Abstract:
Abstract Understanding spheroidal graphite growth in cast irons is a long standing problem for which several mechanisms have been proposed. During the last decade, observations using transmission electron microscopy added new information about the stacking of graphite layers, leading eventually to propose other mechanisms than previously thought of such as repeated 2D-nucleation of new growth blocks and their lateral extension at the surface of the spheroids. Furthermore, it has been recently realized that elements known to strongly affect graphite shape are also those that are surface active.

Abstract Ferritic spheroidal graphite cast iron (SGI) materials have a remarkable technical potential and economic impact in modern industry. These features are closely related to the question of how the cast materials can be produced without structural defects and graphite degenerations such as, for example, chunky graphite. Although the chunky graphite degeneration superficially seems to be well known, its metallurgical background is still controversially discussed, appropriate field-tested nondestructive tools for its quantification in castings are lacking, and the knowledge on its impact o

Abstract:
Cell death in the nervous system may occur via different mechanisms that eventually lead to irreversible membrane permeabilization and cell fragmentation. The two morphological correlates are apoptosis and necrosis, which frequently coexist with each other. The main triggers of neuronal cell death are accumulation of misfolded proteins, oxidative stress, DNA damage, energy failure, excitotoxicity injury, and activation of cell death cascades by products of inflammation. Mitochondria have a central role in several mechanisms of cell death, including intrinsic apoptosis, permeability transition-
