Abstract:
In the manuscript Idea philosophiae moralis (1679), James Dundas (c.1620−1679), first Lord Arniston, a Presbyterian, a judge and a philosopher, makes extensive use of Stoic themes and authors. About one third of the manuscript is a close reading of Seneca. Dundas judges Stoicism from the perspective of Calvinism: the decisive complaint is that the Stoics are ‘prideful’ when they consider happiness to be within the grasp of fallen human reason. However, pride aside, Dundas is willing to recover some Stoic insights for his Calvinist faith. In what ways? The promise of the practical rewards of St

In his avowedly Stoic De Officiis, Cicero publicizes the persuasive power of a conversational manner, a communicative style consonant with Stoicism's emphasis on human togetherness. The relationships between and among conversation (sermo), Stoicism, and rhetoric call for scrutiny, especially since in other works Cicero decries the uselessness of Stoicism to orators of res publica. By connecting Stoicism with sermo, and sermo with oratory-glory, Cicero fits Stoicism to Rome's political contours and also ushers future leaders of public affairs into both rhetorical and philosophical conversation—

Modern stoicism is becoming increasingly popular in the world: a large number of non-fiction books are published on this topic; many videos reveal the essence of this philosophy; podcasts, articles in magazines, etc. are also dedicated to stoicism. Thus, there is a need to study Stoicism at the scientific level. The study aims to provide an in-depth examination of the history of the Stoic doctrine, in the course of which it is necessary to determine the ideological origins of the Stoic doctrine and the contribution of the Stoics to the development of philosophy. Abstract Several scholars align Nietzsche's philosophy with Stoicism because of their naturalist approaches to ethics and doctrines of eternal recurrence. Yet this alignment is difficult to reconcile with Nietzsche's criticisms of Stoicism's ethical ideal of living according to nature by dispassionately accepting fate—so much so that some conclude that Nietzsche's rebuke of Stoicism undermines his own philosophical project. I argue that affinities between Nietzsche and Stoicism belie deeper disagreement about teleology, which, in turn, yields different understandings of nature and human flouri

Justus Lipsius drew up an intellectual project to reconcile stoic thought with Christianity. In this project, Lipsius started with two assumptions. Second, destiny is a manifestation and an expression of Divine Providence that plays an important part in concrete situations. Has Justus Lipsius been successful at reconciling the Stoics and Christianity? This paper is intended to address this question using a literature review approach. The author

Some of these challenges include lower power density, relatively high cost, and uncertain reliability. These issues are all promoted, at least in part, by the methanol crossover phenomenon, wherein membrane permeability allows the undesirable species transport of methanol from the anode to the cathode
