Abstract:
The article deals with the study of stylistic techniques and means of expression characteristic of English speech expression, the study of means and methods of communication of independent sentences, as well as phrasal units, ways to combine them into fragments and whole speech texts. The paper identifies and generalizes scientific approaches to the study of stylistic syntax techniques, analyzes syntactic constructions that have expressive potential and pragmatic orientation. It is established that the subject of syntactic stylistics is also the study of the specifics of the functioning of expressive means and techniques in complex linguistic texts. It is found that the stylistic technique is realized, as a rule, in the context of phrasal units, paragraph and whole text, and the interaction of sentence models in these contexts gives emotional and expressive meaning to the segments of speech that they form. Thus, stylistic devices based on formal and semantic interactions of several syntactic constructions or sentences in a particular context, is one of the richest sources of speech expression. These stylistic devices serve as a means of poetic syntax, and are widely used in fiction, journalism and are found in scientific language. Despite the fact that each stylistic device individually contributes to the overall expressiveness of the text, a greater effect is achieved through their interaction, and with the help of these stylistic devices, contact with the addressee is established, the emotional background and emphaticity of the text are enhanced. Therefore, expressive means and stylistic techniques of syntax, which are created both with the use of stylistically marked constructions and without their participation, are one of the richest means of stylistics of the English language. The considered cases of violation of the usual logic of syntactic connection of parts of a complex sentence, semantic differences between their usual and occasional use bring subjective motives into the text and are used with certain stylistic purposes, which due to functioning together have a greater effect.

Abstract Over recent years, the use of corpora in stylistic analysis has grown in popularity. However, questions still remain over the remit of corpus stylistics, its distinction from corpus linguistics generally and its capacity to explain complex stylistic effects. This article argues in favour of an integrated corpus stylistics; that is, an approach to corpus stylistics that integrates it with other stylistic methods and analytical frameworks. I suggest that this approach is needed for two main reasons: (i) it is analytically necessary in order to fully explain stylistic effects in texts, and (ii) integrating corpus methods with other stylistic tools is what will distinguish corpus stylistics from corpus linguistics. My argument is supported by reference to examples from Mark Haddon’s no vel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time and the HBO TV series Deadwood. Both these examples rely for their explanation on a combination of corpus stylistic analytical techniques and other stylistic methods of analysis.

Abstract:
The theme of the work is the mechanisms of implicit meanings verbalization infiction. The aim is to analyze stylistic convergence in the story of I.A. Bunin "The murderess" as an explication of subtext. The main methods are the following: denotative, chronotopic, stylistic, narrative, conceptual analysis. The main results identify stylistic mechanisms that provide an appropriate interpretation of the literary text. It is revealed that the stylistic convergence includes colorative gradation, parcelling, semantic-syntactic verbalization of perceptual concept, semantic-stylistic actualization of the "golden section", conceptual antonymy, semantic sound images. Implicit meanings are identified in the narrative development: stylistic techniques and mechanisms of implicit artistic meanings verbalization are distinguished in each macrosituation. The term "method" traditionally refers to the conscious using of stylistic means by the author; the term "mechanism" is understood as a synergistic process of organizing the text space as a result of interpretative operations. The described techniques and mechanisms add to the repertoire of artistic stylistics. The means of fiction temporality are nominated; the vertical chronotope in macrosituations is modelled. The special feature of Bunin's story composition is "the effect of eversion": it transfers the semantic emphasis from the criminal action to the assessment of this action. The analysis confirms ecphrasticityand visualization of the image of an icon of the phenomenon within the analyzed story. The main oppositions power / people is distinguished in the conceptual field. The role of stylistic device in the synergetic organization of the text is shown. The main conclusion is drawn that the implicitness, ambiguity and "multi-focus" of the author's assessment as a feature of Bunin's idiostyle is realized through the mechanism of stylistic convergence.

Introduction. The relevance of the article is determined by the need to identify and describe the stylistic characteristics of the texts of folklore genres, as well as revealing the composition of the identified expressive means and figurative techniques of the Mari language. With a modern interest to the spiritual heritage of nations, the development of philological sciences, an analysis of the stylistic characteristics of the texts of Mari fairy tales can provide a more complete picture of the language and style of Mari folklore, which is an integral part of the system of functional styles of the Mari language. The article presents new data on the systemic nature of stylistic devices in the texts of folk tales. Materials and Methods. The empirical material is presented by 133 Mari folk fairy tales borrowed from various sources and considered from the stylistics within the framework of the theory of systems using a combination of general scientific (analysis and synthesis) and specific stylistic (semantic-stylistic, stylistic interpretation of the text) methods. Results and Discussion. The identified and described set of expressive and figurative means testifies to the wide variety of the components of folklore functional style, which is part of the system of styles of the Mari language. The algorithm for studying expressive means and figurative techniques in the texts of fairy tales presented in the article makes it possible to use the theoretical basis and methodological base in the study of texts of other folklore genres that belong not only to the Mari linguistic culture. Conclusion. The relevance and significance of the research is determined by the tasks set in it resulting in definition of new data on the systemic nature and components of the style of folk fairy tales. The main part of the system of stylistic devices is made up of expressive techniques of the phonological and syntactic levels of texts, supplemented by techniques of the morphological and lexical levels.

