In 1964, politically-instigated racial turmoil raged throughout British Guiana (now Guyana) as the Caribbean/South American country prepared for independence. Accompanied by rioting, strikes had erupted in 1962 and 1963, and in 1964, violence had been escalating since the commencement of the sugar workers’ strike that began in February of that year. Even so, the extent of the atrocities that took place in Wismar three months later was unprecedented.

All over Europe, workers’ insubordination in the 1960s and 1970s became manifest in a growing number of wildcat strikes. In the Netherlands, under the guise of the so-called consensual ‘polder model’, trade unions were part of a repressive system of industrial relations. From 1963, rank-and-file opposition in ‘unofficial’ strikes forced the ‘official’ unions to abandon their support of restrictive wage policies. After a huge wildcat strike in the port of Rotterdam in 1970, the union leadership changed its policy and began to initiate strikes. In this article, rank-and-file mobilization and the

ABSTRACT: The in-situ stresses of the Kumgrem salt layer in the Tarim Basin is not clear. Since its development, there have been several stuck-bit accidents, affecting oil and gas drilling and development. Therefore, it is significant to establish the in-situ stresses field analysis model to define the in-situ stresses characteristics of the Kumgrem salt layer in the Tarim Basin. In this paper, the in-situ stresses of the Kumgrem salt layer in the Tarim Basin is modeled from local and macroscopic scales. A local in-situ stresses analysis model is established based on logging data. On this basi

Abstract:
We study the Ramsey optimal monetary policy within the Golosov and Lucas (2007) state-dependent pricing framework. The model provides micro-foundations for a nonlinear Phillips curve: the sensitivity of inflation to activity increases after large shocks due to an endogenous rise in the frequency of price changes, as observed during the recent inflation surge. In response to large cost-push shocks, optimal policy leverages the lower sacrifice ratio to reduce inflation and stabilize the frequency of price adjustments. When facing total factor productivity shocks, an efficient disturbance, the op

Studying earthquakes in Baffin Bay and the surrounding regions is challenging. There is no knowledge of earthquake activity in this region prior to 1933 when a moment magnitude (MW) 7.4 earthquake occurred in Baffin Bay. With improved instrumentation, increased seismograph coverage in the north, and modern analysis techniques, knowledge and understanding of earthquakes in the Baffin region is improving. Active seismic zones include Baffin Bay, the east coast of Baffin Island, and the Labrador Sea, separated by areas of low seismicity. Focal-mechanism solutions show a mix of faulting styles, pr

Abstract:
The purposes of this mixed-method study were to (i) investigate and compare the perception of academic plagiarism of Thai postgraduate students from interdisciplinary studies; (ii) verify and compare the students’ actual practice of plagiarism; (iii) examine and justify contributory factors influencing plagiarism; and (iv) estimate and construct alternative measures for plagiarism prevention in the Thai context. The findings were as follows: (1) the quantitative analysis of 196 students’ perception, comprising awareness and knowledge, of plagiarism based on two main fields of study—science and

Presented at the 10th Annual Conference on Global Economic Analysis, Purdue University, USA Team research has been much more widespread in the natural sciences than in economics. Yet when it comes to modeling an economy (especially the global economy) in detail, the quantity and range of inputs necessary makes team work the only viable option. Drawing some inspiration from Australian experience, GTAP’s founder, Tom Hertel, realized this from his Project’s inception in 1993. The data base required to model international trade flows could not have been developed without the enthusiastic cooperat

Linear city bus services are facing increased challenges from city growth. Increased number of inhabitants on increasing acres of built-up areas, makes it demanding to maintain adequate bus services within reasonable catchment areas. Number of departures per hour give a partial description of the bus service quality. Number of departures give reference to the time aspect of bus service quality, but say nothing about the geographical aspect. What part of the entire line network is within reach of direct bus service when frequencies are limited? To address the geographical aspect of bus service
