élaborent, coup sur coup, des philosophies de la répétition, venant réinscrire là où on l'avait banni l'éternel retour des choses. Parallèlement à cette résurgence de la répétition en philosophie, dans laquelle s'immisceront aussi Benjamin et Deleuze, s'est élaborée en littérature une singulière pragmatique narrative axée sur la répétition. Ses expressions sont multiples, mais L'éternité par les astres de Louis-Auguste Blanqui, Le Baphomet de Klossowski, Prochain épisode Aquin, ou Les Géorgiques de Simon en constituent les exemples les plus éloquents. Interrogeant le régime d'historicité moderne et sa sémantique propre, ces configurations temporelles paradoxales révèlent la profonde mutation de l'expérience traditionnelle du temps amorcée avec les Lumières et la transformation des modalités de la narrativité qui en est issue. Dans des sociétés où les champs d'expérience et les horizons d'attente se sont dissociés, comment raconter le passage du temps sans oblitérer la conscience du présent comme lieu d'initiative et d'action ? Les poétiques modernes de la répétition s'opposent à la mélancolie qui mobilise l'expérience temporelle moderne et entament un travail de deuil qui les amène, à la suite de Baudelaire, à revendiquer une " mémoire du présent ". Néanmoins, les enjeux soulevés par les poétiques de la répétition dépassent la seule histoire littéraire et permettent d'approcher les conséquences théoriques de la double aporétique entre temps et récit pour la représentation moderne du temps historique<br>The fact that many primitive mythologies were structured by cyclical temporalities is well-known, as is the will of modernity to definitely abandon these old superstitions. Although the XIXth century dreamt of its own progress through the ages, Kierkegaard's Repetition, Marx's The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte, Nietzsche's The Gay Science and Thus Spoke Zarathustra, and Freud's Beyond the Pleasure Principle, these influential works developed philosophies concerned with repetition, reintegrating the eternal recurrence of things where it was banished. Parallel to this resurgence of repetition in philosophy, which also guides the work of Walter Benjamin and Gilles Deleuze, modern literature has experimented with narrative pragmatics based on repetition. The most representative of its numerous expressions are perhaps Louis-Auguste Blanqui's L'éternité par les astres, Pierre Klossowski's Le Baphomet, Hubert Aquin's Prochain épisode and Claude Simon's Les géorgiques. Questioning modern historical thought, these paradoxical temporal configurations reveal the profound mutation, initiated with the Enlightenment, in the traditional experience of time, and the concurrent transformation of the modalities of narrativity. In societies where the space of experience is dissociated from the horizon of expectation, how can one narrate the flux of time without minimizing the consciousness of the present as a space for action and initiative ? Modern poetics of repetition, concerned with the melancholy that penetrates the modern experience of time, begin emerging through mourning into a search for what Baudelaire calls a "memory of the present". Nevertheless, the issues raised by these poetics of repetition not only concern literary history, but shed new light on the theoretical consequences of the aporetics between time and narrative for the modern representation of historical time

Cette thèse a pour objet d’apporter un éclairage sur l’écriture de l’événement en littérature francophone d’Afrique subsaharienne. Elle s’adosse à un corpus composé de huit romans : Un rêve utile (1991), Un attiékè pour Elgass (1993), Bled (2016) du Guinéen Tierno Monénembo, Solo d'un revenant (2008), L’ombre des choses à venir (2011), Cantique de l’acacia (2017) du Togolais Kossi Efoui, Passage des larmes (2003) et Transit (2009) du Djiboutien Abdourahman A. Waberi. Cette recherche met en évidence les manières dont ces auteurs modélisent l’Histoire par une écriture dont la mise en œuvre témoigne d’une expérience du temps et que l’universitaire Jean-François Hamel théorise et nomme la « revenance ». Monénembo, Efoui et Waberi développent leur conception de l’historicité qui est de l’ordre de cette « revenance » en tant que mouvement récurrent et rétrospectif d’un présent qui se retourne constamment vers un passé qu’il rumine en quelque sorte. It is based on a corpus of eight novels: Un rêve utile (1991), Un attiékè pour Elgass (1993), Bled (2016) by Guinean author Tierno Monénembo, Solo d'un revenant (2008), L'Ombre des choses à venir (2011), Cantique de l'acacia (2017) by Togolese author Kossi Efoui, Passage des larmes (2003) and Transit (2009) by Djiboutian author Abdourahman A. Waberi. This research highlights the ways in which these authors model history through writing whose implementation bears witness to an experience of time and which academic Jean-François Hamel theorizes and calls "revenance". Monénembo, Efoui and Waberi develop their conception of historicity, which is of the order of this "revenance" as a recurrent, retrospective movement of a present that constantly returns to a past that it ruminates, as it were. They take history back. Taking it back: in the sense of darning the imaginary formed on a lived history whose reading is made up of misunderstandings; but also seizing the possibility offered by writing of a possible grip on the course of this history

