Abstract: This article reconstructs the historical narrative underlying the account of Roman farming in De re rustica, thereby shedding new light on Varro's intellectual engagements in composing his agricultural treatise and methodology as a scholar of Rome. Central to this account is Dicaearchus of Messana's three-stage theory of human development, which not only provides an anthropological pedigree for agriculture (in book 1) and animal husbandry (in book 2), but also establishes the theoretical framework for Varro's innovative treatment of so-called ‘animal husbandry of the villa’ (in book

Suppression of weed is important due to its huge competitory impact on the commercial crops. The nutrient recycling is also important becuase it reduces usage of fertilizers on low technological agriculture. The soil coverage is important to prevent the erosion and reduce the nutrient leaching. All those positive effects can be influenced by type of cultivated species on the intercropping con

This thesis looks at the interplay of nomadism and settlement in two different periods of history. In the first two chapters I develop a theory for the Neolithic Revolution, the transition form nomadic hunting and gathering to settled agriculture. I argue that an exogenous increase in climate seasonality made our ancestors become sedentary in order to store food. Once sedentary, inventing agriculture was only a matter of time. In the first chapter I construct a model encapsulating this intuition, and in the second I test empirically the predictions of the model. In the third chapter, I instead
