Abstract:
Experimental data are reported for solids suspension and distribution in four geometrically similar vessels with diameters equal to 0.31, 0.61, 1.83 and 2.67 m. Agitation was provided by a series of pitched blade turbines with impeller to vessel diameter ratios from 0.3 to 0.6 and pitched angles between 30° and 90°. The effect of impeller clearance on solids suspension was examined for a clearance range of T/4 to T/8. Dual impeller systems were also studied, covering two combinations (dual pitched and flat/pitched) and impeller spacing of half to two diameters apart. The majority of the experi

A suspension flow model based on the "suspension balance" approach has been developed. This work modifies the model to allow the solution of suspension flows under general flow conditions. This requires the development of a frame-invariant constitutive model for the particle stress which can take into account the spatially-varying local kinematic conditions. The mass and momentum balances for the bulk suspension and particle phase are solved numerically using a finite volume method. The particle stress is based upon the computed rate of strain and the local kinematic conditions. A nonlocal str

One-, two- and three-phase mixing systems have been extensively studied. The experiments were performed in a range of standard (baffled) vessel geometries of diameter varying between 0.22 - 1.83 m. Rushton disc turbines and mixed flow impellers (both pumping directions) were fully investigated. Water and glucose solution (~ - 120 mPas) were employed. For single phase systems, the work has shown that the power number of disc turbines depends on disc thickness and scale of vessel. For the mixed flow agitators the power number is dependent upon the blade thickness and (D/T) ratio. Correlations en

Using shaken microwell and stirred miniature bioreactors in early stage bioprocess development requires understanding such devices from an engineering perspective. One particular area which has not to this date been fully explored is the suspension of solid particles in multi-phase operations in such devices. In order to broaden our understanding of this phenomena, a novel correlation is described for predicting the minimum shaking frequency required to suspend at least 90% of solid particles (0.81 gml−1 < ρp < 1.33 gml−1) present in a bioprocess involving shaken microwell operations.
