The general objective of this study is to evaluate how gender aids in reading comprehension, specifically by observing anaphoric coreference with bilingual university students of Spanish/L2 and Brazilian Portuguese/L1. The methodology consists of written stimuli, sentences divided into segments, as required by the experimental technique of offline reading. In total, 42 stimuli will be used, 16 experimental and 26 distractors followed by a comprehension question about the preference for resumption. Based on data from the multimedia subcorpus of the Russian National Corpus, the paper addresses syntactic, pragmatic and prosodic features of insubordinated adverbial clauses introduced by the adverbial subordinator potomu čto ‘because’. The quantitative analysis showed that more than 30% of reason clauses in spoken discourse appear to be insubordinated. Qualitatively, we observed symptoms of insubordination at various levels. The article analyses compound sentences with the time conjunctions när and då in Ingmar Bergman’s memoirs “Laterna Magica”. The pecu liarities of their use are conditioned by textual functions and depend on the character of the semantic link between the main and subordinate parts of a sentence.
