AbstractWhen developing complex software and systems, contracts provide a means for controlling the complexity by dividing the responsibilities among the components of the system in a hierarchical fashion. In specific application areas, dedicated contract theories formalise the notion of contract and the operations on contracts in a manner that supports best the development of systems in that area. At the other end, contract meta-theories attempt to provide a systematic view on the various contract theories by axiomatising their desired properties. However, there exists a noticeable gap between the most well-known contract meta-theory of Benveniste et al. [5], which focuses on the design of embedded and cyber-physical systems, and the established way of using contracts when developing general software, following Meyer’s design-by-contract methodology [18]. At the core of this gap appears to be the notion of procedure: while it is a central unit of composition in software development, the meta-theory does not suggest an obvious way of treating procedures as components.In this paper, we provide a first step towards a contract theory that takes procedures as the basic building block, and is at the same time an instantiation of the meta-theory. To this end, we propose an abstract contract theory for sequential programming languages with procedures, based on denotational semantics. We show that, on the one hand, the specification of contracts of procedures in Hoare logic, and their procedure-modular verification, can be cast naturally in the framework of our abstract contract theory. On the other hand, we also show our contract theory to fulfil the axioms of the meta-theory. In this way, we give further evidence for the utility of the meta-theory, and prepare the ground for combining our instantiation with other, already existing instantiations.

AbstractStudent perceptions of teaching are promising for measuring the quality of teaching in primary and secondary education. However, generating valid and reliable measurements when using a student perception questionnaire (SPQ) is not self-evident. Many authors have pointed to issues that need to be taken into account when developing, selecting, and using an SPQ in order to generate valid and reliable scores. In this study, 22 SPQs that met the inclusion criteria used in the literature search were systematically evaluated by two reviewers. The reviewers were most positive about the theoretical basis of the SPQs and about the quality of the SPQ materials. According to their evaluation, most SPQs also had acceptable reliability and construct validity. However, norm information about the quality rating measures was often lacking and few sampling specifications were provided. Information about the features of the SPQs, if available, was also often not presented in an accessible way by the instrument developers (e.g., in a user manual), making it difficult for potential SPQ users to obtain an overview of the qualities of available SPQs in order to decide which SPQs best fit their own context and intended use. It is suggested to create an international database of SPQs and to develop a standardized evaluation framework to evaluate the SPQ qualities in order to provide potential users with the information they need to make a well-informed choice of an SPQ.

AbstractSchools are continuously confronted with various forms of change, including changes in students’ demographics, large-scale educational reforms, and accountability policies aimed at improving the quality of education. On the part of the schools, this requires sustained adaptation to, and co-development with, such changes to maintain or improve educational quality. As schools are multilevel, complex, and dynamic organizations, many conditions, factors, actors, and practices, as well as the (loosely coupled) interplay between them, can be involved therein (e.g. professional learning communities, accountability systems, leadership, instruction, stakeholders, etc.). School improvement can thus be understood through theories that are based on knowledge of systematic mechanisms that lead to effective schooling in combination with knowledge of context and path dependencies in individual school improvement journeys. Moreover, because theory-building, measuring, and analysing co-develop, fully understanding the school improvement process requires basic knowledge of the latest methodological and analytical developments and corresponding conceptualizations, as well as a continuous discourse on the link between theory and methodology. The complexity places high demands on the designs and methodologies from those who are tasked with empirically assessing and fostering improvements (e.g. educational researchers, quality care departments, and educational inspectorates).

Abstract Invasive plants often occur at high densities and tend to be highly generalist in their interactions with herbivores, pathogens, mycorrhiza, endophytes and pollinators. These characteristics mean that invasive plants should frequently participate in diverse indirect biotic interactions with the surrounding community, mediated by their direct interaction partners (e.g. antagonists and mutualists). Indirect interactions play an important role in many ecological processes, yet we still lack a systematic understanding of the circumstances under which they influence the success and impacts of invasive species. In this chapter, I first describe several of the indirect interaction pathways that are commonly encountered in invasion biology and review their contribution to the impacts of plant invasions on co-occurring species. The literature review revealed that there are now many case studies describing various indirect impacts of invasive plants. However, identical interaction motifs (e.g. plant-enemy-plant, plant-mutualist-plant) can bring about several possible outcomes, depending upon each species' provenance, relative abundances and interaction strengths, abiotic resource availability, spatial and temporal scale and the influence of other species. Moreover, knowledge gaps identified include a lack of studies of indirect facilitation outside of plant-pollinator systems, limited consideration of indirect invader impacts on other non-native species, and the scarcity of generalizable results to date. Second, I integrate the literature with some trending research areas in invasion biology (interaction networks, biogeography, invasion dynamics) and identify some potential future research directions. Finally, I discuss how knowledge about indirect biotic interactions could be incorporated into the management of invasive plants.