Abstract:
This research is dedicated to the topic of multivariate translations. Leaning on the text corpus that contains 16 French translations of A. S. Pushkin's novel “Eugene Onegin”, analysis is conducted on the peculiarities of conveying certain characteristic stylistic patterns in French texts alongside other stylistic techniques of the original, as well as changes in translations depending on the poetic form chosen by the translator. The selected extensive material trace traces the evolution of translators’ approach towards the stylistics of Pushkin's text over time. The article focuses on the chapters III and VIII of the novel. Comparative analysis demonstrates the dependence of the stylistic aspect of translation on the poetic form chosen by the translator. Prose translations provide more accurate stylistic equivalents than translations of the verses. Poetry translations are divided into two groups: 1) accurate compliance with the of Onegin’s verse; 2) departure from the rhyme pattern of the original. The frequency of transmitting stylistic techniques of the original in both groups does not demonstrated significant systematic differences. The author determines the consistencies in conveying certain stylistic patterns in various French translations. Periphrases, comparisons, inversions, and metaphors most of the time receive stylistically accurate equivalents in all translations; while metonymy and polysyndeton with conjunction “and” do not. The scientific novelty lies in examination of the text corpus that contains virtually all existing full translations of the novel “Eugene Onegin”.

A very recent trend in stylistics proposes the extension of its field of enquiry to accommodate various forms of multimodal art. Reflecting as it does the growing semiotic complexity of contemporary aesthetics, ‘multimodal stylistics’ is a welcome development. So far, however, its proponents have concentrated on genres in which texts are complemented by, or realized through, the visual medium – films, stage plays, television series and illustrated books. In this article, a multimodal stylistic analysis is attempted on a genre which has attracted little critical attention in linguistics – modern pop-rock music. A 1985 song by singer-songwriter Kate Bush, ‘Running Up That Hill’, is studied linguistically and musically. Employing a blend of stylistic and musicological techniques, and some of the insights provided by newborn multimodal stylistics, the author explores the complex ways in which meaning is created in a pop-rock song.

Recent years have seen substantial advances in ‘corpus stylistics’, which is the use of corpora and computational techniques to study literary style. Corpus stylistics has produced analyses of otherwise imperceptible features of literary style. However, studies in corpus stylistics have rarely considered the full set of core linguistic features. The present study explores literary style through the application of Multi-Dimensional analysis. Stylistic variation along three dimensions is accounted for using a large, principled corpus of fiction. The dimensions of variation are interpreted as ‘Thought Presentation versus Description’, ‘Abstract Exposition versus Concrete Action’, and ‘Dialogue versus Narrative’. These three dimensions are then used to compare the styles of nineteenth-century fiction between authors, and the range of stylistic variation among the novels of individual authors. The findings are interpreted qualitatively and with reference to previous analyses of author style.

This review focuses on contemporary work in discourse stylistics, defined here as that designated branch of stylistics which draws specifically on the techniques and methods of discourse analysis. The review acknowledges a key assumption in modern discourse stylistic research, namely that the distinction between ‘literary’ and ‘nonliterary’ discourse, if tenable at all, is drawn not on a purely linguistic basis but in terms of multiple intersections among texts, readers, institutions, and sociocultural contexts. In spanning studies of both literary and nonliterary discourse, therefore, the coverage of the present review is intended to reflect this axiom. It also attempts to foreground the diversity of method and approach in contemporary discourse stylistics. Given that the techniques of discourse analysis are themselves many and various, the survey seeks to cover stylistic work that offers productive applications of the many available models in pragmatics, conversation analysis, cognitive linguistics, speech act theory, and discourse psychology. Finally, in covering a selection of important monographs, articles, and book chapters, the review seeks both to highlight some of the critical, cultural, and ideological frameworks currently employed by discourse stylisticians and to demarcate, in more general terms, the current state-of-play in this research tradition.