Factual accounts of revenants – the risen dead – seized the medieval imagination in the early eleventh century, and were recorded by serious historians and ecclesiastics as true. They then began to appear in secular imaginative literature and art, growing progressively more elaborate and frightening throughout the Middle Ages whilst retaining many of the religious overtones expressed overtly in the ecclesiastic tales. By the early modern and modern period, the tales were removed from any overt religious context and were told as purely imaginative literature. The academic half of this thesis explores the influence on the tales of the Christian doctrine of resurrection and the cult of the body of Christ and of the saints, then traces the migration of those tales into imaginative literature from the Middle Ages to the present. It identifies key motifs from the medieval chronicles and imaginative literature that continue to appear in modern stories, and explores the extent to which Christian eschatology altered perceptions of the dead and why, in an increasingly secular context, fascination with such tales continued into modern literature, what part fear of death played throughout this period, and how that fear was expressed, first in an ecclesiastical context, then in imaginative literature through horror stories. The creative half of my thesis is a literary fiction novel updating a medieval revenant tale, the Legend of the Three Living and the Three Dead, to twenty-first century New England.

Naguère considérés par les Coréens comme des orphelins victimes d'un trafic d'enfants commence après la guerre, lés adoptés d'origine coréenne sont aujourd'hui accueillis par le gouvernement sud-coréen comme les membres éduqués de la diaspora, garants d'une globalisation réussie. Leur statut dans la société coréenne reste pourtant ambigu comme le montre l'organisation de l'émission hebdomadaire Ach'im matang sur la chaîne nationale qui valorise leur éducation tout en les faisant apparaître aux côtés d'orphelins coréens et d'émigrés qui paraissent tous souffrir de l'absence des liens du sang, de l'école, ou du sol. Ce programme populaire tend à réintégrer les trois groupes dans une communauté de sang, de goût et de sentiments que le discours normalisant des présentateurs crée à partir des souvenirs d'enfance et des dessins des participants coréens. Les liens de l'école et du sol semblent reconstitués quand les adoptés étrangers reçoivent au terme de programmes culturels de quelques semaines organisés par des agences d'adoption ou par le gouvernement depuis les années 90 des diplômes et un certificat de citoyenneté d'honneur les rattachant à une municipalité de Séoul. Les retrouvailles larmoyantes, elles, semblent signaler la reconstitution du lien du sang, mais la scène préfigure plutôt la réunification de la nation : journalistes, politiciens et gens du commun considèrent en effet la guerre et la séparation des deux Corée comme les causes directes et involontaires de la séparation familiale. Les cas présentés à Ach'im matang dévoilent toutefois des pratiques de séparation ou de circulation enfantine dans les familles pauvres, nombreuses ou monoparentales Si l'abandon était définitif, le fosterage, l'adoption, la mise en gage, ou l'envoi à l'orphelinat étaient souvent envisagés comme des solutions temporaires, parmi lesquelles figure aujourd'hui l'adoption internationale. En l'absence des pères, les retrouvailles échouent le plus souvent à reconstituer la parenté dans cette société confucéenne patrilinéaire où la recomposition familiale est encore une exception. Pourquoi dès lors les parents remariés - particulièrement les mères - acceptent-ils de jouer ces scènes dramatiques vouées à l'éphémérité ? Notre hypothèse est que l'enfant perdu ou abandonné est assimilé dans ce contexte à un potentiel mauvais mort dont il faut, comme dans le rite chamanique, pacifier les sentiments hostiles. Le programme télévisé apparaît dès lors comme un rite d'intégration inversé dont le but est de séparer plutôt que de réunir<br>Discarded alter the war