The feasibility of employing a portable variable filter array (VFA) infrared spectrometer equipped with a transmission flow cell to quantitatively analyze edible oils for free fatty acids (FFA) was evaluated. This thesis presents spectroscopic observations of z ≥ 7 galaxy candidates in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field, which were selected with HST WFC3 imaging, using the Lyman-Break technique. Four z-band (z ≈ 7) dropout galaxies were targeted with Gemini/GNIRS, one z-band dropout galaxy and three Y -band (z ≈ 8 − 9) dropout galaxies with VLT/XSHOOTER, and 22 z-band dropouts with VLT/FORS2, where 15 of the latter are strong candidates. Long-term observation campaigns have been conducted on each star, with over 300 spectra of each star being gathered for analysis using the HERCULES spectrograph at Mount John University Observatory. Spectral data in the wavelength range of 400-1750 nm were used to develop quality prediction models. Dwarf novae are a type of cataclysmic variable in which one of the components is a white dwarf. Their outbursts can range in brightness from two to five magnitudes at intervals that can vary from days to decades. The purpose of this study is to analyze the outburst of SS Cygni on the nights of June 18-22, 1987.