This paper aims to employ one of the corpus stylistic methods to analyze Thomas Harris's novel, The Silence of the Lambs. Recently, technology has invaded our lives. To put it differently, researchers depend highly on computers to access and gain information about certain data. Thus, it is crucial to keep up with the up-to-date developments concerning computational methodologies and toolkits. Corpus stylistics helps to find certain features that cannot be understood without using the techniques of computers. In order to achieve this goal, a quantitative and qualitative methodology is applied. Corpus stylistics helps to analyze lengthy texts more efficiently. This is not to say that it substitutes the manual stylistic one. In fact, both the corpus and manual stylistic analyses work hand in glove, and they complement each other. The tool that is used to conduct the analysis by examining keywords and key semantic domains is Wmatrix3. In addition to the previous tool, AntConc is a complementary tool to investigate n- grams in the novel and to point out their significance to the overall interpretation.

Les outils et méthodes d’analyse d’images de documents (DIA) donnent aujourd’hui la possibilité de faire des recherches par mots-clés dans des bases d’images de documents alors même qu’aucune transcription n’est disponible. Dans ce contexte, beaucoup de travaux ont déjà été réalisés sur les OCR ainsi que sur des systèmes de repérage de mots (spotting) dédiés à des documents textuels avec une mise en page simple. En revanche, très peu d’approches ont été étudiées pour faire de la recherche dans des documents contenant du texte multi-orienté et multi-échelle, comme dans les documents graphiques. Par exemple, les images de cartes géographiques peuvent contenir des symboles, des graphiques et du texte ayant des orientations et des tailles différentes. Dans ces documents, les caractères peuvent aussi être connectés entre eux ou bien à des éléments graphiques. Par conséquent, le repérage de mots dans ces documents se révèle être une tâche difficile. Dans cette thèse nous proposons un ensemble d’outils et méthodes dédiés au repérage de mots écrits en caractères bengali ou anglais (script Roman) dans des images de documents géographiques. L’approche proposée repose sur plusieurs originalités
Word spotting in graphical documents is a very challenging task. To address such scenarios this thesis deals with developing a word spotting system dedicated to geographical documents with Bangla and English (Roman) scripts. In the proposed system, at first, text-graphics layers are separated using filtering, clustering and self-reinforcement through classifier. Additionally, instead of using binary decision we have used probabilistic measurement to represent the text components. Subsequently, in the text layer, character segmentation approach is applied using water-reservoir based method to extract individual character from the document. Then recognition of these isolated characters is done using rotation invariant feature, coupled with SVM classifier. Well recognized characters are then grouped based on their sizes. Initial spotting is started to find a query word among those groups of characters. In case if the system could spot a word partially due to any noise, SIFT is applied to identify missing portion of that partial spotting. Experimental results on Roman and Bangla scripts document images show that the method is feasible to spot a location in text labeled graphical documents. Experiments are done on an annotated dataset which was developed for this work. We have made this annotated dataset available publicly for other researchers

Abstract:
Tourist texts provides information to a wide variety of readers. The main functions of these texts is typically to be both informative and persuasive. When translating a tourist text, the translator should not only maintain these two functions in the target text, but is also faced with the challenge of adapting the text to the premises of the target culture.      The aim of this study is to identify the characteristics of the cultural aspects related to history and religion, as well as the stylistic features in the tourist text Los Caminos del Norte a Santiago. The techniques used in the translation of these aspects from the original spanish cultural context to the new swedish target culture are also studied, more specificly which ones of these translation techniques are the most frecuently used and why.      A cualitative as well as a cuantitative analysis of our translation has been carried out, which indicates that the translation techniques most commonly used regarding the translation of the cultural aspects related to history and religion was amplification and modulation. These were used, for example, in order to compensate for the lack of previous knowledge of the Spanish culture amongst the target text readers. Regarding the adaptation of the style to the target context, modulation and especially generalization was the most commonly used translation techniques. This is due to the intention of making the text less formal and poetic so as to better adjust to the target culture and its textual conventions.

