Purpose We sought to estimate the prevalence of isolated epileptiform activity (IEA) in children with speech and language impairments and discuss the utility of an electroencephalogram (EEG) in assessing these children. Method We conducted a systematic review and searched for eligible studies in 8 databases. All languages were included, and meta-analyses were performed. Results We found 55 prevalence estimates (8 with control group). The odds of having IEA were 6 times greater for children with speech and language impairments than for typically developing children. Variables were tested with chi-square analysis for their statistical relationship to improvements in speech and language. For parents of children with speech-language impairments, the assumption that their children will become literate is a natural, but not always fulfilled, expectation. This study explored the literacy experiences reported to be available in the homes of three groups of preschool children. Surveys were sent to the families of children aged 3 to 5 years who had (a) a speech-language impairment, (b) a disability other than speech-language impairment, and (c) no disability or delay. Respondents described the literacy-related materials and activities that were made available to the children at home.

Primary speech and language impairment (PSLI) is a term used to describe children with a range of significant speech and language impairments, in the context of normal cognitive abilities. Narrative inquiry was used to conduct this study. The participants were 11 children aged 9-12 years-old, presenting with PSLI. Each child was taught the meaning and use of six nonsense verbs. AbstractThere is a multi-directional relationship between communication difficulties and mental health. A young person with a language disorder may fall behind at school, have difficulty maintaining appropriate peer relationships and have trouble expressing their internal experience. This can result in adverse mental health outcomes. Conversely, a mental health condition which leads to a young person not attending school and withdrawing from family and friends alters the environmental input they receive in terms of speech, language and social communication; they may therefore fall behind in th

Despite the rich literature on assistive technologies in this space, there remains a gap for a solution that neither requires external infrastructure in the environment, battery-powered sensors on skin or body-worn manual input devices.