and left at the hands of foreign aid, foreign adoptees born in Korea got to be seen as orphans. Victime of baby traffic in the last 80s, when international adoption decupled. Objecte of national shame then, they are called today successful members of the Korean diaspora in the age of globalization. This lasting ambiguity is illustrated by the way Ach'im matang, a popular weekly family reunion television show on KBS (national charnel), valorizes young foreign adoptees' achievements while staging them with older Korean orphans and emigrants. All three groupe are marginal since they Jack fondamental blond, school and soil ties. Out of participants' memories, village maps and drawings, the hosts recreate the part, the countryside, the village, ideal time-space where conservative values of eider generations reigned. The hosts integrate the participants in a community they build by focusing on physical similarities, 'common tartes of fond and common blond. Foreign adoptees' integration to Korean society is pushed further by sommer !cultural programs organized every year since the 90s by adoption agencies, adoptees' organization or the government. On one hand, participants' school and soil ties are recreated by sommer schools certificates and honorary citizenship, which attach them to a district. On the other hand, the dramatic family reunion seems to recreate the blond tie but in fact is rather a symbol of the two Koreas unification: politicians, journaliste or scholars, ail interpret family separation as the direct consequence of the war, as a tragic event which occurred against people' will. The show evokes war but rather emphasizes "practices" of separation or children circulation: children were fostered by relatives or strangers, sent as labor force in rich houses, raised in orphanages or abandoned. Separations were often voluntary but sien temporary solutions mostly for poor, numerous or single parent familier. Today international adoption is often considered the rame way. As fathers never appear on the show reunions are fragile. Mort of family ties expressed at Ach'im matang do rot create kinship. Moreover, in spite of a high rate of divorce, South Korea shows no recomposed families. So why does a~ remarried parent who knows the tie cari be, accept to perform the reunion? Our hypothesis is that lost and abandoned children are regarded as potential inauspicious dead. Parents or the state must fend and turn them into auspicious beings through appeasing rituals, words and offerings. And reintegration rites turn out to be separation rites, which, like shamanistic rituals, aim to leave both rides in peace

The aim of this study is to analyse the popular perception of the walking dead – ‘revenants’ – in medieval England, using both written and archaeological sources. The opening chapter defines the methodology for conducting an interdisciplinary investigation into literary and material ‘texts’. Chapter two investigates the strategies used by the Church to prescribe the rules for a ‘good’ death performance. This will include a brief overview of the evolution of the Western funerary rite from the Roman period to the fifteenth century. The third chapter examines the specific codicological placement of the revenant narratives in William of Newburgh’s Historia Rerum Anglicarum (c.1198), and explores the theological, political and cultural contexts which prompted their transcription and circulation. This examination of the ‘social logic’ of the walking dead will include a critical analysis of the ‘Buckingham Ghost’ narrative. Motifs of pestilence and the spreading of social/physical disorder, so evident in the William’s Historia, are investigated in chapter four. The percipients’ negotiation of religious doctrine, humoural theory, and the traditions of ‘folk’ medicine will be used to explicate why some revenants were considered contagious. The relationship between the somatic experience of the revenant attack and the ‘nightmare’ is also given consideration in this chapter. The final section of this study involves an exploration of the material strategies used to allay the walking dead. I contend that it is indeed possible to draw intertextual analogies between the written sources and unusual/deviant burial practices. The way in which medico-magical knowledge (discussed in chapter four) was utilised to protect the living from the pestilential dead is given special consideration. The aim of chapter five, then, is to analyse the evidence for the fear of the errant corpse in mortuary and landscape contexts. In short, I argue that smaller (unwritten) traditions could be improvised within the prevailing habitus of the local community to form idiosyncratic patterns, or ‘rhetorics’, of apotropaic response.