Abstract:
This thesis empirically investigates how a corpus linguistic approach can address the main theoretical and methodological challenges facing the field of forensic authorship analysis. Linguists approach the problem of questioned authorship from the theoretical position that each person has their own distinctive idiolect (Coulthard 2004: 431). However, the notion of idiolect has come under scrutiny in forensic linguistics over recent years for being too abstract to be of practical use (Grant 2010; Turell 2010). At the same time, two competing methodologies have developed in authorship analysis. On the one hand, there are qualitative stylistic approaches, and on the other there are statistical ‘stylometric’ techniques. This study uses a corpus of over 60,000 emails and 2.5 million words written by 176 employees of the former American company Enron to tackle these issues in the contexts of both authorship attribution (identifying authors using linguistic evidence) and author profiling (predicting authors’ social characteristics using linguistic evidence). Analyses reveal that even in shared communicative contexts, and when using very common lexical items, individual Enron employees produce distinctive collocation patterns and lexical co-selections. In turn, these idiolectal elements of linguistic output can be captured and quantified by word n-grams (strings of n words). An attribution experiment is performed using word n-grams to identify the authors of anonymised email samples. Results of the experiment are encouraging, and it is argued that the approach developed here offers a means by which stylistic and statistical techniques can complement each other. Finally, quantitative and qualitative analyses are combined in the sociolinguistic profiling of Enron employees by gender and occupation. Current author profiling research is exclusively statistical in nature. However, the findings here demonstrate that when statistical results are augmented by qualitative evidence, the complex relationship between language use and author identity can be more accurately observed.

This study focuses on the analyses of the stylistic elements and challenges of technique and improvisation in three late piano works by the South African composer Surendran Reddy. Reddy’s personal identity as a crossover artist is apparent in his stylistic approach. The fusion of Western art music, jazz, contemporary and indigenous music from various parts of the world ensued in a distinctive compositional style, which he termed clazz. Three of his shorter late piano compositions, namely African Funk for Felix (2005), Ballad for Thomas (2005) and Toccata for John Roos (2007), contain key characteristics of Reddy’s clazz style. It also represents the composer’s own pianistic virtuosity that renders them challenging to performers. The technical, stylistic and improvisational difficulties in these three works are investigated through a practice-led approach. The methodologies used to study and perform these works were researched by means of two interviews conducted with two professional South African pianists who have performed these works. The technical difficulties in these compositions are delineated and potential solutions to overcome virtuoso passages through fingering suggestions or recommendations for alternative practising methods are examined. The diverse stylistic influences on these works, such as gospel, rock, funk, soul, pop, jazz and various elements of Western art music, are identified, discussed and explored, with emphasis on the influence of South African jazz on Reddy’s conceptualisation of clazz. Prescribed improvisation sections are examined in-depth, and potential performance strategies are devised in the form of notated exercises that would hopefully serve as an accessible methodological approach.

Ce travail se propose d’étudier, sous un angle grammatical, le phénomène romanesque connu sous le nom de "monologue intérieur", qu’il convient d’emblée de distinguer du "stream of consciousness", auquel il est souvent ramené. Afin de mieux cerner et de définir ce qu’est le monologue intérieur, nous confrontons les définitions qui en sont généralement données à des textes de fiction anglophones, et nous analysons les techniques linguistiques utilisées pour représenter ce discours particulier. Il apparaît donc que le monologue intérieur n’est pas une technique linguistique mais doit plutôt se concevoir comme une catégorie narratologique. Ce discours s’incarne grâce à diverses techniques linguistiques : le discours immédiat mais aussi certaines des techniques du discours rapporté, avec en son centre le discours direct (libre) et à sa périphérie le discours indirect classique. Le discours indirect libre, quant à lui, navigue entre les deux. Ces différentes techniques reposent donc sur une conception particulière du discours intérieur qu’elles véhiculent, et leur étude permet d’étudier la possibilité offerte à l’auteur ou au narrateur de détourner leur forme afin de servir une stratégie narrative, avec parfois pour but de faire passer pour verbal ce qui ne peut l’être
This thesis investigates the literary phenomenon known as “interior monologue” from a grammatical point of view, and is based on a clear distinction between “interior monologue” and what is called “stream of consciousness”, both phenomena usually being seen as the same. The main objectives are therefore to define what we call “interior monologue” in order to confront this definition with English language literary texts, and to analyse the various linguistic techniques used to represent this special discourse. Interior monologue is therefore seen not as a linguistic technique but as a narratological category. This particular discourse is represented using different linguistic techniques: “immediate discourse” but also some of the reported speech techniques, with (free) direct speech as the core of the category, and indirect speech at its periphery, free indirect speech navigating between those two poles. These techniques differ both in their form and in the conception of the interior discourse they convey, but they always create the illusion of giving access to the (fictional) original discourse. It is for this reason that we want to show the possibility for the author or the narrator to use a syntactic form suggesting a reported discourse seemingly closely linked to the original discourse, to represent something that sometimes cannot be considered as verbal

