Abstract Private and public technical assistance foresters were surveyed in 12 southern states. Their management practices on southern forests are summarized by employment sector. Industrial foresters helped manage more acres per forester than consultants or state foresters. All foresters assisted more in planting trees than in preparing for natural regeneration. Industrial foresters favored clearcutting, consultants selective cuts, and state foresters a mix. Abstract:
Small mammals cause serious damage to forests but there is only little knowledge of their ecology and possibilities of plantation protection. The objective of our study was to collect information on the damage caused by rodents to plantations of forest tree species. Data were obtained from a survey conducted in 2008 that was aimed at damage caused by small mammals. Questionnaires were sent mostly to foresters engaged in the Lesy CR state enterprise. We obtained usable data from 316 foresters. The response rate was 81%. It was confirmed that rodents cause significant damage all over the Czech R

Abstract The aim of this research is to assess the current status, potential and problems of human resources for forestry in municipal state forest management institutions (MSFMIs) of Kazakhstan. A total of 120 MSFMIs are functional in Kazakhstan, with almost 5.5 thousand employees, of which 6.1% are women. Overall 63% are foresters, 13% are masters of the wood, 13% are engineers of forestry of all categories, 7% are forest wardens and 4% are directors. The quality of education of forest workers also varies and a minority of forest workers has a higher education. The scenario also suggested th

Abstract Forest landowners, like farmers, have been subjected to nuisance lawsuits and local ordinances regulating their activities. Two types of right-to-practice-forestry laws offer varying degrees of protection: those that provide a defense against nuisance lawsuits, and those that restrict the ability of local governments to regulate forestry activities. Such laws are becoming more prevalent, but once they are enacted, only legislators can redefine legal and illegal forestry activities. State lawmakers, not foresters, are thus determining the management options of forest landowners.

Abstract To make the most of remotely sensed images and apply them in natural resource management, foresters and other land managers need computer software systems. The ultimate goal is to extract meaningful information from raw images and communicate it to support effective decisionmaking. The following description of the state-of-the-art capabilities available in selected contemporary software systems is a starting point, but readers should compare all available systems that perform a particular function. Understanding the effects of climatic change on mountain forests, where snowpacks and short growing seasons limit tree establishment and growth, is a key concern for both ecologists and foresters. We quantified associations between climatic and biophysical variables and individual conifer species distributions in mountain forests with generalized linear models. For the majority of species, a unimodal response to moisture and temperature gradients was evident, suggesting that an environmental niche can be identified. Species known to respond to limiting factors in the abiotic environment showed

Abstract: This study analyzed the perceptions of four stakeholder groups (forest landowners, private forest consultants, forest management researchers or educators, and federal or state agency foresters), regarding their management practices and preferred geographic growing conditions of loblolly pine in Virginia by combining AHP (analytical hierarchy process) and regression modeling. By ranking the importance of different geographical conditions for managing loblolly pine, we aimed to identify ways to support loblolly growth as a potential feedstock for biofuel generation. The historical development of regeneration surveys in Canada and the associated development of methodologies and standards are reviewed. The importance of sampling methodology and quadrat size in determining stocking values is stressed. The use of technically-based stocking data to inform the public about regeneration is questioned. It is argued that there is need for a new and imaginative measure that is both factual and can be readily comprehended by the public. This presents a challenge to foresters and the governments when reporting on the state of the public's forests. Key words: regenera

Abstract Foresters in the southern United States are responsible for more than 75 percent of the nation's tree planting, and more than 95 percent of the seedlings are genetically improved loblolly and slash pines. Planting the best open-pollinated families on the best sites can dramatically increase productivity. However, such practices reduce genetic diversity in a plantation. Although a survey of state and industrial plantation managers reveals no problems thus far, as more homogeneous plantations are established on more acres, both gains and potential risks must be quantified so that landow

At a traveling art show that features paintings, photography, and other art media, we introduce some science and policy issues and also hear from the public. We found that people appreciate and take advantage of opportunities to interact with us and tell us what they think. With the crossing of the Polish-Soviet border by the Red Army on September 17, 1939, the Soviet authorities had prepared a number of directives to regulate political and social issues. The deportation of military settlers and foresters organized in February 1940 was also subject to these processes. In the Soviet state, bureaucratic reality was more important than the actual observance of written principles in their implementation. This gave the impression of compliance with all legal norms and whenever such a need arose, shortcomings could be argued as a human factor error. The system created