L'étude des rapports entre ces deux domaines a fait ressortir certaines similitudes, mais surtout des divergences dans l'appréhension du phénomène : pour les démonologues, les apparitions sont presque toujours liées à l'action du Malin, tandis que les dramaturges développent un double discours paradoxal à propos de la figure spectrale, soulignant son autorité tout en remettant en question sa réalité. Au-delà de cette contradiction, le théâtre reflète mieux qu'aucun autre discours l'ambivalence fondamentale du revenant, à la fois humain et surnaturel, mais aussi celle de sa perception en tant que phénomène qui oscille entre crédulité et scepticisme<br>With the rejection of Purgatory by the Reformed Church, the ghosts became a fashionable subject in demonological debates, just as the rediscovery of Seneca encouraged spirits to haunt the European stages. The study of the relations between these two fields shows some similitude but mostly underlines the differences in apprehending the phenomenon itself : for the demonologists, the Devil always lurked behind apparitions of the souls, whereas the playwrights developed a paradoxical ghost figure insisting on its authority but questioning its reality. Beyond this contradiction, drama better than any other genre reflects the ghost's essential ambivalence, both human and supernatural, but also the ambivalence of its perception as a phenomenon, oscillating between credulity and scepticism

Nées dans le sillage des grandes catastrophes historiques du XXe siècle, les œuvres de William Faulkner, Joseph Roth, Claude Simon, Georges Perec et W. G. Sebald interrogent l'héritage paradoxal de la disparition d'une tradition. Si les fantômes de l'histoire reviennent hanter le présent, c'est en effet parce que leur univers a disparu, et avec lui les modes de transmission traditionnels qui assuraient la survivance du monde ancestral et la possibilité de sa représentation. Loin de manifester la présence vive du passé, la hantise semble dès lors accompagner la certitude d'une mort irréparable, perte sèche que ne saurait venir combler aucun monument littéraire ou artistique. Alors que l'économie romantique de la représentation des morts assimilait l'écriture à un tombeau, capable de ressusciter les morts et de réparer la perte, la mémoire des disparus est et demeure dans ces œuvres fondamentalement mélancolique, en tant qu'elle ne cesse de marquer les limites de la résurrection littéraire, et la fragilité d'une entreprise narrative elle-même sujette au travail destructeur du temps. Pourtant, le renoncement au modèle du tombeau scripturaire ne met pas fin à l'exigence de justice qui accompagne toute apparition spectrale. En répondant à l'appel de ce qui est irrémédiablement perdu, les œuvres s'inscrivent dans le cadre d'une mémoire de l'oubli qui tente de rappeler le souvenir des disparus, mais aussi et surtout de conserver la trace de la perte. Archiver ce qui peut l'être, et figurer l'empreinte en creux de l'oublié, c'est le double horizon éthique d'une littérature qui reconnaîtrait à son fondement la réalité d'une disparition sans retour<br>Arising in the wake of the major historical disasters of the XXth century, the works of William Faulkner, Joseph Roth, Claude Simon, Georges Perec and W. G. Sebald question the paradoxical inheritance of a vanishing tradition. When the ghosts of history return to haunt the present, this is because their own universe has disappeared, and with it the traditional ways of transmission which ensured the survival of the ancestral world, as well as its representation. Rather than demonstrating the living presence of the past, this haunting presence thus seems to escort the certainty of an unredeemable death, a loss which no literary or artistic monument could make up for. Whereas Romantic representations of the dead associated writing with a form of grave-digging, capable both of resurrecting the dead and making up for their loss, the memory of the departed, in these narratives, is and remains fundamentally melancholic, insofar as it constantly marks the limits of literary resurrection and the fragility of narrative attempts in themselves threatened by the destructive power of Time. However, this departure from the model of the scriptural grave by no means stifles the call for justice accompanying such spectral apparitions. By answering the call of that which is irretrievably lost, these works bear the imprint of a process of memory and oblivion which attempts to recall the memory of the departed, but most of all to keep a trace of their loss. The double ethical pursuit of works such as these, built on the full recognition of the reality of unredeemable death, is to record what can possibly be recorded, and to mark the empty place of that which is beyond recall