Le premier volume est consacré à l’analyse des matériaux et des techniques utilisées pour la fabrication des « modèles » funéraires, c’est-à-dire, les maquettes en bois représentant des personnages ou des scènes de la vie quotidienne, typiques du mobilier funéraire des élites entre la fin de l’Ancien et la fin du Moyen Empire (env. 2350-1630 av. J.-C.). Dans une première partie, axée sur le matériel provenant des sites de Saqqâra, Assiout et Meir, les traits stylistiques et techniques ont été examinés afin de définir des groupes d’objets et identifier des ateliers de production. Des critères de datation ont ensuite été définis et comparés aux autres pièces du mobilier funéraire découverts dans les sépultures étudiées. Suivant un déroulé chronologique depuis la fin de l’Ancien Empire, la deuxième partie se concentre sur les ateliers de fabrication et les contacts interrégionaux. Une attention particulière est portée au rapport qui unit pouvoir royal, élites et artisans au travers de l’envoi d’équipements funéraires et plus particulièrement des modèles en bois découverts de la région memphite à la Haute-Égypte. La troisième partie s’intéresse aux fonctions sociales, économiques et religieuses des modèles et examine plus particulièrement le rapport étroit qui unit ce mobilier et les pratiques funéraires entre la fin de l’Ancien et la fin du Moyen Empire. Le deuxième volume présente le corpus des modèles en bois examinés. Un troisième volume est consacré aux annexes.L’examen des modèles en bois, significatif de profonds changements politiques et religieux à l’origine de nouvelles coutumes et croyances funéraires entre la VIème et la XIIIème dynastie, précise le contexte géographique, historique et social associé à la fabrication et à l’utilisation de ce mobilier et permet d’affiner la perception du rapport entre artisans et pouvoir, rapport omniprésent dans la société égyptienne antique dès la période prédynastique
The first part focuses on material analysis and process use for the manufacturing of funerary “models”. These wooden objects represent people or everyday scenes of life, used by Egyptian elites for funeral furniture between the end of the Old Kingdom to the end of the Middle Kingdom (cir. 2350-1630 BC). In a first part, focused on objects from Saqqara, Assiut and Meir, the stylistic and technical features were examined to define groups of objects and workshops. Then, dating criteria were defined and compared with the funeral furniture discovered in the studied graves. According to one unwound chronological since the end of the Old Kingdom, the second part concentrates on workshops and interregional contacts. A particular attention is worn in the relationship between royal power, elites and craftsmen through the sending of funeral equipment and more particularly bare wooden models of the Memphite area to the Upper Egypt. The third part is interested in the social, economic and religious functions of the models and examines more particularly the narrow relationship which unites this furniture and the funeral practices between the end of the Old Kingdom to the end of the Middle Kingdom. The second volume presents the corpus of the examined wooden models. The third volume is dedicated to appendices. The examination of wooden models, significant of political and religious deep changes at the origin of new customs and funeral faiths between the VIth and the XIIIth dynasty, specifies the geographical, historic and social context associated with the manufacturing. The analysis of these objects allows refining the perception of the relationship between craftsmen and power, omnipresent in the Egyptian society from the Predynastic period

Abstract:
This is a semantic study, dealing with style and technique in the short stories of D. B. Z. Ntuli. The study as a whole analyses Ntuli' s first six volumes of short stories. The first chapter is an introduction, dealing with the aim of the study. The second sub-section after aim is Ntuli's biographical notes. Full details of this author from high school attendance to his contribution during his working experience are given. Ntuli's biography is followed by the scope of study. Under this sub-heading, short story volumes to be analysed are clearly stated. The fourth sub-heading is the method of approach and a conclusion. Chapter two deals with various types of repetition, a literary technique. It analyses Ntuli's use of language, and repetition of sentences approaching it from different angles. Chapter three and four deal with choice of words. The former chapter handles the various types of language elements semantically and the latter deals specifically with the ideophone. The ideophone is sub-divided into two sub-sections: classification and usage. Chapter five deals with proverbial expressions and these are sub-divided into two sections: idioms and proverbs. The usage of idiomatic expressions is discussed under: verbs, nouns and qualificatives, while the proverbs are analysed under classification and syntax. Imagery is dealt with in chapter six. Imagery is further sub-divided into four categories: metaphor, simile, personification and symbolism. Style and structure are discussed in chapter seven. In this chapter various elements of language forms are handled: types of sentenceidiophonic; negative forms of the ideophone, with conjunctives; sentences with adverbs; the demonstratives; titles of short story volumes and naming of characters. Chapter eight is the general conclusion, reflecting on Ntuli's style and technique with special emphasis on his unique use of the language. Reference is made to discoveries regarding the author's use of vocabulary, and his techniques in using repetition as well as avoiding it, which is part of his style. His choice of words and how he arranges them on paper is also discussed. Ntuli's choice of titles in naming his short story volumes is summed up showing that these have been influenced by his background. The study concludes by suggesting areas that still require further analysis in Ntuli 's short stories.

