AbstractQuantifying interconnected performances of the modules in a colonial organism (feeding, sexual reproduction, rejuvenation, dormancy) into an integral picture enables studying functional dynamics and resource allocation at different levels – from module to population. Testing this approach on the common boreal-Arctic bryozoan Cribrilina annulata in the White Sea, we describe its life history, comparing colonies on two algal substrates with contrasting size and lifespan. Maintaining live colonies of the numerous developed strains of zebrafish under investigation can be prohibitively costly. As such, there is a growing need to catalog their reproductive cells and have them available on demand [2]. Thus cryopreservation of model strain gametes has become an important endeavor, where evaluation of freezing and thawing techniques is currently a bottleneck to these procedures.

Abstract:
In 2003–2013 and in 2019, an analysis of the relationship between phenotypic variability and the behavior of overwintered foundresses of 4 Palearctic Polistes wasp species from 12 local settlements was performed. It is shown that the structure and organization of melanin patterns of foundresses and their behavior in spring depend on the biocenotic environment of the colonies in which they were raised the previous summer, as well as on the weather conditions of wintering and nesting period. Many bacteria use motility described as swarming to colonize surfaces and form biofilm. Swarming motility has been shown important to biofilm formation [1], where cells act not as individuals but as coordinated groups to move across surfaces, often within a thin-liquid film [2]. Production of a surfactant during swarm improves bacterial motility by lowering surface tension of the liquid film [2]. The mechanism of cell motion during swarming are currently best described for Escherichia coli and Paenibacillus spp., which spread as monolayers of motile cells [3,4]. For Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P.

The meniscus is a fibrocartilaginous tissue vital to the normal functioning of the knee [1]. The dense collagenous structure is sparsely colonized by meniscal fibrochondrocytes (MFCs) which maintain and remodel the extracellular matrix (ECM) [2,3]. While the meniscus functions well with a lifetime of use, traumatic or degenerative injuries to the avascular, inner region of the meniscus fail to heal. Disruption of the fibrous architecture impairs load transmission and initiates erosion of the adjacent articular surfaces, or osteoarthritis (OA). Damage to the meniscus is typically treated by res

The abundance of bacterioplankton and bacteriobenthos in fish ponds is largely determined by three main factors: water temperature, fish stocking density and fertilizers used. As the water temperature rises, the intensity of the metabolic processes of the microbiota increases, and their number increases significantly. The greatest number of microorganisms is contained in the surface layer of bottom sediments. Intensive consumption of the oxygen by bacterioplankton and bacteriobenthos can lead to fish kills. The use of probiotics in aquaculture is of great interest: their influence on the immun

The habitats within Biscayne National Park consist of rocky coast lines, Biscayne Bay (a shallow water bay), over 40 mangrove islands, and coral reefs. This ecosystem lies near the large metropolitan area of Miami, suburban development, a nuclear power plant, and has several canals that drain from the mainland into Biscayne National Park or close to park boundaries. As a result of the park?s proximity to a large population, it endures heavy usage. The park is a popular destination for anglers and boaters. Abstract:
I conducted bat surveys at Colonial National Historical Park to assess the status of bat communities following potential impacts of white-nose syndrome (WNS) since its arrival in Virginia in 2009. This disease, caused by the fungus Pseudogymnoascus destructans, has severely reduced populations of several bat species in the eastern United States, threatening some with regional extirpation. In the East, most-affected species include the little brown bat (Myotis lucifugus), the federally-endangered northern long-eared bat (Myotis septentrionalis) and Indiana bat (Myotis sodalis) (USFWS 2007, USFW

We used these data to summarize the changes that occurred in the first three years after drainage, and to create vegetation maps from 3-m resolution satellite images coinciding with the visit dat
