Abstract:
Large fires that produce plumes of smoke and other contaminants can cause harm to both people and the environment. To support UK emergency responders, the Met Office Environmental Monitoring and Response Centre (EMARC) provides dedicated weather advice and forecasts of the plume in the form of CHEmical METeorological (CHEMET) reports. The plume’s expected location, extent and relative air concentrations of pollutants are predicted using the Numerical Atmospheric-dispersion Modelling Environment (NAME), which simulates the transport and dispersion of pollutants using numerical weather predictio

The Cognitive Information Processing (CIP) theory of career problem-solving and decision-making, introduced over 30 years ago (Peterson et al., 1991), builds on the foundational work of Parsons (1909) and Janis and Mann (1977), as well as cognitive information processing theories from Hunt (1971) and Sternberg (1980). To maintain consistency and to prevent theoretical drift, the original authors have made minimal changes to the core concepts throughout the years (see Sampson et al., 2023). However, we believe that for theories to remain valid and viable, it is essential to embrace changing emp

Abstract:
This report analyzes the possible evolution of the hydrogen transport infrastructure system in the Basque Country in the medium term. The objective of the work is threefold: (1) to characterize medium-term infrastructure development scenarios (over a 10-15 year horizon); (2) to identify key factors that influence the development of the Basque hydrogen system and analyze their potential impact on the determination of the medium-term scenario; (3) to draw conclusions of a strategic nature for the Basque Country. The hydrogen production-transport system scenarios analyzed range from a totally dec

This issue of Frontiers of CLTS explores current thinking and practice on the topic of tackling slippage of open defecation free (ODF) status. It looks at how slippage is defined and identified, and at different patterns of slippage that are seen after ODF is declared. Although a considerable amount has been written on how to establish strong Community-Led Total sanitation (CLTS) programmes that prevent slippage from happening, this issue looks at how to reverse slippage that has already taken place. Note however, that at a certain level, strategies used to reverse slippage and those used in a

The long-term goals of our research are to understand the regulation of sclerotial development and pathogenicity in S. sclerotiorum. The focus in this project is on the elucidation of the signaling events and environmental cues involved in the regulation of these processes, utilizing and continuously developing tools our research groups have established and/or adapted for analysis of S. sclerotiorum. Our stated specific objectives were to: 1. Follow activities and function of S. sclerotiorumPKA. 2. Identify and functionally evaluate effectors of the S. sclerotiorumERK-likeMAPK signaling pathwa

Earth system observations, science, and services (OSS) inform and guide the activities of virtually every economic sector and innumerable institutions underlying modern civilization. OSS are a fundamental component of efforts to meet basic human needs including food, shelter, energy, health and safety. At the same time, opportunities to enhance the societal benefits of OSS are vast and increasing. Better understanding of the weather, water, and climate (WWC) enterprise’s value could: create new opportunities to apply OSS for societal benefit; help justify public investments in OSS; and guide f

Coastal areas share unique intersections of large-scale climate variability and local hydrology, wetland, benthic and pelagic ecosystems, and anthropogenic pressures. Forecasting of harmful environmental conditions for planning, adaptation, and mitigation purposes is both complex and urgently needed. Ecological forecasting is the qualitative or quantitative projection of biogeochemical, organismal or ecosystem state variables and their drivers on timescales that can range from “now” to decades from now. Overview Skin cancer prevention is a component of the new Cancer Plan 2022–27, which guides the work of the Cancer Institute NSW. To lessen the impact of skin cancer on the community, the Cancer Institute NSW works closely with the NSW Skin Cancer Prevention Advisory Committee, comprising governmental and non-governmental organisation representatives, to develop and implement the NSW Skin Cancer Prevention Strategy. Primary Health Networks and primary care providers are seen as important stakeholders in this work. To guide improvements in skin cancer prevention and inform the development of th