This chapter introduces a range of approaches to the measurement and digital quantification of literary style: stylometry or digital stylistics. The chapter begins with a history of stylometric thinking, ranging from approximately 1851 through to contemporary multi-dimensional fingerprinting techniques, such as Burrows’s delta method. It then progresses to discuss close vs. large-scale literary reading and the problematic terminology of ‘distant reading’ (namely, that one can use computational techniques also to read closely, despite this also being a type of ‘distant’ reading). This chapter analyses and interprets the singing of Freddie Mercury. It is argued that the singer utilised four predominant voice types—powerful, gritty, sincere, exaggerated—which were defined by combinations of vocal techniques. These voice types often aligned with stylistic contexts but were also utilised to emphasise the structural dynamics of songs, such as moving from a lighter tone (e.g. sincere) to a powerful tone at the onset of a pre-chorus. Furthermore, Mercury’s deployment of these voice types in incongruous stylistic contexts (e.g. a breathy tone in a hard rock song), along with the ambiguity as to whether he possessed a ‘true’ voice, may be read as queer vocal strategies that challenge heteronormative conventions of male rock singing. It is argued that his vocal aesthetic was influenced by Liza Minnelli and Marilyn Monroe—theatrical voices—which underscores his ability to present a distinct performance identity.

This chapter traces the presence of Tarkovskian thematic and stylistic motifs in a series of Zvyagintsev’s films, such as the father/son relationship in The Return (2003), elegiac visual techniques in The Banishment (2007), and the Brueghelian landscape in Loveless (2017). The chapter demonstrates how Tarkovsky’s explorations of the relationship between memory and ontology give rise to Zvyagintsev’s enactments of processes of individuation that are not predicated upon difference. The chapter also discusses how it is important for Zvyagintsev to maintain his own authorial autonomy from the depersonalizing influence of the inherited tradition.

This book examines the intricacies of the American film's stylistic remediation of comics. Stylistic remediation refers to the stylistic practice by films (both adaptations of comics and original properties), in which they have increasingly relied on the formal characteristics of comic books (such as panels, speed lines, the dissection of motion, flat compositions). For their part, comics have drawn upon formal devices derived from film (such as the film noir compositional technique of high-contrast lighting and Photoshop assisted motion blurring to produce a more cinematic look). The book explores how stylistic remediation complicates the idea of media specificity, the role of horizontal integration and conglomeration in the process of stylistic remediation, the industrial motivation behind remediation in films and comics, and whether the remediation of comic book stylistics into films is fundamentally a by-product of technologies and an indication of a larger ontological shift from cinema to digital cinema.

The purpose of the study pertains to the technology and techniques of ancient and modern icon painting. In particular, their principal processes that are presented on the basis of the author's experience and practical application tested by the well-known scientists-fine art experts. Methodology. The study was conducted using a complex of methods, such as historical, comparative, typological, analysis and generalizations, descriptive, visual, technological (chemical properties and physico-chemical processes); documentary (official and unofficial recorded information, books, manuscripts, etc.); artistic and stylistic (analysis of the manner of individual masters, their schools, separate fine arts periods); philosophical (metaphysical method: essence and phenomenon; substance and form); theological (church canons; divinity of the icon); method of artistic analysis. Research results. A unique author's technology of producing icons was developed and described on the basis of the study of the best methods of ancient and modern technological processes. This technology has been tested by the well-known students of the sacred art. Scientific novelty of the obtained results is that valuable materials dealing with the use of the ancient techniques and technological processes in modern sacred art have been contributed to the Ukrainian fine arts science, particularly, icon painting using the ancient egg-tempera techniques (taking into account the author's experience). Recommendations. The study of the ancient techniques and technological processes and their application in contemporary painting still require further theoretical research.

Currently, there are several approaches to provide anonymity on the Internet. However, one can still identify anonymous users through their writing style. With the advances in neural network and natural language processing research, the success of a classifier when accurately identify the author of a text is growing. On the other hand, new approaches that use recurrent neural networks for automatic generation of obfuscated texts have also arisen to fight anonymity adversaries. In this work, we evaluate two approaches that use neural networks to generate obfuscated texts. In our experiments, we compared the efficiency of both techniques when removing the stylistic attributes of a text and preserving its original semantics. Our results show a trade-off between the obfuscation level and the text semantics.

