Abstract:
A persistent element of the Principles & Parameters framework is the T-model of grammar. The strong claim of this model is that phonological rules cannot refer to semantic entities, and vice versa. However, apparent interactions between prosody and semantic interpretation provide a <i>prima facie</i> challenge to this model. I propose a theory of Information Structure (IS) and its related interfaces that is sufficient to account for apparent semantic-prosodic interactions while still satisfying the strong requirements of the T-model. This proposal hinges on three inter-connected sub-propos

I present experimental evidence regarding the acquisition of phonemic contrasts, and preliminary findings regarding the acquisition of phonological features. Abstract:
Recent research within the Music Information Retrieval (MIR) field has shown the relevance of perceptual features for musical signals. The idea is to identify a small set of features that are natural descriptions from a perceptual perspective. The notion of perceptual features is based on the ecological approach to music, that is, focussing on sound events rather than spectral information. Furthermore, MIR research has had an overemphasis on Western music and listeners. This leads to the question of whether the concept of perceptual features is culturally independent or not. This was investiga

Abstract:
As with any sensory input, music might be expected to incorporate the processing of information about the safety of the environment. Little research has been done on how such processing has evolved and how different kinds of sounds may affect the experience of certain environments. In this article, we investigate if music, as a form of auditory information, can trigger the experience of safety. We hypothesized that (1) there should be an optimal, subjectively preferred degree of information density of musical sounds, at which safety-related information can be processed optimally; (2) any devia

Abstract:
Navigation systems are commonly used in our daily lives. Research has shown that spatial audio presents one opportunity for more effectively communicating to the driver the direction of the next manoeuvre. This thesis project proposes a new feature for the spatialisation of the audio cues triggered by a mobile navigation system by using a virtualised vector-based panning (VVBP) architecture for the encoding and decoding. The prototype developed during this thesis enables the spatialisation using headphones- or speakers- based systems. This study aims to promote a new sound experience to the us

Abstract:
Sonic Interaction is an area of Interaction Design which has the focus on the sound related interactive system designs. This area of interaction design has not been researched as much as visual interactive systems and because of this, sonic interactive systems are not as much developed and enhanced; This study tries to examine the possibility of improving and enhancing the sonic interactive systems by combining Embodied interaction with Sonic interaction. The main concern of this study is to combine the user’s head movements in a manner of embodiment with sonic interactive systems and explore

This project is based upon two previous projects handed to the author by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in co-operation with Disruptive Technologies.   The report discusses sound sensing and Neural Networks, and their application in IoT. The goal was to determine what type of Neural Networks or classification methods was most suited for audio classification. This was done by applying various classification methods and Neural Networks on a data set consisting of 8732 sound samples. These methods where logistic regression, Feed-Forward Neural Network, Convolutional Neural Net