L'étude de l'œuvre de Patrick Kermann permet de dresser les contours d'un théâtre où la parole des morts met en péril la mimésis et devient un véritable pari sur l'absence. Les différentes voix donnent une présence aux disparus, constituant la charpente du drame à travers un matériau sonore très dense, discontinu et hétérogène. La composition rythmique ouvre sur une polyphonie de voix qui génère un appel désespéré des morts n'ayant pas trouvé de place parmi les vivants. Une première partie traite de la dramaturgie de l'après où les disparus reviennent pour dire leur désastre intime et la barbarie du monde. Une deuxième partie déplace l'analyse sous l'angle de la dramaturgie sonore et examine comment la partition textuelle fait résonner la langue privilégiant une réception auditive qui n'est pas sans mettre en question la position du lecteur et, plus encore peut-être, celle du spectateur. Ainsi, ces voix abandonnées rencontrent-elles des metteurs en scène qui les accueillent en leur proposant des espaces singuliers faits pour répondre au trouble que crée l'écoute des corps absents<br>The study of Patrick Kermann's work makes it possible to draw up the contours of a drama in which the words of the dead endanger the mimesis and become a real wager on absence. The different voices give presence to the departed, forming the framework of the drama through very condensed, intermittent and heterogeneous sound material. The rhythmic composition opens up on a polyphony of voices which produces a desperate appeal from the dead who have found no place among the living. A first part deals with the dramatic effects of what follows, when those who disappeared come back to relate their intimate disaster and the barbarity of the world. A second part moves the analysis to the angle of sonorous dramatic art and examines the way in which the textual score causes the language to resound, privileging auditory reception, which is not without questioning the reader's position and, perhaps, even more, that of the spectator. Thus it is that these abandoned voices meet producers who greet them with offers of unexpected areas intended to be an answer to the confusion resulting from listening to absent bodies

On 10 January 2014, the New York Times placed Cape Town at the top of its list of the "52 places to go in 2014". The hopeful rhetoric of the city as ultimate holiday destination, African creative metropolis, prime global-events location and city of freedom indicates powerful cultural discourses at work. Looking at how Cape Town is simultaneously reinvented and haunted, this thesis poses a set of questions regarding the discourses associated with the reinvention of the city, on the one hand, and the city's unresolved pasts, on the other. Situated at the convergence of two fields, Urban Studies and Heritage Studies, it sets out to investigate the workings of heritage and urban-design discourses in the city of Cape Town over the period of 2002 to 2014. It describes the unfolding of these discourses, and discusses the organisational process of both the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the 2014 World Design Capital in relation to the exhumation of human remains at District One and the restitution of land at District Six. Using as its methodology a combination of embedded ethnographic research, qualitative indepth interviews, desktop and archival research, and a form of embodied research, the thesis points to a historical hinge upon which these discourses shift. Through discourse analysis, it examines what this discursive shift entails, and how it takes place. It points to "moments of poignancy" in the construction of Cape Town's recent urban transformation. As such, this study offers a series of insights into the links between colonial modernity, on the one hand, and the origins of contemporary heritage and urban-design discourses in Cape Town, on the other. It examines the function of official discourse concerning the design of the city, as well as the sudden eruptions of public dissent that disturb this official discourse. The central argument of this thesis is that, through an in-depth understanding of the shifts, transformations and internal workings of the discourses of heritage and urban design, a critique can be made of the way contemporary Cape Town has been repositioned in relation to the city's past, present and future.

Relevant de l’histoire des mentalités, notre étude vise à cerner les croyances présentes dans les Propos de table de Martin Luther : à partir des nombreuses occurrences se rapportant au diable, aux « esprits », aux diverses créatures diaboliques, à la magie et à la sorcellerie, notre objectif a été, sous l’habillage chrétien que revêtent les récits, de reconnaître, d’identifier et de reconstituer une filiation avec des faits de croyance bien antérieurs à la Réforme. Cette confrontation des textes a permis de redécouvrir des restes de croyances ancestrales sous la forme d’entités venues de temps immémoriaux. La diabolisation systématique pratiquée par Luther n’est possible que grâce au recours à des êtres issus de la petite mythologie tels que, par exemple, les génies domestiques. En parallèle, l’analyse des manifestations de « revenants », d’« apparitions » et des esprits frappeurs ainsi que celle des actions néfastes des sorcières illustrent une certaine conception du devenir après la mort, une notion de vie post mortem et dans l’au-delà, parfois bien éloignée du