The instability of modern social conditions, informational and emotional richness of learning contribute to the emergence of negative states of fear, uncertainty, aggression, and provokes psychosomatic disorders of students. In order to satisfy the requirements of society, it is necessary to have a high level of development of the ability to control oneself, allowing self-regulation of the mental state within certain social frameworks. In everyday life, students use sets of techniques developed in individual experience that allow them to cope with negative conditions, enter the educational rhythm or relieve stress. Therefore, it is relevant to study spontaneously developing methods and techniques for self-regulation of states that help prevent the negative dynamics of the current state and provide an acceptable level of adaptation. In this regard, the article aims at studying ordinary ways of self-regulation of negative states of students and their relationship with the productivity of cognitive processes and individual cognitive styles. According to the results of the study, we found that typical negative states of students are fatigue, laziness, frustration. The most frequent methods of their regulation are communication, music, walking, sleeping. The relationship between the productive, stylistic characteristics of cognitive processes and the choice of self-regulation methods is shown. Thus, respondents with a high level of imagination and heuristic cognitive style choose a method of communication. Differences in the methods of self-regulation and experienced states in boys and girls were revealed. The results can be of interest to teachers and practical psychologists in education.

Precedent-Based learning is related to a very old method of teaching, particularly in the studio setting. Usually it takes the form of precedent analysis. An empirical study was conducted in order to better understand how experienced designers use precedents in the course of a brief design session. Normative theories of learning suggest that success is most likely to be achieved when students learn (1) the principles governing events or phenomenon in a discipline, and (2) ways of applying these principles to specific situations to solve problems of various kinds. We call this the didactic method. In the didactic approach there is a systematic representation of the fundamental principles of knowledge that identify a specific domain upon which a corpus of applications or problem-solving skills can be constructed. In fields that deal with professional practice, for example design, instruction appears to deviate from this pattern in significant ways. Students are rarely given robust principles (ones that hold in different contexts), let alone immutable ones, upon which they can construct designs that can be judged unequivocally or without error. Instead they are given plenty of precedents from which to learn a variety of heuristics. This type of knowledge is fundamentally tacit, situated in a context of extra-domain information, and involving pedagogy that is principally experiential. In architectural curricula, the experiential approach to learning is omnipresent. Descriptions of design instruction, or for that matter, architectural curricula within which such instruction is found, are invariably of an indirect kind. They describe the stylistic or formal attributes of the architecture that is promoted by the particular pedagogy in order to explain its characteristics, principles and techniques [5,7,8,11,19].

The article contains a linguistic analysis of the book ‘The Drawn City’ by A. Ryzhkov; the book comprises reproductions of pictures and respective text in the context of a mental map of the city of Yekaterinburg. In approaching the mental map as spatial information in people’s minds, reflecting the image of the city, the goals of linguistic analysis are to show the vision of the metropolis and the linguistic ways of verbally expressing the thoughts and feelings of the landscape artist; to determine the value to society of the private perception of the city through artistic representation and textual expression. Stylistic analysis of the text reveals the dominant features regarding the lexical, morphological and syntactic levels, while the pragmatics of the text consider its social relevance. Peculiar traits of the author’s style of the artist and the writer, as perceived by readers, have been listed; important points of the mental map of the city have been defined accounting for the book’s content: architecture, dominant idea, eclectics. The perception of time in synchronicity and diachronicity in the narrative regarding Yekaterinburg is considered, the motif of transition from reality to imagery is shown. Examples are given of positive, negative and contradictory evaluations of architectural objects, verbally influencing readers through the creation of visual images. There are linguistic tricks listed which were used in the book by A. Ryzhkov uses language techniques that hold the attention of the recipient of the text: comparison, personification, the use of colloquial language, humour and wordplay, and dialogisation. Methods of the creation of an imagery-geographic map of urban space have been shown in the author’s iconic-symbolic form. A conclusion was made on the significance of the book of A. Ryzhkov having used a visual-verbal method for the creation of a sustainable and replicable image of the city in the human mind. The artist’s civic stance on city protection has been set forth.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper discusses a combination of techniques that lets stylists and designers experience believable 1:1 interactions with virtual prototypes using immersive environments. The intent is to replace physical prototypes with believable virtual prototypes and then use them as the basis for communicating design intent within formal or informal design reviews. Achieving a reasonable degree of “believability” and natural interaction within this context requires addressing a broad range of problems, including: perception of scale, varying frame-rates, non-intuitive interaction devices and process and data integration just to name a few. In addition to these challenges, designers and stylists want to examine multiple forms of product data including bitmaps, movies, text information and 3D data within a single visual context. This paper describes an approach for visualizing and interacting with various forms of product data within a fully immersed environment for the purposes of concept design (the phase of product design where the overall functionality and shape of the product is determined [Kraftcheck, 1997]).

