Osteoporosis is a “silent” condition that happens slowly over years. The rate of bone loss (“resorption”) exceeds the rate of new bone formation (“acretion”). Many times neither a person nor a doctor is aware of weakened bones until one breaks unexpectedly. Originally published: 2000

Abstract:
The determination of the human or non-human origin of skeletal material can be particularly difficult if the bone is fragmented. It has been suggested that differences in the thickness of the cortical bone between human and non-human mammal long bones may be used to distinguish them, though little clear data exist. The aim of this thesis was to determine the extent of such difference, and whether it could be used to identify fragments of bone shafts. Potential differences in cortical bone thickness were investigated by comparing adult human limb bones (humerus, radius, femur and tibia) w

Several hundred inherited disorders of the skeleton have been delineated. Individually these conditions are rare, but as a group they cause much crippling and hardship. Several factors, including the rarity and complexity of the manifestations of these conditions, as well as semantic overlap, impede the accurate diagnosis which is essential for effective treatment. In this regard, the adoption of microcomputers warrants evaluation as a high technology aid. Microcomputers have developed tremendous capabilities during recent years. The present study evaluates two fetal individuals (B532 and B625) from the Kellis 2 cemetery (Roman period circa A.D. 50 A.D. 450), Dakhleh Oasis, Egypt, that display skeletal anomalies that may explain their death. Both individuals exhibit bowing of the long bones in addition to other skeletal deformities unique to each individual. To assess these pathologies a differential diagnosis based on the congenital occurrence of long bone bowing is developed. Long bone bowing is selected because it is the more prevalent abnormality in the paleopathological literature and the other abnormalities are

Statistical analyses of measurements were used to evaluate congenital asymmetry and activity-related change in 100 pairs of humeri and 112 pairs of femora. Bone pairs in samples from the Nary Rose and an earlier medieval site in Norwich were subdivided into age categories and their archaeological groups for analysis. Internal bone dimensions were determined from radiographs and compared with those of a modern group of divers. Muscle insertions were ranked and femoral morphological traits were recorded. Differences were tested at the p<0.05 level of confidence. Congenital asymmetry was accepted

Though other factors affect the shape of bone (e.g., genetics, hormones, blood supply), the skeleton adapts its shape mainly in response to the mechanical environment to which it is exposed throughout life. The specific relationship between the mechanical environment and the mechanical adaptation response of the skeleton is reviewed. One of the first concerns for forensic anthropologists in dealing with skeletal remains in the Australian context is the determination of whether the remains are of anthropological, historical or archaeological interest. If fewer than 75 years have elapsed since death, remains are classified as anthropological and of forensic interest. However, an accurate and reliable method for estimating time since death (TSD) from human skeletal remains has thus far eluded forensic anthropologists. Bone age assessment is a method of assigning a level of biological maturity to a child. It is usually performed either by comparing an x-ray of a child's left hand and wrist with an atlas of known bones, or by analysing specific features of bones such as ratios of width to height, or the degree of overlap with other bones. Both methods of assessment are labour intensive and prone to both inter- and intra-observer variability. This is motivation for developing a computerised method of bone age assessment. Abstract:
Sex estimation in bioarchaeological research is paramount for comparative analyses of skeletal remains and developing estimates of other demographic variables. Frequently, sex is estimated utilizing the morphology of pelvic and cranial bones in archaeological skeletal samples. Regrettably, these bones are often damaged, destroyed, or lost and cannot be employed for the estimation of sex.
