Švihov dam, the largest drinking water source in the Czech Republic and Central Europe, has problems with eutrophication. The Švihov dam catchment spreads over 1200 km<sup>2</sup> and supplies over 1.5 million people in the capital of Prague and the Central Bohemian region with drinking water. Due to intensive agricultural activities and a lack of wastewater treatment plants in small settlements, the water quality is deteriorating. As a result, corrective measures need to be taken. Abstract:

The article presents tests on one-year artificially bred Atlantic salmon. For 14 days, fish were exposed to lead nitrate Pb (NO3)2 under concentration corresponding to the highest allowable standard of inland water making 0.005 mg Pb/l. Lead (Pb) in fish tissues (muscle and gills) was determined applying atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS). The obtained results have showed that the maximum-permissible-amount of lead in fish (MPA = 0.2 mg Pb/kg) (Lithuanian Hygiene Standard HN 54:2003) slightly exceeds in salmon gills (0.237 mg/kg), whereas in muscles, it exceeds more than twice (0.4 mg/k

The paper analyses the effects of heavy metals on freshwater fishes. From the point of view of pollution caused by heavy metals, the condition of ecosystems in Lithuania is yet less affected by heavy metals compared to that the world over. Fishes accumulate heavy metals selectively. Fishes mostly accumulate Pb, Cr, Cd. Our experiments showed that MPC (Maximum Permitted Concentration) (0.2 mg/kg) of lead was exceeded 1.6 time in the muscles of perch, and 1.4 time ‐ in the muscles of roach. The essence of the contemporary mathematical modelling methodology is the replacement of a real object in question (a process, phenomenon or system) with its “image” ‐ a mathematical model. The mathematical modelling programme REC (Risk Reduction, Environmental Merit and Cost) is based on the comparison of alternative cleaning technologies (to clean contaminated areas). Abstract:

One of the most promising methods to convert organic waste into alternative energy and still obtain fertiliser is anaerobic digestion of waste in bioreactors. To evaluate the suitability of biodegraded organic waste for soil fertilisation, an experiment aimed at determining the amount of total nitrogen, total phosphorus and heavy metals contained in this waste and testing of its pH was carried out. Abstract:

The article deals with research of the ecological situation in Lake Didžiulis, located nearby the highway Vilnius–Kaunas (Trakai District); the most polluted locations in the lake were identified. Research of heavy metals (HM) and radionuclides in the lake silt is described. To research HM concentrations and the specific activities of radionuclides, the samples were collected from 12 bores in the most typical locations of the lake. The species of Stenothemus Bourgeois, 1907 from Southwest China are reviewed. Three species are transferred to this genus, S. davidi (Pic, 1926) comb. nov. (from Malthacus Kirby, 1837), S. minutissimus (Pic, 1933) comb. nov. (from Micropodabrus Pic, 1920) and S. singularicollis (Pic, 1933) comb. nov. (from Lycocerus Gorham, 1895). Nacerdes (Xanthochroa) carniolica peloponesiaca Švihla, 1991 is recorded in Italy for the first time and the biogeographical origin of this new population is discussed on the base of the current knowledge on Coleoptera with trans-Adriatic distribution. The range of this subspecies is revised and some biological notes on the larval food preferences and ecology are provided.

Material from two foundation pits associated with the first principia in the fortress at Novae (Švištov, Bulgaria), built shortly after the arrival of the Legio Prima Italica in AD 69, comprised waste left by the Legio Octava Augusta, its predecessor on site since AD 45. The finds provide essential information on the supply chain of lighting devices reaching the legionary camp before AD 71, when the pits were filled up.
