Abstract:
The vivid survival of traditional features in Arcadian religion under the early Roman Empire is striking. Despite the brutal conquest of Rome and the intrusiveness of its administration, cities were able to keep their most peculiar religious characteristics alive. This chapter investigates this seemingly uninterrupted religious continuity despite remarkable political change. In line with the studies of Alcock and more recently Spawforth, it aims to show that the attitude of Rome towards Hellenism, and in particular the antiquarian attitude to religion it promoted, triggered a cascade of change

Abstract:
This edition of St. Augustine's The City of God (De Civitate Dei) is the only one in English to provide a text and translation as well as a detailed commentary of this most influential document in the history of western Christianity. In these books, written in the aftermath of the sack of Rome in AD 410 by the Goths, Augustine replies to the pagans, who attributed the fall of Rome to the Christian religion and its prohibition of the worship of the pagan gods. Books VI and VII focus on the figure of Terentius Varro, a man revered by Augustine's pagan contemporaries. By exploiting Varro's learne

Abstract:
Abstract The Roman Empire’s approach to religion has traditionally been described in ambiguous terms. On the one hand, Rome has often been regarded as almost proverbially tolerant, as well as highly flexible in its dealings with the diverse range of religious cults and practices within its territories. On the other hand, the Roman religious landscape was not without its limits, and there were certain groups who found themselves, for one reason or another, on the outside. Within scholarship, however, the legal interactions between such groups and the Roman authorities have widely been studied i

Abstract:
Inspiring reverence and blasphemy, combining paternal benignity with sexual violence, transcendent universality with tribal chauvinism, Jupiter represents both the best and the worst of ancient religion. Though often assimilated to Zeus, Jupiter differs from his Greek counterpart as much as Rome differs from Greece; “the god of Rome” conveys both Jupiter’s sovereignty over Rome and his symbolic encapsulation of what Rome represents. Understanding this dizzyingly complex figure is crucial not only to the study of Roman religion, but to the whole of literary, intellectual, and religious history.
