Abstract:
External reproductive organs of spiders are often species-specific and are important taxonomic characters in species identification. One explanation of this phenomenon, the mechanical isolation hypothesis was tested in two Nuctenea (Araneidae) species. According to this hypothesis, a lock-and-key isolating mechanism should lead to character displacement (mechanical, ecological, or behavioral) between sympatric species with similar genitalia in order to prevent costly interspecific copulation attempts. Homologous external genitalia of male and female Nuctenea sclopetaria and N. patagiata were

Background : Old fields are abandoned agricultural areas that are undergoing secondary succession. A variety of factors influence the assembly, invasibility, and species turnover during secondary succession in old fields. Abstract:
A major question in ecology is 'why are tropical forests so species diverse?' One hypothesis to explain tropical species diversity is the Janzen-Connell hypothesis. This model assumes high levels of host-specific seed and seedling predation and / or pathogen attack when seedlings occur at high density near to the parent tree; seedlings are more likey to survive and reach maturity the further they are away from parents / conspecific adults. Theoretically this should lead to a random distribution of each species in the forest, which in turn will lead to high species diversity. Here I test

Abstract:
One theory concerning the invasiveness of exotic plants suggests that they exude allelopathic compounds that are novel in areas being invaded. Here, I tested for allelopathic effects of root exudates of the invasive plant Heracleum mantegazzianum (giant hogweed) in a series of experiments both in vitro and in the garden, and compared them with effects of its native congener H. sphondylium (common hogweed) and two less related native species. Moreover, I addressed intraspecific variability of allelopathy by comparing effects of 41 different maternal lines of H. mantegazzianum sampled from sever

However, recent studies have started to focus on the maintenance of urban BSR in the face of increasing human population and expanding cities, and have proposed hypotheses that could lead to an increase in BSR. Cities are typically located near large water bodies. Urban riparian zone is the hotspot of BSR. Compared with urban green spaces, riparian zones have contiguous and larger areas. Through the endeavor to redefine Israelite identity during the Neo-Babylonian Empire of 626–539 BCE and the Achaemenid Persian Empire of 550–330 BCE, various ideologies of Israelite identity were produced by various religious, literate and elite groups. Possibly, the Holiness Code functions as the compromise reached between two such groups, these being: the
