Methods: Among 86 patients with ankle instability, 45 patients had mechanical laxity (mean age 27.2 ± 7.0 years) and 41 had recurrent ankle sprain (mean age 25.1 ± 9.2 years). Both the affected and unaffected ankles of each patient were evalu- ated. Proprioception and neuromuscular control tests were conducted using an isokinetic machine, and postural stability was tested using a postural stabilometry system.

Medial column (deltoid ligament) integrity is of key importance when considering the stability of isolated lateral malleolus ankle fractures. Weight-bearing radiographs are the best method of evaluating stability of isolated distal fibula fractures. Computed tomography (CT) scanning is mandatory for the assessment of complex ankle fractures, especially those involving the posterior malleolus. Most isolated trans-syndesmotic fibular fractures (Weber-B, SER, AO 44-B) are stable and can safely be treated non-operatively. Previous clinical and biomechanical studies have suggested that the length of the residual portion of the distal part of the fibula has an important effect on the long-term stability of the ankle joint. Methods: Using six normal fresh-frozen cadaver legs, motions of the tibia, talus and calcaneus were measured. A reliable approach is a reconstruction technique using an allograft and 2 fibular tunnels. A recently introduced approach that entails 1–fibular tunnel reconstruction might reduce the risk of intraoperative complications and ultimately improve patient outcome. Hypothesis: We hypothesized that both reconstruction techniques show similar ankle stability (joint laxity and stiffness) and are similar to the intact joint condition. Abstract Isolated lateral malleolar supination-external rotation (SER) -type ankle fractures without incongruity on the standard radiographs can be either stable or unstable depending on the status of the deep deltoid ligament. Neither clinical signs of injury on the medial aspect of the ankle nor the displacement of fibular fracture on mortise radiographs seem to predict stability. Therefore, stress testing has been adopted in clinical use. No “gold standard” method exists but the manual external rotation (ER) stress test is the most extensively studied. Maintaining compression at the site of fracture can benefit healing by maintaining bone congruency and increasing the stability of the bone-implant construct to prevent excessive shifting. AbstractVehicle sideslip angle has always been of interest for stability controls enhancing vehicle safety. As well-known, measuring sideslip is impractical and expensive, motivating techniques to estimate it using already-available vehicle sensors. This paper proposes a new methodology to estimate sideslip angle, separating kinematic and dynamic sideslip angle contributions with the idea that the former is straightforward and the latter may be obtained with a lateral-acceleration-based interpolation. The proposed approach is validated through experimental data on a passenger vehicle.

In this paper we explore methods to achieve actively powered walking on level ground using a simple 2D walker model. The walker is activated either by applying equal joint torques at hip and ankle, or by an impulse applied at toe-off immediately before heel-strike, or by the combination of both. We show that activating the walker by equal joint torques at hip and ankle on level ground is equivalent to the dynamics of the passive walker on a downhill slope. We calculate the stability of the gait cycle by an analytical approximation to the Jacobian of the walking map. Results indicate that short

Hynd, David, Caroline Wallbank, Jonathan Kent, et al. Costs and Benefits of Electronic Stability Control in Selected G20 Countries. TRL, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.58446/lsrg3377.

Abstract:
This report, commissioned by Bloomberg Philanthropies, finds that 42,000 lives could be saved and 150,000 serious injuries prevented by 2030 if all new cars in seven G20 countries were required to be equipped with an inexpensive crash avoidance technology starting in 2020. Thirteen G20 counties currently adhere to United Nations regulations on electronic stability control (ESC). If the seven remaining countries—Argentina, Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Mexico and South Africa—also mandated ESC in 2020, the report estimates $21.5 billion in economic benefit to those countries from the prevent

BUCKLING BEHAVIOR OF A WHEEL COUPLER HIGH-FORMWORK SUPPORT SYSTEM BASED ON SEMI-RIGID CONNECTION JOINTS. The Hong Kong Institute of Steel Construction, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.18057/ijasc.2022.18.1.1.

Full text
Abstract:
To clarify the buckling behavior of a wheel coupler high-formwork support system with a diagonal bracing, the positive and negative bending behaviors of the connection joints of the support were systematically studied through experiments. Through a parametric analysis and a finite element analysis, a precise numerical model of the connection joints of the wheel coupler was established and verified. Based on the characteristics of the semi-rigid connections, the buckling behavior of the overall structure was analyzed. The results showed that the failure modes in the positive direction were corr

Event-Triggered Adaptive Robust Control for Lateral Stability of Steer-by-Wire Vehicles with Abrupt Nonlinear Faults. SAE International, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.4271/2022-01-5056.

Abstract:
Because autonomous vehicles (AVs) equipped with active front steering have the features of time varying, uncertainties, high rate of fault, and high burden on the in-vehicle networks, this article studies the adaptive robust control problem for improving lateral stability in steer-by-wire (SBW) vehicles in the presence of abrupt nonlinear faults. First, an upper-level robust H∞ controller is designed to obtain the desired front-wheel steering angle for driving both the yaw rate and the sideslip angle to reach their correct values. RESEARCH ON CALCULATION METHOD OF LOADED COMPRESSION MEMBER OF SINGLE-LIMB FIRE-CURVED EQUILATERAL DOUBLE SPLICING T-SHAPED ANGLE STEEL. The Hong Kong Institute of Steel Construction, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.18057/icass2020.p.225.

Full text
Abstract:
In this paper, loaded compression member of single-limb fire-curved equilateral double splicing T-shaped angle steel is compared with the calculation value of the bearing capacity of ordinary double-angle steel members in relevant domestic and foreign codes. When the slenderness ratio of members is large, the value obtained according to the steel structure design standard (GB 50017-2017) is closer to the test result. Based on the steel structure design standard (GB 50017-2017), the stability calculation method of axial compression members is presented in this paper. And based on the results of

PROPOSAL FOR ENHANCING THE STRUCTURAL DESIGN OF DOUBLE-SKIN TRUSS-REINFORCED COMPOSITE SHEAR WALL. The Hong Kong Institute of Steel Construction, 2025. https://doi.org/10.18057/ijasc.2025.21.2.3.

Abstract:
The double-skin truss-reinforced composite shear wall is a type of composite wall with steel plates connected by truss connectors. Established studies have demonstrated the improvement of compressive and shear performance of double steel plate composite shear walls by truss connectors. The structural design of truss connectors is discussed in detail in this article. The upper limit of the connector spacing-to-thickness ratio is investigated based on the elastic stability theory and the superposition principle, and a limit value of 65k is recommended. Based on the plastic hinge theory, the exi
