Abstract:
Hydrogels have been used as one of the novel soft materials in many biomedical applications such as drug delivery and tissue engineering for recent decades. In the main part of this work, bi-functional poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) precursors with either thiols (PEG-SH) or allyls (PEG-Al) , covering molecular weights from 3 kDa to 8 kDa were synthesized and thoroughly characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, FT-Raman and MALDI-TOF techniques. By combining PEG precursors with complementary trifunctional crosslinkers, a library of well-defined single-network hydrogels was efficiently constructed via the

The buckling of a material subject to stress is a very common phenomenon observed in mechanics. However, the observed buckling of a surface confined hydrogel due to swelling is a unique manifestation of the buckling problem. The reason for buckling is the same in all cases; there is a certain magnitude of force that once exceeded, causes the material to deform itself into a buckling mode. Exactly what that buckling mode is as well as how much force is necessary to cause buckling depends on the material properties. Taking both a finite difference and analytical approach to the problem, it is de

The thesis is focused on physical hyaluronan gels. The object of study is the interaction of hyaluronan (HyA) with oppositely charged surfactants in physiologic solution (0.15 M NaCl), leading to the formation of gel. In the first part of work have been determined the solids´ contents (X) in gels and their supernatants in percentage and their correlation with molecular weight concentration of original HyA solution and the ratio of binding sites on hyaluronan chain and surfactant CTAB. To conclude, decrease in HyA concentration results in higher values of X and vice versa. On the other hand, in

Membranes act as smart structures in respect to their permeation abilities. Control of particle and fluid permeation through a synthetic membrane can be achieved by using different effects like size-exclusion or electromagnetic interactions that occur between the particles and membrane pores. The simulation of controlled permeability provides an insight into the smart behavior of membranes for chemical signal processing, sensing interfaces or lab-on-a-chip devices. In the current work, we model the underlying physical processes on a microfluidic level using the engineer’s approach of laminar f

The present work is synthesizing novel protein-based superabsorbent hydrogels from albumin protein (AP) and isolated zygomycetes protein (IZP) via modification with an acylating reagent and a bifunctional crosslinker, also investigation on their swelling behaviors under some conditions. The hydrophilic acylating reagent was introduced into albumin and zygomycetes proteins and hydrophylicity of albumin and isolated zygomycetes protein were increased by ethylenediaminetetraacetic dianhydride (EDTAD).

Ionic hydrogels belong to the class of polyelectrolyte gels or ionic gels. Their ability to swell or shrink under different environmental conditions such as change of pH, ion concentration or temperature make them promising materials, e.g. for microsensoric or microactuatoric devices. The hydrogel swelling exhibits nonlinear effects due to the occurrence of different interacting transport phenomena. Numerical simulations are an essential part in the ongoing development of microsensors and microactuators. In order to determine transport effects due to diffusion, migration and convection a multi
