Abstract:
A long calibration procedure limits the use in practice for a motor imagery (MI)-based brain-computer interface (BCI) system. To tackle this problem, we consider supervised and semisupervised transfer learning. However, it is a challenge for them to cope with high intersession/subject variability in the MI electroencephalographic (EEG) signals. Based on the framework of unsupervised manifold embedded knowledge transfer (MEKT), we propose a supervised MEKT algorithm (sMEKT) and a semisupervised MEKT algorithm (ssMEKT), respectively. sMEKT only has limited labelled samples from a target subject

The subject of psychology broaches two domains of discourse, one in which the subject belongs to psychology as its object of study and another where the discipline of psychology belongs to the subject as a topic of discussion. Actually, these are not two domains of discourse but rather two domains concerning discourse: a domain where the subject belongs to discourse and a domain where discourse belongs to the subject; more precisely: a domain of being known and a domain of the knowing being. This article is about the delimitation of these two domains. Bringing them into existence requires comp

Transfer learning (TL) has been proven to be one of the most significant techniques for cross-subject classification in electroencephalogram (EEG)-based brain-computer interfaces (BCI). Hence, it is widely used to address the challenges of cross-session and cross-subject variability with more accurate intention prediction. In this case, TL utilizes knowledge (signal features) in the source domain(s) to improve the classification in the target domain. However, current existing transfer learning approaches on EEG-based BCI are mostly limited to two-class cross-subject classification problems, wh

Abstract:
Background and objectives. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) National Healthcare Quality and Disparities Report (NHQDR) summarizes the status of healthcare delivery in the United States. The objective of this Technical Brief is to provide considerations for updating the framework guiding the NHQDR. Review methods. The Technical Brief combined input from Key Informants, formal literature review searches, grey literature sources, and discussions with the AHRQ NHQDR program team. Literature searches were executed in October 2024. Findings. We identified quality of care framewo

Abstract:
Demography studies the characteristics of populations. One such characteristic is well-being: this was the subject of the 2019 Wittgenstein Conference. Here, I discuss how objective well-being domains can be summarised to produce an overall well-being score, and how taking self-reported (subjective) well-being into account may help in this effort. But given that there is more than one type of subjective well-being score, we would want to know which one is “best”. We would also need to decide whose well-being counts, or counts more than that of others. Finally, I briefly mention the potential r

Abstract:
Potyviruses form one of the largest and most economically important groups of plant viruses. Individual potyviruses and their isolates vary in symptom expression, host range, and ability to overcome host resistance genes. Understanding factors influencing these biological characteristics is of agricultural importance for epidemiology and deployment of resistance strategies. Cucurbit crops are subject to severe losses by several potyviruses including the highly aggressive and variable zucchini yellow mosaic virus (ZYMV). In this project we sought to investigate protein domains in ZYMV that infl

Abstract:
Foundation year (FY) provision provides access to Higher Education for those not meeting the requirements for undergraduate study by developing skills and subject-specific knowledge. The provision has experienced significant growth and now plays a crucial role within many institutions, helping them reach their widening access and recruitment targets in a highly competitive market. However, the 2019 Review commissioned by the Government (informally known as the Auguar Review) raised concerns about the 'poor value for money' and the quality of these courses. Current research establishes a counte

Abstract:
This Start-Up Grant (SUG) application aims to develop and redesign of the Singapore Coding Scheme 2 (SCS2) for Science. This project builds towards the Core 3 Panel 3 Research Program (Core 3) that seeks to record, measure and analyse the intellectual quality of knowledge work in Singapore classrooms. Building on the Core 1 and Core 2 research programs, Core 3 focuses on the relationships between instruction, pedagogy, assessment and student learning. The broad key objectives for Core 3 are: (a) to continue to develop the model of the logic of teaching and learning in Singapore classrooms expa

Research activities in both our laboratories were directed toward development of control of the FLP/frt recombination system for plants. As described in the text of the research proposal, the US lab has been engaged in developing regulatory strategies such as tissue-specific promoters and the steroid-inducible activation of the FLP enzyme while the main research activities in Israel have been directed toward the development and testing of a copper-regulated expression of flp recombinase in tobacco (this is an example of a promoter activation by metal ions). Full text
Abstract:
Ustilago maydis is a fungal pathogen of maize. Some strains of U. maydis encode secreted polypeptide toxins capable of killing other susceptible strains of U. maydis. Resistance to the toxins is conferred by recessive nuclear genes. The toxins are encoded by genomic segments of resident double-strande RNA viruses. The best characterized toxin, KP6, is composed of two polypeptides, a and b, which are not covalently linked. It is encoded by P6M2 dsRNA, which has been cloned, sequenced and expressed in a variety of systems. In this study we have shown that the toxin acts on the membranes of sensi

Monitoring the integrity of buried ageing ferromagnetic pipelines is a significant problem for infrastructure operators. Typically inspection relies on pig surveys, lDCVG, CIPS and contact NDT methods that often require pipes to be uncovered and often at great expense.