In many contexts it is difficult or impossible to select a simple random sample. For example, the number of units in the finite population, N, may not be known in advance, or it may not be feasible to assign labels to all units in the population and to select an SRS from these labels (e.g., crabs within boxes on a fishing vessel). Instead, one may select a random start, r, on the integers 1 through k and then select that unit and every kth unit thereafter for inclusion in the sample. This selection method, called linear systematic sampling, results in an extremely restricted randomization—there are only k possible linear systematic samples—compared to the typically large number [N!/(N-n)!n!] of possible samples of size n that can be selected from N by SRS. But if there is a trend of increase or decrease in unit-specific y value with unit label or location, then sampling variance of a mean-per-unit estimator for a linear systematic design may be substantially less than for an SRS design. Circular and fractional interval systematic sampling designs are also presented. The disadvantage of these systematic sampling designs is that the highly restricted randomizations generally rule out unbiased estimation of sampling variance from a single systematic sample. This chapter reviews the principles and rules governing biological nomenclature. Biological nomenclature serves as the language by which systematists name organisms and groups of organisms and communicate their knowledge about them. Indeed, a taxon's name is the critical semiotic link between specimens, taxonomic concepts, literature, and all other information pertaining to that taxon. To preserve its clarity and stability of meaning, biological nomenclature is governed by rather elaborate and detailed rules, rooted in the system of binominal nomenclature, which have been evolving since they were first proposed in the mid-nineteenth century. Nomenclature is not an end unto itself but rather a necessary adjunct for the organization and conveyance of information on biological diversity. The chapter then explores two areas that represent the most practical results of descriptive taxonomy and phylogenetic analysis: formal classifications and systematic databases.

Ernst Mayr, a systematist and founding father of the synthetic theory, has recently (Mayr 1980b) assessed the role played by the field of systematics in general in the emergence of the synthesis. Mayr (1980a, 1980b; 1982, chapter 12) actively opposes the conventional supposition that the synthesis is the product of three phases of development: (1) resolution of early difficulties raised in the early days of genetics, largely through the work of Fisher, Haldane, and Wright; (2) the publication of Dobzhansky’s Genetics and the Origin of Species (1937a), which fused concepts of the genetics of populations with the mainstream of Darwinian thought; and (3) the demonstration by systematists (e.g., Mayr 1942), paleontologists (e.g., Simpson 1944), and practitioners of various other biological disciplines that the data of their respective fields are consistent with genetic principles. (See, for example, Shapere 1980, p. 398, for such a view of the historical development of the synthesis.) It is Mayr’s view (e.g., 1980a, 1980b) that these various nongenetics disciplines played a more vital, vigorous and active role than such “me-too-ism” implied by phase 3 above in the conventional view. There is, no doubt, something to be said for this claim, though the historical question per se is not germane to the present inquiry. But Mayr’s (1980b, pp. 127 ff) list of the contributions he feels systematists made directly to the new synthesis is relevant as it suggests a guide to our understanding of Mayr’s own important contribution—Systematics and the Origin of Species (1942, reprinted in 1982). Mayr lists the following contributions of systematics to the emerging synthesis: (1) “population thinking,” (2) “the immense variability of populations,” (3) “the gradualness of evolution,” (4) “the genetic nature of gradual evolution,” (5) “geographic speciation,” (6) “the adaptive nature of observed variation,” (7) “belief in the importance of natural selection,” and (8) the notion (shared with paleontologists) that “macroevolutionary phenomena” are interpretable in terms of “gradual evolution” (i.e., as opposed to saltational models—Mayr 1980b, p. 134). All these topics, and more, are well developed in the pages of Mayr’s Systematics and the Origin of Species.

Patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD) suffer from a substantial burden of physical and emotional symptoms that adversely affect their health-related quality of life. Their number of symptoms when systematically evaluated is comparable to cancer patients. Overall symptom burden and severity are correlated directly with impaired quality of life and depression. Among the most frequent are fatigue, pain, pruritus, sleep disturbances and poor appetite. This chapter highlights one of the most common and troublesome of these symptoms affecting advanced CKD patients, particularly those with end-stage kidney disease: uremic pruritus. The epidemiology, pathophysiology, and current evidence-based treatments are discussed as a way to provide a practical guide for diagnosis and treatment. Lastly, areas for future research to improve symptom management in this growing, chronically ill population are identified.
