Calculations of optical devices in the geometrized Maxwell’s theory use well-known formalisms of general theory of relativity and differential geometry. In particular, for such calculations it is required to know the analytical form of the geodesic equations, which leads to the need to calculate a large number of monotonous mathematical expressions. One of the purposes of computer algebra is to facilitate the researcher’s work by automating cumbersome symbolic computations. Thus, the use of computer algebra systems seems to be quite an obvious way. Several free implementations of symbolic comp

The article focuses on use of cognitive activity in preschool children. Particular attention is paid to understanding of the symbolic mediation in the context of the study of play activities. We describe an experiment which purpose was to develop the representations of the rainbow phenomenon in children of preschool age. The formation occurred in two ways: through the use of symbolic means (using models), and through the use of symbols in the play activity. The subjects were preschoolers aged 4-5 years (N = 23) attending preschools in Moscow. The results show that the use of iconic and symboli

Model checking is an automatic formal verification technique for establishing correctness of systems. It has been widely used in industry for analysing and verifying complex safety-critical systems in application domains such as avionics, medicine and computer security, where manual testing is infeasible and even minor errors could have dire consequences. In our increasingly parallelised world, concurrency has become pivotal and seamlessly woven within programming paradigms, however, extremely challenging when it comes to modelling and establishing correctness of intended behaviour. Quantum transport happens in open systems consisting of a scattering region coupled to external electrodes. When there are strong electron-electron interactions in the scattering region, analytical derivations of the Green's functions can be very tedious and error prone. In contrast to this, we argue for the necessity of a formal representation of expert knowledge -- either to develop explicit scientific theories or to compensate for the lack of data. Symbolic communication is an interdisciplinary field that investigates the meaning and function of symbols in the communication process. Within the framework of symbolic communication studies, symbols are seen as tools individuals employ to convey meanings and values. As a crucial cultural artifact and visual medium, film combines various symbolic elements—including imagery, sound, and plot—to create a distinctive and intricate symbolic system, thus conveying specific meanings through symbol construction.
