The purpose of the study was to establish patterns of variation of the branches of the right and left sympathetic trunks in the thoracic aorta azygos and hemiazygos veins during the fetal period of human ontogenesis. Materials and methods. An anatomical study was performed on 47 human fetuses using macromicroscopic preparation of neurovascular branches under the control of binocular magnifier, vascular injection, application contrasting of prepared vessels and nerves, making 3D reconstruction models of the posterior mediastinum structures and morphometry. The review is devoted to the mechanism of duodenal motility activation caused by sympathetic nerves. The authors have found that stimulation of the sympathetic trunk in the thoracic cavity in dogs in most cases provide not inhibitory but excitatory motor responses of the duodenum. Excitatory effects were eliminated during 5HT-receptors blockade by promedol and lysergol. Analysis of publications showed that sympathetic trunk contains serotoninergic fibers, providing excitatory motor responses of the duodenum to electrical nerve stimulation. The development of fetal surgery determines the relevance of studying fetal anatomy, particularly the topography of the nodes of the sympathetic trunk of the neck. Details of the location of the nodes and their connections with the surrounding nerves and vessels are critically important for the successful conduct of operations, reducing the risks of complications and increasing the effectiveness of surgical interventions. Objective. To determine the macroscopic structure and topography of the cervical part of the sympathetic trunk, in particular its ganglions, connecting branches, and their co

Abstract During routine dissection for didactic purposes, we found unusual branching pattern of cervical sympathetic trunk. In our case cervical sympathetic trunk had not only superior, middle, and inferior ganglia, but also presented two more ganglia in its main course. One of accessory ganglia was identified to be vertebral ganglion and presented with vertebral loop. All three cardiac cervical nerves emerged from another, extravertebral ganglion, which was supplied from sympathetic trunk. We are convinced that variability of cervical sympathetic trunk is clinically significant in surgery of

We report the case of a 17-year-old man who presented with left-sided Horner's syndrome. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a spindle-shaped cervical tumor in the left paravertebral space. During operation, a tumor originating from the left sympathetic trunk was found. The histopathologic analysis showed a sympathetic paraganglioma. The sympathetic trunk is an extremely rare location for a cervical paraganglioma; only a few cases have been reported in the literature.

In those patients with significant sympathetically maintained pain, repeated blocks may provide a therapeutic value and help facilitate physical therapy and rehabilitation. Cervical sympathetic blocks have been traditionally performed by using surface landmarks, however imaging-guided blocks are strongly recommended to avoid potential serious complications. Most preganglionic sympathetic efferents innervating the head, neck, and upper extremity either pass through or synapse at the stellate ganglion. This provides an ideal target for blockade of sympathetic innervation to the head, neck, and u

Abstract The trunk or torso is an anatomical term for the central part of the human body. It includes the thorax, abdomen, pelvis, and perineum. It does not include the head and neck or the upper and lower limbs. The vertebral column forms the mainstay of the trunk. This chapter describes the vertebral column, the normal curvatures in the adult vertebral column, and commonly seen malformations. It describes in detail the general features of the vertebra. As a large part of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) lies in the trunk, this chapter includes an overview of the ANS. Basic features of the

Pathophysiology is the dysfunction in the control of the sympathetic autonomic nervous system through a multifactorial mechanism with a strong association with hormones, immunological, biochemical and other predisposing factors, including drug addiction, with emphasis on ma
