This paper examines the role of collaboration in inquiry-based project work in early childhood education in Aotearoa New Zealand. It draws upon findings from a research project exploring how inquiry-based project learning has been interpreted and undertaken in early childhood settings in this context. Inquiry-based project learning is a collaborative approach, underpinned by sociocultural theories, that supports a democratic view. The study is positioned in an interpretivist qualitative paradigm and is informed by sociocultural theories. A narrative inquiry approach informed the study design.

Researchers speak about the formation of the postmodernism paradigm of subculture and the virtualisation of sociocultural phenomena. The subcultural subject and the power that formed it continue to exist in the new realities, but are undergoing a transformation. Changes having occured to the public sphere were especially significant for a subcultural entity since it is the public sphere where a subcultural entity can present itself to authorities, thereby maintaining its social subsistence. Traditional approaches to cultural literacy have always emphasised the importance of a shared (national) imagined community, achieved through engagement with traditional media and the cultural canon. This approach has often been based on problematising the growing deficit of cultural knowledge and has stressed the importance of this deficit at both individual and societal levels. Transformations in contemporary society challenge us to rethink what can or should be considered relevant or valuable knowledge about culture and the arts. Education systems globally are implementing competency-based education (CBE) reforms. Vietnam's leaders have also adopted CBE in a comprehensive reform of its education since the early 2010s. Although the global idea of CBE has been widely adopted and recontextualized in various educational contexts, implementing the reform at the local level (e.g., teachers in schools) is never a linear and simple process. Given the complicated sensemaking process of competency and competency teaching, this study explores how Vietnamese teachers made sense of key competencies and adapted their teaching to com
