Abstract:
Abstract What if giving offerings matters not because of beliefs about appeasing the gods or the powers of nature, but because it gives people a sense of relatedness with the world that inspires them to care for it? Practices dismissed as outmoded superstition may play a critical role in shaping people’s sense of what matters and how we should comport ourselves. Making toasts, giving gifts, and making offerings matter to contemporary Heathens, and these practices contribute to their sense of how they should relate with others, including ecological relations. Abstract:
This chapter analyzes how the new salience of hallucinogenic drugs inspired a media interest in Indian drug rituals. Indian practices that were previously described as backward and superstitious were seemingly rehabilitated in 1950s news coverage to align with contemporary theories about the drugs. Of particular interest was the “discovery” of hallucinogenic mushrooms by an amateur scientist writing for Life magazine in 1957 and the frenzy that that discovery sparked in the media, in part due to the author's coordinated publicity campaign. Aside from creating a market for magic mushrooms, the

‘The fortunes of ritual’ charts the history of ritual, its study, and its reception beginning with the Confucian text Liji. This outlines means to counter humanity's fallen state through devices, guides, and practices called li, which are imagined as knots binding society together. Jumping to Enlightenment Europe, ritual came to be viewed as staid and outmoded, a superstitious remnant of a primitive past, a past that prevented humanity from truly advancing. In the early twentieth century, ritual was given some credibility via the Durkhemian tradition of social functionalism and Julian Huxley's

Civilizations of the Supernatural: Witchcraft, Ritual, and Religious Experience in Late Antique, Medieval, and Renaissance Traditions brings together thirteen scholars of late-antique, medieval, and renaissance traditions who discuss magic, religious experience, ritual, and witch-beliefs with the aim of reflecting on the relationship between man and the supernatural. Abstract:
International criminal law is at times taken to manifest fundamental consensual boundaries against violence and destruction of the human species. The faith in law is celebrated in a cult with rituals, symbols, and mythologies where law is saving humans from evil. This chapter takes issue with the transcendental reference in ‘humanity’ by situating it within discussions on religion, the non-deist religions in particular. Three French thinkers: Henri Saint-Simon, Auguste Comte, and Emile Durkheim are stimulating intellectual figures—often neglected or caricatured. They developed new visions for

This book depicts the embodied voices of Native Philippine ritual specialists popularly known as babaylan. These ritual specialists are widely believed to have perished during colonial times, or to survive on the margins in the present-day. They are either persecuted as witches and purveyors of superstition or valorized as symbols of gender equality and anticolonial resistance. Drawing on fieldwork in the Philippines and in the Philippine diaspora, the book's deep engagement with the song and speech of a number of living ritual specialists demonstrates Native historical agency in the 500th yea

Satanism has been an open religion for forty years now and operates successfully in its self-created countercultural niche. In their English- and Bengali-language journal articles and books, middle-class Bengali Hindu authors at the turn of the twentieth century lifted Kālīghāṭ out of the realm of mythology and superstition and embedded it in the realm of linear history and rationality. They further wrote Kālīghāṭ’s ritual practices into a monolithic, non-violent form of Hinduism using rhetoric that was deeply ensconced in the then-emerging language of Hindu reformers. The work of these men in particular would be deemed incorrect or unimportant to many Hindus of their own time. Yet they set the precedent for later
