This research examines the impact of certain bank-specific variables on bank stability in Ghana, in the context of the existing regulatory structures. The 1990s saw significant increases in commercial bank membership in the Federal Home Loan Bank (FHLB) System and extensive growths in FHLB assets and outstanding advances. Since FHLB policies may enable risk-taking behavior by the System's member institutions, this research evaluates the impact of the FHLBs on community bank members, local consumers, and local markets. This paper compares economical and political independence to a success rate of monetary policy of national banks, on a case of Fed and the Czech National Bank. Based on my definition of independence and accountability based on literature, I show that price stability defined as a main goal is the key factor. If the goal consists of more indicators, there is space for political pressure and the success rate decreases. This study empirically investigates the validity of the competition and stability trade-off hypothesis for the Turkish banking system. To this end, we consider annual bank level accounting data for the 1990-2008 period and compute the most commonly used measures of banking stability and competition.
