This prologue describes Chicago's black gambling world and three of its leading figures, focusing on major developments in 1903. It begins with a look at John “Mushmouth” Johnson, who operated a saloon and gambling den at 464 South State Street. Since around 1900, Johnson's most profitable operation had been the game of policy. Johnson wove a dense and seemingly impermeable tapestry of gambling, politics, protection, and graft. Each of Johnson's successive gambling houses catered to an interracial clientele—whites, blacks, and Asians. The discussion then turns to black gambler John Weston “Pon

A detailed exploration of a critical month-long battle, which set the stage for German strategic-level defeats on both the Eastern and Western fronts. In February 1944, 1st Panzer Army (under Generaloberst Hube) played a major role in the relief operation that saved part of the German forces trapped in the Korsun Pocket. However, the losses suffered in that effort left Hube’s forces materially weakened, exhausted and with vulnerable flanks. Unexpectedly, Zhukov’s 1st Ukrainian Front and Konev’s 2nd Ukrainian Front attacked on 4 March, conducting a huge pincer operation against 1st Panzer Army.

By the mid-1950s, a linear accelerator suitable for treating deep-seated tumors was built in the Stanford Microwave Laboratory and installed at Stanford Hospital. It served as a prototype for commercial units that were built later. Since that time, medical linear accelerators gained in popularity as major radiation therapy devices, but few basic training materials on their operation had been produced for use by medical professionals. C.J. Karzmark, a radiological physicist at Stanford University, was involved with medical linacs since their development, and he agreed to collaborate with Robert

This chapter notes that the ultimate concern of variationist sociolinguistics is the evolution of linguistic systems and the mechanisms which operate on them. One feature that offers particularly good insight into these issues is the quotative be like, a relatively recent and robust change that has affected varieties of English worldwide. The chapter illustrates the types of theoretical issues that be like has been used to explore, beginning with the quantitative paradigm and the analytical assumptions underlying variationist work on direct quotation. It argues that what makes be like such a u

A large conference on nuclear physics was held in London and Cambridge from October 1–6, 1934. Six German refugee physicists were present, but Werner Heisenberg was not. Czech theoretical physicists Guido Beck and Kurt Sitte had proposed a theory of beta decay that challenged Fermi’s, which Beck presented but apparently gained no support for. On October 22, Fermi serendipitously discovered the efficaciousness of slow neutrons in producing nuclear reactions. Niels Bohr would be the greatest beneficiary of Fermi’s discovery. Robert Bárány developed an extensive battery of clinical tests of the vestibular system, most of which he outlined in his 1907 book on the physiology and pathology of the vestibular system. The basic concepts of his examination were to use the oculomotor responses (nystagmus) and postural responses (balance and past-pointing) to determine the functional status of the inner ear. Most of his work on the vestibular system was published in Vienna prior to his move to Uppsala, Sweden, after World War I. This chapter argues that rear-screen projection in Edgar Ulmer's Detour (1945) is just as critical to the film's audiovisual economy as voiceover and flashback. Not unlike the radiophonic “theater of the mind” projected by the 1940s noir sound track, rear-screen projection acts as a secondary screen for the protagonist's psyche. In Detour, this oneiric screen, in addition to mobilizing two of the dominant affective modalities of classic noir—claustrophobia and phantasmagoria—operates as a temporal signpost. The result is that even as Al Roberts (Tom Neal), driven by the romance of the open roa
