Abstract:
Gravitational microlensing may be used to probe distant stars for planetary companions. The presence of a planet in the vicinity of a star acting as the lens may cause a short lived anomaly in the observed lightcurve of the lensing event. By quantifying these anomalies we may place limits on the mass of the companion relative to the lens as well as the position of the planet relative to the primary lens. The detection probability is proportional to mp, where mp is the planet mass. All current follow-up teams use dedicated observations on a preselected sample of mainly high-amplification events

These two planets orbit very bright stars in the northern hemisphere and have lead to a wealth of discoveries thanks to the relative ease with which they can be studied. Abstract:
Investigations were made into the trapping biology of the pitchers of Nepenthes rafflesiana (Jack), Family Nepenthaceae, in Brunei, Borneo. The plant produces two distinct pitcher forms, upper and lower, which were found to differ in their prey spectra. Although ants were the most important prey in both forms, the upper form caught more anthophilous insects than the lower. High contrast U/V patterns on the upper pitchers were found to contribute to the attraction of some anthophilous insects, as was the fragrance of upper pitcher fluid. Increased height above ground was also found to increase

Thesis (MSc)--Stellenbosch University, 2002.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT:Several authors regard the subdivision of the large genus Heliophila as unsatisfactory and in need of a detailed taxonomic study. Previous studies on this genus were based exclusively on gross external morphological characters. The present study investigates patterns of variation in Heliophila in order to identify taxonomically informative characters that could be used in the subdivision of this large genus. The study differs from previous studies in Heliophila because, in addition to macro-morphology, it employs micro- morp

Abstract:
The discovery of sulphur-deficient agricultural soils has focussed concern on the dynamics of sulphur transformations in soils and on the important role of the soil microbial population in mineralising organic sulphur to forms more available to plants. This thesis reports a study carried out to investigate the dynamics of supply of plant available sulphur from soils and includes development of a method for determination of microbial biomass S, comparison of a perfusion system with a plant bioassay to assess soil S-supply, characterisation of a fertilizer S budget for a crop-soil system and ass