Abstract:
Text style transfer pursues altering the style of a sentence while remaining its main content unchanged. Due to the lack of parallel corpora, most recent work focuses on unsupervised methods and has achieved noticeable progress. Nonetheless, the intractability of completely disentangling content from style for text leads to a contradiction of content preservation and style transfer accuracy. To address this problem, we propose a style instance supported method, StyIns. Instead of representing styles with embeddings or latent variables learned from single sentences, our model leverages the generative flow technique to extract underlying stylistic properties from multiple instances of each style, which form a more discriminative and expressive latent style space. By combining such a space with the attention-based structure, our model can better maintain the content and simultaneously achieve high transfer accuracy. Furthermore, the proposed method can be flexibly extended to semi-supervised learning so as to utilize available limited paired data. Experiments on three transfer tasks, sentiment modification, formality rephrasing, and poeticness generation, show that StyIns obtains a better balance between content and style, outperforming several recent baselines.

Abstract:
The article investigates functional techniques of extralinguistic expression in multimedia texts; the effectiveness of figurative expressions as a reaction to modern events in Ukraine and their influence on the formation of public opinion is shown. Publications of journalists, broadcasts of media resonators, experts, public figures, politicians, readers are analyzed. The language of the media plays a key role in shaping the worldview of the young political elite in the first place. The essence of each statement is a focused thought that reacts to events in the world or in one’s own country. The most popular platform for mass information and social interaction is, first of all, network journalism, which is characterized by mobility and unlimited time and space. Authors have complete freedom to express their views in direct language, including their own word formation. Phonetic, lexical, phraseological and stylistic means of speech create expression of the text. A figurative word, a good aphorism or proverb, a paraphrased expression, etc. enhance the effectiveness of a multimedia text. This is especially important for headlines that simultaneously inform and influence the views of millions of readers. Given the wide range of issues raised by the Internet as a medium, research in this area is interdisciplinary. The science of information, combining language and social communication, is at the forefront of global interactions. The Internet is an effective source of knowledge and a forum for free thought. Nonlinear texts (hypertexts) – «branching texts or texts that perform actions on request», multimedia texts change the principles of information collection, storage and dissemination, involving billions of readers in the discussion of global issues. Mastering the word is not an easy task if the author of the publication is not well-read, is not deep in the topic, does not know the psychology of the audience for which he writes. Therefore, the study of media broadcasting is an important component of the professional training of future journalists. The functions of the language of the media require the authors to make the right statements and convincing arguments in the text. Journalism education is not only knowledge of imperative and dispositive norms, but also apodictic ones. In practice, this means that there are rules in media creativity that are based on logical necessity. Apodicticity is the first sign of impressive language on the platform of print or electronic media. Social expression is a combination of creative abilities and linguistic competencies that a journalist realizes in his activity. Creative self-expression is realized in a set of many important factors in the media: the choice of topic, convincing arguments, logical presentation of ideas and deep philological education. Linguistic art, in contrast to painting, music, sculpture, accumulates all visual, auditory, tactile and empathic sensations in a universal sign – the word. The choice of the word for the reproduction of sensory and semantic meanings, its competent use in the appropriate context distinguishes the journalist-intellectual from other participants in forums, round tables, analytical or entertainment programs. Expressive speech in the media is a product of the intellect (ability to think) of all those who write on socio-political or economic topics. In the same plane with him – intelligence (awareness, prudence), the first sign of which (according to Ivan Ogienko) is a good knowledge of the language. Intellectual language is an important means of organizing a journalistic text. It, on the one hand, logically conveys the author’s thoughts, and on the other – encourages the reader to reflect and comprehend what is read. The richness of language is accumulated through continuous self-education and interesting communication. Studies of social expression as an important factor influencing the formation of public consciousness should open up new facets of rational and emotional media broadcasting; to trace physical and psychological reactions to communicative mimicry in the media. Speech mimicry as one of the methods of disguise is increasingly becoming a dangerous factor in manipulating the media. Mimicry is an unprincipled adaptation to the surrounding social conditions; one of the most famous examples of an animal characterized by mimicry (change of protective color and shape) is a chameleon. In a figurative sense, chameleons are called adaptive journalists. Observations show that mimicry in politics is to some extent a kind of game that, like every game, is always conditional and artificial.