dogme chrétien, ce qui permet de nuancer le portrait traditionnellement véhiculé de Luther<br>Based on a choice of texts from the Table-Talk of Martin Luther, the aim of this study is to show how certain ancestral beliefs dealing with death and with life in the other world after dying are solidly anchored in the mentalities of people and of the Reformer too, in an era in which humanist thinking prevailed and in texts under the influence of the Christianity. « Il était une fois »… un professeur autrichien, Theodor Vernaleken, qui souhaitait diffuser les récits populaires et coutumes traditionnelles des régions alpines. Ce « Grimm autrichien » les restitue si fidèlement dans ses Contes des Alpes pour les enfants et le foyer et ses Légendes des Alpes qu’il adopte la forme dialectale. Pédagogue émérite, il annote ses récits de nombreuses remarques explicatives rendant ainsi ces témoignages accessibles. Le conte est un récit se déroulant « autrefois » « dans une contrée lointaine ». Les êtres fantastiques surgissent tout naturellement au moment opportun, pour permettre ou empêcher le héros de vivre heureux et d’avoir beaucoup d’enfants. Pour sa part, la légende vise à être crue. Dans ces contes et légendes, les habitants ou un membre de la communauté villageoise ont vu de leurs propres yeux, dans leur village, des êtres surnaturels. Ils nous racontent leur étonnement, leur peur découlant de leur confrontation à cet autre monde peuplé de démons. C’est ainsi qu’apparaissent des homoncules, des géants, des dragons et autres animaux fantastiques, qui parlent, se transforment, etc. L’homme est également confronté à des protagonistes démonologiques tels que sorcières, diables et revenants. Celui qui a transgressé les interdits ne pourra échapper à son destin, tel est le message de ces récits exemplaires et instructifs. Jusqu’à présent, aucune étude exhaustive, ni classification de ce genre littéraire n’a été réalisée. Ainsi, cette étude analysera, par une approche comparative, les récits démonologiques à travers l’étude des êtres fantastiques des textes rassemblés par Theodor Vernaleken<br>“Once upon a time”… an austrian professor, Theodor Vernaleken, wanted to spread popular stories and traditional uses from the alpine areas. This “Austrian Grimm” restores them in his books Tales From the Alps for children and home and Legends from the Alps so faithfully that he writes them in dialect form. Highly skilled teacher, he writes lots of explicative notes on his stories making them understandable. A tale is a story, which takes place “a long time ago” “in a far faraway country”. Fantastic creatures appear quite naturally at the right time to allow the heroes to live happy and have lots of children or to prevent it to happen. As for it the legend aims to be believed. In these tales and legends inhabitants or a member of the village community have really seen supernatural creatures in their village. They tell us about their amazement, their fear from the confrontation with this other world populated with daemons. So dwarfs, giants, drakes and other fantastic animals and so on appear, speak and are completely transformed. Humans are also confronting demonologic protagonists such as witches, devils and ghosts. Who transgresses the interdicts cannot escape from his fate. That is the message of these exemplary and instructive stories. Up to now, no exhaustive survey or classification of this literary genre has been carried out. So, this work will analyse demonologic stories in a comparative way through the study of fantastic creatures in texts gathered by Theodor Vernaleken

Il s’agit de reprendre la question autobiographique à l’époque où le genre se constitue en Europe, au premier XIXe siècle, en déplaçant le regard vers les marges du genre. Les œuvres de Jean Paul, d’Ugo Foscolo, de Stendhal et de Gérard de Nerval sont d’abord étudiées sous l’angle de la poétique des genres dont elles déstabilisent les catégories. La thèse déplace la question générique en soulevant les enjeux éthiques et politiques du récit de soi qui sont liés à l’expérience du sujet et du temps. À côté de ce qui deviendra le canon en matière d’autobiographie se dessine une autre ligne autobiographique qui, en souvenir de Laurence Sterne, se place sous le signe de l’imagination et de l’arabesque. Les œuvres du corpus mettent en évidence la ligne de poésie de la vie et du sujet. Ces poétiques autobiographiques excentriques manifestent une dissemblance de soi, du temps et de l’histoire. Elles mettent en crise l’identité pensée comme « mêmeté » et l’idée d’un temps homogène. Le soi n’est pas un ; l’autobiographe n’est seul ni dans sa peau, ni dans sa langue, ni dans sa plume ; il se déplace entre les lieux et entre les langues, ne trouvant pas d’assise. La figure de l’auteur est plurielle et collective, en rupture avec le mythe du génie. Aux transfigurations de soi s’ajoutent les transfigurations de la mémoire qui ressaisit le passé au présent et pour l’avenir. Expérience mélancolique de revenance, le récit de soi multiplie les fantômes qui sont le signe d’un deuil personnel et des disjonctions de