Abstract Tapioca industrial solid waste is a very abundant and high cellulose content that makes solid waste from tapioca industrial an alternative material substituted to coal. The low-calorie value of solid waste is around 2783 Kcal/kg, which requires an effort to increase calorie value—increasing the calorie value of solid waste by carbonization in the pyrolysis furnace. The study of solid waste with pyrolysis to replace coal and improve the calorie value similar to commercial coal needs to be done. Abstract:
The viability of Mechanical Biological Treatments (MBT) is a widely discussed topic regarding Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) management in the world. Bio-drying is a MBT process that shows its best performances when the waste has a high moisture content. The purpose of bio-drying is the exploitation of the exothermic bacterial reactions for the evaporation of the highest part of the moisture in the waste with the lowest conversion of organic matter. As side effects the waste stream increases its calorific value and its composition is partially stabilized. This paper presents a simple model based

Abstract Mechanical and Biological Treatment units (MBT), are a key element in the management of municipal solid waste as they are the preferred route for minimization of the amount of waste delivered to landfills. However, taking into account the waste received by the MBT’s, it is observed that a significant part is sent to controlled landfills without any kind of valorization. Within this framework, a characterization of the rejected waste produced in one of these facilities was carried out in order to assess their potential for energy recovery. The rejected waste is composed by different fr

Abstract:
The Bingham Canyon Mine, located near Salt Lake City, Utah, is surrounded by more than 6 billion tons of waste rock developed over the open cut mining history from 1903 to present; the surface area of the waste rock is approximately 5000 acres. Waste rock dumps have a thickness of more than 1 200 feet from crest to toe. From 1930 to 2000, selected portions of the waste rock dumps were commercially leached using a ferric-sulfate-based lixiviant to extract copper, whereas other portions have only received meteoric leaching. From 2011 to present, Rio Tinto Kennecott has studied the evolution and

Take a look at the garbage bin in your school or home. Have you ever wondered what makes its content garbage? If you look inside, you may see that the waste at the bottom of the bin is made up of items that are no longer of use and therefore have been tossed out. You may also find materials that are of mixed composition (made of glass, paper, metal, organics, and the like). Breathe in deeply, and you may notice an unpleasant odor. This is a sample of our consumption. We disregard the origin and history of these items, their ultimate destiny, and the consequence of their disposal for the enviro

A great deal of energy can be sourced both directly and indirectly from waste. For example, municipal waste with an energy content of around 60 petajoules is incinerated in Switzerland every year. The energy recovered directly from this waste covers around 4 % of the Swiss energy demand. However, the greatest potential offered by waste management lies in the recovery of secondary raw materials during the recycling process, thus indirectly avoiding the energy-intensive production of primary raw materials. In order to optimise the contribution to the energy turnaround made by waste management, a

During the granting period, we performed the following projects: Firstly, we differentially measured glucan content in several pleurotus mushroom strains. Mushroom polysaccharides are edible polymers that have numerous reported biological functions; the most common effects are attributed to β-glucans. In recent years, it became apparent that the less abundant α-glucans also possess potent effects in various health conditions. In our first study, we explored several Pleurotus species for their total, β and α-glucan content. Pleurotuseryngii was found to have the highest total glucan concentrati
