ABSTRACT A novel thermostable chimeric β-galactosidase was constructed by fusing a poly-His tag to the N-terminal region of the β-galactosidase from Thermus sp. strain T2 to facilitate its overexpression in Escherichia coli and its purification by immobilized metal-ion affinity chromatography (IMAC). The poly-His tag fusion did not affect the activation, kinetic parameters, and stability of the β-galactosidase. Copper-iminodiacetic acid (Cu-IDA) supports enabled the most rapid adsorption of the His-tagged enzyme, favoring multisubunit interactions, but caused deleterious effects on the enzyme

Abstract:
Text clouds or tag clouds are increasingly common on the Internet nowadays. They normally indicate the words and ideas most used in a specific situation. The power of this design tool to help users make decisions seems as yet little researched. Emphasis on the main words through the use of font-size differences can change the way people read and search for information on the web. This simple visual way of showing ideas is discussed in this paper. The paper describes case studies and presents findings of empirical tests conducted on the effectiveness of text clouds.

Abstract:
Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology enables wireless communication between a RFID reader and a RFID tag. One type, passive RFID tags, need no battery, being powered from the RFID reader's radio frequency signal. Passive RFID tags can support memories that can be used to store portions of the patient's medical history. One form factor for passive RFID tags is an employee ID (used for wireless access) or credit card form factor. This form factor allows the patient to carry their medical information with them. RFID benefits include providing information to Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs), maintaining a patient's vaccination history and providing emergency contact information, all in a clear and unmistakable format. This simplifies information exchange during patient transfers, a cause of many preventable medical mistakes and errors. Cheap and simple systems, such as the one presented in this chapter, can reduce stress and prevent possible errors. Such systems with an intuitive human-machine interface can reduce the duration of a patient visit throughput. This system can prevent simple errors such as the administration of the wrong drug, dose, or drug omission, which is a major issue in hospitals. This requires that information be stored in a standardised manner, with limited healthcare provider access and use to protect patient privacy. This chapter explores the use of passive RFID tags to store medical information about a patient, with specific focus on storage of a child's vaccination history and safety.

Abstract:
In recent years we have witnessed a proliferation of RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) middleware systems and projects (including several open source projects), which are extensively used to support the emerging wave of RFID applications. Some of the RFID middleware projects come with simple tools, which facilitate the application development, configuration, and deployment processes. However, these tools tend to be fragmented since they address only part of an RFID system (such as the filtering of tag streams and/or the generation of business events). In this chapter, the authors introduce an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for RFID applications, which addresses multiple parts of an RFID application, while at the same time supporting the full application development lifecycle (i.e. design, development, deployment, and testing of RFID applications). The introduced IDE comprises a wide range of tools, which have been implemented as modular plug-ins to an Eclipse-based environment. The various tools enable application development, deployment, testing, and configurations over the middleware infrastructure established by the AspireRFID (AspireRFID Consortium, 2013), and their evaluation has proven that they can significantly ease RFID application development.