l’histoire. Témoignant des révolutions du siècle, l’autobiographe ouvre aussi l’histoire individuelle et collective : le récit de soi est prospectif. C’est une mémoire au futur<br>The thesis takes up the question of autobiography by focusing on works at the margins of the genre during the early 19th century, the period in which autobiographical writing in Europe came into its own. The works of Jean Paul, Ugo Foscolo, Stendhal and Gérard de Nerval destabilize established generic and canonic categories. They do so by pointing to the ethical and political issues at stake in the narration of the self, which are in turn linked to the experience of the subject and of time. The thesis thereby identifies and explores another autobiographical “line” emerging alongside canonical forms of the genre, a “line” which recalls Laurence Sterne through the use of arabesques and the reliance upon imagination in life narratives. These works emphasize the “line of poetry” which constitutes life and the subject. The poetics of these eccentric autobiographical works explores dissemblance in writing the self, time, and history. They question reductive understandings of identity as ‘sameness’ and conceptions of time as homogenous. The self is not ‘one’; the autobiographer is alone neither in his body, nor in his language, nor in the act of writing. Rather, he is in constant movement between places and languages, unable to establish a stable grounding for his narrative. The author’s persona is multiple and collective, inverting the myth of the romantic genius. Such transfigurations of the self are tied to transfigurations of memory, which allow for the past to be reenacted in the present and for the future. This melancholic experience is also one of haunting, for narratives of the self draw on the figure of the phantom as a sign of mourning for both personal and historical disjunctions. As witnesses of recent or contemporary revolutions, the autobiographers stress the incomplete nature of both individual and collective history, that is, the potential that such history contains. Cette étude prend pour son objet la figure de la revenante dans le roman québécois contemporain au féminin, laquelle émane d’une tradition de l’effacement du féminin, que ce soit sur le plan social (valorisation du sacrifice maternel et de la transcendance féminine), créatif (empêchement de la participation des femmes à la production littéraire) ou représentatif (mise en scène de la disparition de la femme). Si cet effacement a longtemps servi d’appui à une économie et à une esthétique patriarcales, la revenante attire l’attention sur celles-ci et en provoque la remise en question.
La revenante assume deux avatars dans notre corpus : l’apparition de la femme morte (en tant que fantôme, morte-vivante, figure fantasmatique ou onirique), ou le redoublement de celle-ci dans d’autres personnages féminins (c’est-à-dire que la hantée endosse les traits d’un précurseur spectral féminin). Nous nous intéressons aux enjeux de l’appropriation de ce vieux topos patriarcal dans le roman au féminin après 1980, moment où les femmes interviennent de façon régulière sur la scène littéraire. Ainsi, après avoir situé la revenante dans un contexte québécois et occidental, nous en examinons les instances dans les œuvres d’Anne Hébert, de Suzanne Jacob, d’Élise Turcotte et de Ying Chen.
Puisque la revenante est une figure déterminante dans l’œuvre d’Anne Hébert, les deux premiers chapitres d’analyse traitent de textes de cette auteure canonique. « Désir et dés/ordre » identifie les lieux et les origines de la hantise féminine et le désordre qu’elle provoque pour mettre en évidence son rapport au désir; « La pro/création » examine la création artistique ou reproductrice comme médium de la spectralité au féminin. Le dernier chapitre, « Violence et vulnérabilité », présente des analyses de romans de Suzanne Jacob, d’Élise Turcotte et de Ying Chen afin d’y souligner la représentation des deux faces de la violence – l’agression et la vulnérabilité – telles qu’elles se chevauchent avec la revenance. The master's thesis deals with one of the specifics of the cultural history of the Czech lands in the Early Modern period - i. e. the general perception of the afterlife (approximately between 1500 and 1800) and revenant issues. A revenant is meant originally a human being, who, after his death, for various reasons returns to the light of the living world, with exhibits of material (revived corpses, zombies, vampires, fexts) and immaterial (spirits, white ladies, wild hunting). In this respect, the main source are Czech demonological legends. One part of the study is to evaluate the social, religious and cultural aspects that had effect on what was said above in the specific historical period. The main emphasis is placed on the individual cases of revenants in the Czech lands, preserved in historical sources, as well as comparison with the same case in other European countries. The study will also focus on the description of biographies of historical personalities, drawing conclusions about what may have caused the conviction of being revenant.
