Here the focus of analysis is on those strikes which began with demands raised by women workers. The essay examines the nature of women workers' demands, the ways in which cooperation with male co-workers altered those demands, and the affect that formal union involvement had on women strikers and their strike demands. Because the original set of case studies examines strikes across the United States, the strikes explored here also highli

The author estimates the influence of foreign corporate ownership and international unionism on strike activity in Canadian manufacturing between 1965 and 1985, controlling for several other determinants of strike activity that were largely ignored in previous studies. He finds, contrary to the results of other studies, that the incidence and duration of strikes did not differ significantly between foreign-owned and domestically owned firms or between international and national unions. Strike incidence was significantly lower, however, among unions affiliated with the AFL-CIO than among unions

The author hypothesizes a two-way causality between intracontractual strikes and productivity change in U.S. manufacturing: on the one hand, strikes during the term of a contract, which are thought to reflect more broadly practiced shop floor militancy, slow the pace of productivity growth; and on the other hand, periods of rapid productivity growth provoke increased intracontractual strike activity, among other forms of shop floor protest. The model is tested with quarterly data from 1961 through 1981. Modified two-stage least squares estimates support the hypothesis of two-way causality. A s

In a society closely monitored by British colonial authorities and well acquainted with the Greek-Cypriot claim for Enosis, or the political union of Cyprus with Greece, the labor question became a locus, or “interstice of power structure,” articulating competing and mutually exclusiv

Conventional wisdom holds that Turkish trade unions became independent of the state power with class-based interests only after this reform. Across mainstream literature, this is considered, in historical institutionalist terms, as the first critical juncture in Turkey's industrial relations. Because of the orientation of the strainmeter rod with respect to the back azimuth to Chile, the ISA strainmeter is relatively insensitive to G (Love) waves and higher order (order ≥ 6) toroidal modes, yet long-period G waves and toroidal modes were recorded with large amplitude o
